Optimizing Disease Outbreak Forecast Ensembles.

On the basis of historical influenza and COVID-19 forecasts, we found that more than 3 forecast models are needed to ensure robust ensemble accuracy. Additional models can improve ensemble performance, but with diminishing accuracy returns. This understanding will assist with the design of current and future collaborative infectious disease forecasting efforts.

Tipping point forecasting in nonstationary dynamics on function spaces.

Tipping points are abrupt, drastic, and often irreversible changes in the evolution of nonstationary and chaotic dynamical systems. For instance, increased greenhouse gas concentrations are predicted to lead to drastic decreases in low cloud cover, referred to as a climatological tipping point. In this paper, we learn the evolution of such nonstationary dynamical systems using a recurrent neural operator (RNO), which learns mappings between function spaces. After training RNO on only the pre-tipping dynamics, we employ it to detect future tipping points using an uncertainty-based approach. In

Forecasting extreme temperature events by Hankel-augmented contrastive learning.

Accurate forecasting of extreme temperature events is critically important for climate adaptation and disaster preparedness, yet it remains a fundamental challenge due to the abrupt and non-stationary nature of such phenomena. Current time-series models often fail to capture rapid transitions and anomalous patterns that deviate significantly from historical behaviors. Here, we propose Hankelformer, a novel deep learning architecture that integrates structured Hankel-based augmentation with contrastive learning to significantly improve the forecasting of extreme weather events. The model employ

Retrieval-augmented patch generation for geosynchronous satellite status forecasting.

Accurate geosynchronous satellites status forecasting is essential for improving space situational awareness and supporting downstream tasks such as maneuver detection and intent inference. However, current models face difficulty modeling high-orbit observation data due to its strong non-stationary and weak periodic structure, which hinders effective long-range dependency learning and adaptation to evolving orbital dynamics. To address these challenges, we propose RAPG, a Retrieval-Augmented Patch Generation framework for geosynchronous satellite status analysis, including status forecasting a

Leveraging synthetic and genetic data to improve epidemic forecasting.

Forecasting infectious disease outbreaks is hard. Forecasting emerging infectious diseases with limited historical data is even harder. In this paper, we investigate ways to improve emerging infectious disease forecasting when little pathogen-specific training data are available. Specifically, we explore two sources of information that may be available near the start of an emerging disease outbreak: synthetic data and genetic information. For this investigation, we conducted an experiment where we trained deep learning models on different combinations of real and synthetic data, both with and

Forecasting Future Anatomies: Longitudinal Brain Mri-to-Mri Prediction.

Predicting future brain state from a baseline magnetic resonance image (MRI) is a central challenge in neuroimaging and has important implications for studying neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD). Most existing approaches predict future cognitive scores or clinical outcomes, such as conversion from mild cognitive impairment to dementia. Instead, here we investigate longitudinal MRI image-to-image prediction that forecasts a participant's entire brain MRI several years into the future, intrinsically modeling complex, spatially distributed neurodegenerative patterns. We i

Forecasting malaria cases using climate variability in Sierra Leone.

BACKGROUND: Malaria continues to pose a public health challenge in Sierra Leone, where timely and accurate forecasting can guide more effective interventions. Although seasonal models such as Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA) have traditionally been employed for disease forecasting, Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) have gained attention for capturing complex temporal patterns that linear models may not fully capture. METHODS: This study compares the forecasting performance of SARIMA and ANN models in forecasting malaria cases using malaria case data from 2018 to 2023

Typhoon disaster emergency forecasting method based on big data.

Typhoons are natural disasters characterized by their high frequency of occurrence and significant impact, often leading to secondary disasters. In this study, we propose a prediction model for the trend of typhoon disasters. Utilizing neural networks, we calculate the forgetting gate, update gate, and output gate to forecast typhoon intensity, position, and disaster trends. By employing the concept of big data, we collected typhoon data using Python technology and verified the model's performance. Overall, the model exhibited a good fit, particularly for strong tropical storms. However, impro

Trend analysis and forecasting of energy humanization in Ghana.

Energy is a key source of economic growth because many production and consumption activities involve energy as a basic input hence central to the operation of any modern economy. The study constructs an energy humanization index and forecasts the various dimensions of energy humanization in Ghana by 2030 using the minimum-maximum normalization approach and assigning equal weight to each of the different indicators and dimensions. The forecast ascertains the achievability of SDG 7. Exponential smoothing was also adopted for forecasting future values. The study employed a dataset spanning from 1

Forecasting the elimination of active trachoma: An empirical model.

BACKGROUND: Great progress has been made toward the elimination of trachoma as a public-health problem. Mathematical and statistical models have been used to forecast when the program will attain the goal of the elimination of active trachoma, defined as prevalence of trachomatous inflammation-follicular in 1-9 year olds (TF1-9) <5%. Here we use program data to create an empirical model predicting the year of attaining global elimination of TF1-9. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We calculated the mean number of years (95% CI) observed for an implementation unit (IU) to move from a baseline TF

Forecasting efforts from prior epidemics and COVID-19 predictions.

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, countless disease prediction models have emerged, shaping the focus of news media, policymakers, and broader society. We reviewed the accuracy of forecasts made during prior twenty-first century epidemics, namely SARS, H1N1, and Ebola. We found that while disease prediction models were relatively nascent as a research focus during SARS and H1N1, for Ebola, numerous such forecasts were published. We found that forecasts of deaths for Ebola were often far from the eventual reality, with a strong tendency to over predict. Given the societal prominence of

An ensemble model for forecasting infectious diseases in India.

Time series modelling and forecasting plays an important role in various domains. The objective of this paper is to construct a simple average ensemble method to forecast the number of cases for infectious diseases like dengue and typhoid and compare it by applying models for forecasting. In this paper we have also evaluated the correlation between the number of typhoid and dengue cases with the ecological variables. The monthly data of dengue and typhoid cases from 2014 to 2017 were taken from integrated diseases surveillance programme, Government of India. This data was analysed by three mod

Forecasting temporal dynamics of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Northeast Brazil.

INTRODUCTION: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a vector-borne disease of increasing importance in northeastern Brazil. It is known that sandflies, which spread the causative parasites, have weather-dependent population dynamics. Routinely-gathered weather data may be useful for anticipating disease risk and planning interventions. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We fit time series models using meteorological covariates to predict CL cases in a rural region of Bahía, Brazil from 1994 to 2004. We used the models to forecast CL cases for the period 2005 to 2008. Models accounting for meteorologic

Regional Probabilistic Fertility Forecasting by Modeling Between-Country Correlations.

BACKGROUND: The United Nations (UN) Population Division produces probabilistic projections for the total fertility rate (TFR) using the Bayesian hierarchical model of Alkema et al. (2011), which produces predictive distributions of the TFR for individual countries. The UN is interested in publishing probabilistic projections for aggregates of countries, such as regions and trading blocs. This requires joint probabilistic projections of future country-specific TFRs, taking account of the correlations between them. OBJECTIVE: We propose an extension of the Bayesian hierarchical model that allow
