Computational ballistic analysis of the cranial shot to John F. Kennedy.

Almost 60 years after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, the majority of Americans are still reluctant to believe official reports presented by the commissions gathered in 1964 and again in 1976 that determined the direction of the shot resulting in the fatal head injury. Long-withheld, confidential government files released in 2017 reignited the controversy. The present investigation computationally simulated projectile-skull-impacts from the direction specified in official reports and from three other directions. Detailed geometric models of the human head and ammunition

Preliminary effect of projectile yaw on extremity gunshot wounding in a cadaveric animal model: a serendipitous study.

Gunshot wounding (GSW) is capable of causing devastating tissue injuries by delivering kinetic energy (KE) through the contact surface area of a projectile. The contact surface area can be increased by yaw, deformation and fragmentation, all of which may be caused by any intermediate layers struck by the projectile prior to entering its target. This study aims to describe whether projectile yaw occurring before penetration of a cadaveric animal limb model causes greater damage with or without clothing layers present using 5.45 × 39 mm projectiles. In total, 12 fallow deer hind limbs were shot,

Celebratory firing leads to serious injuries - a case report.

Firearms are extensively used in shooting incidents, functions or for recreational purposes around the world. However, illegal modifications to a firearm can pose a major challenge to the forensic community, as their examination and subsequent individualisation are not always easy when compared to standard firearms due to the non-availability of standard comparison material and the damage caused to the firearm during test firing. We present a case report of unusual firing by an improvised firearm adapted to produce a loud noise during a marriage party. This led to high pressure inside the barr

Firing cycle dynamics and forensic interpretation of 3D-printed Ruger 10/22-pattern .22 LR rifle receivers during live fire.

Polymer receivers fabricated by fused filament fabrication (FFF) are increasingly encountered in forensic casework; however, their firing-cycle behavior and the stability of associated ballistic toolmarks remain poorly understood. In this study, Ruger 10/22-pattern FFF-printed receivers produced from polylactic acid (PLA) were evaluated under controlled indoor shooting range conditions alongside a factory-produced aluminum receiver using identical trigger, bolt, and barrel components. Fired cartridge-case first-impact coordinates were recorded in three dimensions to quantify ejection dispersio

Forensic reconstruction of two military combat related shooting incidents using an anatomically correct synthetic skull with a surrogate skin/soft tissue layer.

Six synthetic head models wearing ballistic protective helmets were used to recreate two military combat-related shooting incidents (three per incident, designated 'Incident 1' and 'Incident 2'). Data on the events including engagement distances, weapon and ammunition types was collated by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory. The models were shot with 7.62 × 39 mm ammunition downloaded to mean impact velocities of 581 m/s (SD 3.5 m/s) and 418 m/s (SD 8 m/s), respectively, to simulate the engagement distances. The damage to the models was assessed using CT imaging and dissection by a

Wound ballistics and the unusual injuries of the tandem bullet phenomenon: A systematic review of case-specific characteristics.

This study revisited the forensic literature to compile case-specific characteristics of the tandem-bullet phenomenon (TBP). A systematic review was performed following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocols (PRISMA-P) and The Joanna Briggs Institute's manual. The protocol was registered in Open Science Framework. Ten primary databases and two sources of grey literature were searched, with descriptive studies on TBP, with information about the victim, weapon, ammunition and injuries, being included. From an initial sample of 2360 studies, 13 were eligib

Unusual Projectile in Craniocerebral Trauma: A Medico-Legal Challenge in the Context of Riot-Control Interventions.

We report the case of a 15-year-old male who died instantly after being struck in the right occipitoparietal region by an unconventional projectile-a "crystal ball"-during a public protest in Medellín, Colombia. The projectile was fired from a 37 or 40 mm launcher modified with non-regulation ammunition. Autopsy findings, performed under the Minnesota Protocol, included cranial fracture, brain laceration, and subarachnoid hemorrhage. Although designed to be nonlethal, the improvised use of this kinetic ammunition converted it into a lethal weapon. This case highlights critical gaps in forensic

Extracorporeal bullet trajectory determination from scanned phantoms with bullet defects.

Shots with two different calibres (0.32 Auto and 9 mm Luger) were fired through phantoms that simulated human torsos, mounted on undercarriages with witness panels. The perforated phantoms were scanned with computed tomography (Siemens) using 80 kV and 140 kV and a slice thickness of 1 mm. The intracorporeal trajectories in the phantoms were compared to the known extracorporeal trajectories, derived from the perforations in witness panels. The discrepancy between the intracorporeal and extracorporeal trajectories, denoted as the absolute angle, was calculated for the trajectories before (front

A mystery: one wound, multiple bullets.

This case report provides an unusual presentation of a gunshot wound (GSW) and stresses the importance of gathering complete clinical, scene and historical information, if possible. Sufficient details regarding an injured patient's mechanism of injury (MOI) should be elicited by the treating physician when hemodynamic status of the patient allows. A careful physical exam is essential as are appropriate laboratory investigations and diagnostic imaging. We present a case report of a single GSW found on physical exam with multiple projectiles found on imaging studies. The history of present illne

Scanning electron microscope analysis of gunshot defects to bone: an underutilized source of information on ballistic trauma.

Recent years have seen increasing involvement by forensic anthropologists in the interpretation of skeletal trauma. With regard to ballistic injuries, there is now a large literature detailing gross features of such trauma; however, less attention has been given to microscopic characteristics. This article presents analysis of experimentally induced gunshot trauma in animal bone (Bos taurus scapulae) using full metal jacket (FMJ), soft point (SP), and captive bolt projectiles. The results were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Additional analysis was conducted on a purported p

Shot gun injuries: Fatal massive haemothorax following traumatic haemoperitoneum and trans-diaphragmatic blood migration.

