The general principles of treatment of injuries of the flexor and extensor tendons in the hand and distal forearm are mentioned. For the extensor tendons the different types of treatment performed for injuries in the different areas, the finger, the back of the hand, and the wrist, are briefly discussed. Knowledge recently acquired from experimental and clinical studies, especially that of the anatomy, the blood supply, the nutrient pathways, and the healing of the flexor tendons, is discussed, and its applications in our daily clinical work are shown.

BACKGROUND: Elbow and forearm injuries are common in high school baseball and softball players. Given the trends in overuse and early sport specialization, it may be prudent to provide an updated review of the epidemiological data to aid injury prevention efforts.
METHODS: Data regarding elbow and forearm injuries in high school baseball and softball players from the 2005-2006 through 2018-2019 seasons was extracted from the National High School Sports-Related Injury Surveillance Study.
RESULTS: There were 518 total elbow and forearm injuries reported for 5,738,470 athletic exposures (AEs) y

OBJECTIVE: Floating elbow, which refers to a humerus fracture in the supracondylar region and a forearm fracture, is a very unusual injury. The purpose of this study is to compare the clinical results of patients with "floating elbows" who underwent surgical therapy and who were given forearm immobilization with a splint as follow-up care.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifteen patients who had been diagnosed with floating elbow owing to trauma were scanned retrospectively and followed up for at least a year. Eight individuals who suffered from broken forearms underwent surgical repair. After initial

We retrospectively reviewed the charts of patients treated for bite injuries in our clinic from 2014 to 2019. The time from the bite event to surgery, duration of hospital stay, duration of antibiotic treatment, complications, incapacity for work and costs were analysed. Cat bites were compared with the other bite injuries and were found to be more problematic. The results of early (within 24 hours) and delayed treatment in cat bite injuries were compared. Treated early they were associated with a shorter hospital stay (1.4 versus 2.4 days), shorter duration of antibiotic treatment (9.7 versus

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the diagnostic value of Doppler ultrasound (DU) in predicting arterial injuries following the penetrating trauma of the forearm, by comparing preoperative diagnosis made by DU and that made by physical examination (PE) with the intraoperative diagnosis.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, 48 patients (44 men, 3 women; mean age = 30 ± 12.5 years) who underwent surgical treatment due to a suspected arterial injury following a penetrating trauma in the forearm from 2016 to 2018 were included. The DU examination was frequently done before an ort

Lacerations of arteries and nerves not only result in motor and sensory deficiencies. Trophic changes occur as well, more frequently after nerve injuries than after vascular injuries. The major progress in their treatment consists in primary repair of the injured structures in order to keep their loss of function as brief and as minimal as possible. Although the results after nerve laceration are still far from being ideal, there are strong indications that an improvement can be obtained with this treatment strategy. Alternatives to primary repair are discussed.

Wide-Awake Local Anaesthesia No Tourniquet (WALANT) is an effective and increasingly utilised method of anaesthesia for the surgical treatment of injuries to the hand, wrist, and forearm. Despite its proven safety, efficacy, and cost-effectiveness, the adoption of WALANT has been limited, particularly in Western healthcare systems where general and regional anaesthesia predominate, especially in complex injuries. We report the application of WALANT in a variety of hand surgical procedures for the treatment of complex injuries ranging from complex fractures to multiple soft tissue injuries in a

BACKGROUND: Elbow ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries have become increasingly common in throwing athletes. The forearm flexors (FF) have been studied as biomechanical stabilizers for the medial elbow. However, there are no studies investigating the association of concomitant UCL injuries and FF injuries in throwing athletes.
OBJECTIVE: To determine if throwing athletes with a complete UCL injury had a greater likelihood of concomitant FF injury than those with a partial UCL injury.
DESIGN: Descriptive retrospective epidemiological study.
SETTING: Academic, tertiary care medical center

A 22 year old woman presented to the accident and emergency department with a self inflicted stab wound to the radial side of the volar aspect of the left forearm caused by a pen knife. Her wounds were sutured on the day of injury. Over the course of next three weeks her wounds healed well but she noticed difficulty in using the hand. She therefore attended her general practitioner who suspected a possible nerve injury and referred the patient back to the A&E department. On follow up examination, she was noticed to have a loss of finger and thumb extension and weakness of thumb abduction. Acti