Shotgun injuries provide a unique challenge to both forensic pathology and acute clinical care due to their complex internal ballistic behaviour and variable injury patterns. This report describes a case of a 33-year-old man who initially presented with apparent haemodynamic compensation following a mid-range abdominal shotgun injury; subsequently, he developed rapid respiratory deterioration and died. Post-mortem examination revealed a massive left-sided haemothorax caused not by direct thoracic injury, but by trans-diaphragmatic migration of blood from the abdominal cavity through multiple p

Fragmentation characteristics of long bones resulting from impact of different ammunition sizes.

Firearm violence has continued to increase, yet there remains a gap in the literature surrounding GSW fracture patterns to long bones. The majority of GSW research is centered on the cranium or thoracic bones, as they are most affiliated with fatal injuries. The present study examined differences in fragmentation and trauma characteristics on long bones caused by two ammunition types. White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) tibiae (n = 50) were encased in 10% ballistic gelatin, and 9 mm ammunition from a handgun and 5.56 mm ammunition from an assault rifle were fired from 3 yards (~2.74 m).

Thoracic Multiple-Gunshot Suicide in a Homicide-Suicide Incident: An Unusual Case.

BACKGROUND Suicide involving multiple gunshot wounds is rare, representing a small subset of firearm-related suicides, and presents significant challenges in distinguishing it from homicide. This difficulty is amplified in homicide-suicide scenarios, where accurate classification has major medico-legal implications. Thoracic wounds, particularly those involving the heart, are typically rapidly incapacitating, making multiple self-inflicted injuries unusual. CASE REPORT We present a case of a 43-year-old man who fatally shot his spouse, injured his stepdaughter, and then sustained 3 gunshot wou

A Novel Paradigm to Develop Regional Thoracoabdominal Criteria for Behind Armor Blunt Trauma Based on Original Data.

INTRODUCTION: For behind armor blunt trauma (BABT), recent prominent BABT standards for chest plate define a maximum deformation distance of 44 mm in clay. It was developed for soft body armor applications with limited animal, gelatin, and clay tests. The legacy criterion does not account for differing regional thoracoabdominal tolerances to behind armor-induced injury. This study examines the rationale and approaches used in the legacy BABT clay criterion and presents a novel paradigm to develop thoracoabdominal regional injury risk curves. Annular distribution patterns of .357 Magnum fragments in soft tissue simulants after striking hard material that prevented the bullet from exiting.

The distribution of bullet fragments inside the body can provide information for the reconstruction of events in shooting incidents. The formation of an annular distribution pattern of bullet fragments was recently presented in a case report. The fragments were scattered radially around an exit-re-entrance wound resulting from collision of the bullet with a floor tile immediately after perforating the body. Such an annular distribution pattern of bullet fragments around an exit-re-entrance wound would indicate that a body was in close contact with hard material, for instance, lying on hard gro

Line of fire - what happened at the Wantabadgery seige?

A gunfight between police and a gang of men led by the self-styled "Captain Moonlite", a.k.a. George Scott, occurred on 16th November 1879 at a farmhouse near Wantabadgery Station in the colony of New South Wales. The skirmish resulted in the deaths of two bushrangers and one police officer. As a result, Captain Moonlite and Thomas Rogan were hung in Sydney's Darlinghurst Gaol on 20 January 1880 for the murder of Constable Edward Webb-Bowen. Culpability for firing the fatal shot, however, has remained a source of controversy. Information obtained from an analysis of historical records was used

Reversed configuration of the muzzle imprint mark in a pistol contact entrance wound mimicking a non-suicidal act.

The muzzle imprint mark characteristically associated with contact or near contact entrance gunshot wounds exemplifies one of the most informative external findings in forensic medical practice. The presence of the muzzle imprint mark on the body's surface proves ballistic trauma, point of entry, and range of fire. Moreover, its appearance and configuration may indicate the type of the involved weapon and the way the firearm had been positioned and held at the time of discharge. In this paper, we present the contact shot wound pattern of an 83-year-old man who committed suicide with a Frommer

Keyhole lesion caused by a fatal self inflicted headshot with a modified flare gun.

In the following case report, we discuss the scene examination and autopsy results of an 86-year-old man who committed suicide in his closed garage by shooting himself in the head with a modified flare gun while seated in the passenger seat of his car. During the external examination of the autopsy an atypical injury on the scalp and skull showed the characteristics of both an entry and exit wound simultaneously, consistent with the phenomenon of a keyhole fracture. There are differing forensic interpretations regarding the mechanism of this fracture. One possible explanation is that it forms

Suicidal shot in the mouth with rubber bullets.

Rubber bullets weapons can have tragic consequences when used at short range and on vulnerable body areas. A man in his forties was found deceased at his house, covered in blood. A "non-lethal" firearm was found near the bed: the «SAPL GC27». This is a single shot handgun with mini Gomm Cogne ammunition: 12 rubber spherical pellets, 7.4 mm in diameter. The findings were consistent with an intra buccal shot, and an ingestion-inhalation of blood and projectiles. Cause of the death was linked to both the hemorrhage due to mouth and aero digestive crossroad trauma, responsible of a mechanical asph

[Gunshot wounds--ballistics, physiopathology, surgical treatment].

The form and size of gunshot wounds depend on the projectile type (bird shot, deforming projectiles, non-deforming projectiles), its velocity at impact (high or low velocity projectiles) and the type of tissue affected by the projectile (soft tissues, bones). Gunshot wounds are always contaminated. While low velocity projectiles usually cause minimal wounds, high velocity projectiles can cause large, devastating wounds. All projectiles fired from firearms have a high velocity on impact and may cause death by traumatic shock instantaneously. Ballistics, pathophysiology and clinical findings of