Background Essex-Lopresti injuries are complex, frequently missed forearm/elbow injuries consisting of a fracture of the radial head with disruption of both the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) and the interosseous membrane (IOM). Ideal management of these injuries remains controversial, especially in relation to the IOM, due in part to underdiagnosis of IOM injury and incomplete understanding of the IOM role. Methods A 43-year-old man sustained an open radial shaft fracture with associated radial head subluxation, coronoid base fracture, and DRUJ injury with ulnar head subluxation. He was tak

BACKGROUND: Due to the paucity of 'Criss-Cross' injury, the pathological changes and injury patterns have not been clearly described; as well as the treatment and prognosis. This retrospective study aimed to investigate the treatment and clinical outcomes of 'Criss-Cross' injury of the forearm.
METHODS: All patients diagnosed with Criss-Cross injury meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria in our Level 3 hospital (most advanced level) from 2010 to 2022, were enrolled in the study. A total of 12 patients were enrolled in our retrospective analysis. Closed reduction was successful in 3 pati

INTRODUCTION: Reconstructive options for surgical malignant of periacetabular tumors include endoprosthetic reconstructions, biologic reconstruction, hip transposition, hip rotationplasty, and iliofemoral arthrodesis. In this case series, we discuss the outcome of iliofemoral arthrodesis as a reconstruction option in the management of malignant periacetabular tumors.

INTRODUCTION: Limbus vertebral fracture is an uncommon injury described in adolescents. It refers to the separation of a bony fragment from the unfused ring apophysis of lumbar vertebral end plate. It usually presents with back pain with/without radiculopathy masquerading an acute disc prolapse. However, the presentation as acute cauda equina syndrome has seldom been reported.
CASE REPORT: A 15-year-old male presented to the casualty with a history of acute-onset low back pain and bilateral lower limb radicular pain with weakness, after lifting of a heavy Indian musical instrument (Dholak). T

Ulnar nerve injury in closed fracture of forearm in children is uncommon.Commonly, neurapraxia is the reason for this palsy but other severe injuries or nerve entrapment has been reported in some cases. The importance of diagnosis concerning the types of the nerve injury lies in the fact that they have totally different management. We present a case of ulnar nerve deficit in a child following a closed fracture of the forearm bones. It is imperative to diagnose exact cause of palsy as it forms the basis for treatment. MRI scan can help diagnosis and accordingly guide the management. Simple nerve

Acute compartment syndrome is a limb-threatening condition in which early diagnosis and surgical consultation for fasciotomy are required to preserve functional outcome. The diagnosis is typically considered in patients with traumatic mechanisms of injury such as a direct blow and crush to the compartment, particularly when there is a fracture in the same compartment. We report the case of a patient with acute compartment syndrome of the dorsal forearm that occurred as a result of an atypical noncontact traumatic mechanism. Establishing the diagnosis of compartment syndrome was complicated in

The lateral antebrachial cutaneous nerve (LACN) is the sensory branch of the musculocutaneous nerve and usually innervates the lateral aspect of the forearm. Isolated lesions are rare, of varied etiology and generally underdiagnosed. We present a retrospective descriptive study of electromyography performed at the General University Hospital of Castellón in the last 20 years with isolated NCAL lesion. We identified 11 cases (8 men and 3 women), average age 44 years (15-73 years). 73% were referred from traumatology. Only one patient was correctly guided in the application. 63.6% of cases noted

BACKGROUND: "Floating forearm" injuries, perilunate injuries, with an elbow dislocation, are rare and challenging to treat.
METHODS: We present the case of an unusual variant of a floating forearm injury, trans-scaphoid perilunate fracture dislocation and elbow dislocation, with a concomitant open both-bone forearm fracture after a fall from a ladder. Treatment involved irrigation and debridement of the forearm wound, open reduction and internal fixation of the forearm and perilunate injury, and closed reduction of the elbow.
RESULTS: At final follow-up, he had returned to his previous occup
