Postmortem Abdominal Ultrasound in Healthy Wild Mammals for Application in Forensic Veterinary Medicine.

Diagnostic imaging methods have been used in human medicine to identify and examine cadavers to determine the cause of death. In veterinary medicine, the use of these resources is still scarce and little known, and it is necessary to establish the contribution that methods such as ultrasound could provide to the investigation of the cause of death in domestic and wild animals. Postmortem ultrasonography (PMUS) can help forensic science find injuries that even in conventional necropsy go unnoticed. Thus, knowing the sensitivity and accuracy of the method is important and, therefore, the present

European Council of Legal Medicine (ECLM) accreditation of forensic pathology services in Europe.

Forensic experts play a major role in the legal process as they offer professional expert opinion and evidence within the criminal justice system adjudicating on the innocence or alleged guilt of an accused person. In this respect, medico-legal examination is an essential part of the investigation process, determining in a scientific way the cause(s) and manner of unexpected and/or unnatural death or bringing clinical evidence in case of physical, psychological, or sexual abuse in living people. From a legal perspective, these types of investigation must meet international standards, i.e., it

[HIV-1 prevalence in forensic medicine examination of fatalities (Hamburg and Munich 1989)].

All fatalities investigated at the Institutes of Forensic Medicine in Hamburg and Munich are screened for HIV-1-antibodies. The serological findings of 1,000 consecutive cases in the year 1989 were compared concerning HIV-1-prevalence, riskgroup, age and sex distribution. The prevalence rate of HIV-1-antibodies was 5% in Hamburg and 6% in Munich. The HIV-seropositives were mainly i.v.-drug users and homosexuals dying from unnatural causes. Unexpectedly HIV-infection was also present in two males of advanced age with myocardial infarction. The HIV-1-prevalence rate of all drug related fatalitie

Ondine's Curse - Genetic and Iatrogenic Central Hypoventilation as Diagnostic Options in Forensic Medicine.

In the Nordic mythology a man lost his ability to breathe without remembering it after he was cursed by water nymph - referred to as 'Ondine's curse' - and then he died as soon as he fell asleep. Family medicine specialists are familiar with many sleeping disorders that their patients commonly call by the term Ondine's Curse. In medical sciences this term is historically related to the group of conditions that have as the common denominator seemingly spontaneous onset of life-threatening hypoventilation. The physiology and genetics specialists focus mainly on congenital central hypoventilation

Suddenly deceased young individuals autopsied at the Department of forensic medicine, Brno - analysis.

UNLABELLED: Determination of the cause of death in sudden deaths of young people is a relatively common problem in routine medical practice. In cases of poor or negative morphologic findings at autopsy and poor or negative test results from laboratory, diagnostic quandary can occur. The grant project IGA MZ CR (Internal Grant Agency of the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic) targets cases of the sudden deaths of young people under 40 years of age, where, even after an autopsy performed, and other laboratory examinations at the Department of Forensic Medicine are completed, it fails to de

[Toxic alcohol dysmyelopoiesis--bone marrow histology studies of a forensic medicine autopsy sample].

Histological evaluation of bone marrow in 30 autopsy cases with a history of chronic alcohol consumption revealed characteristic changes concerning the medullary iron distribution and, first and foremost, the erythropoiesis, which was found to be macroblastic. These autoptic findings reflected the pattern of alcoholic dyshematopoiesis resulting from a toxic effect of alcohol on the bone marrow, well-known from biopsies and aspirates of alcohol-dependent patients and combined with hemochromatosis-associated plasma cell iron in the marrow and elevation of median corpuscular volume of erythrocyte

CT diagnosis of toxic brain injury in cyanide poisoning: considerations for forensic medicine.

Two deaths occurred after ingestion of cyanide-containing Extra-Strength Excedrin capsules. Cranial CT scans obtained within 3 hr of each patient's collapse showed diffuse cerebral swelling and loss of gray-white differentiation. Most diffuse cerebral insults (hypoxia, ischemia) do not show such changes so soon after injury. The early onset of diffuse cerebral edema with loss of gray-white differentiation may be a clue to the diagnosis of acute cyanide poisoning.

Injury as a silent witness: forensic medicine's role in the legal qualification of an explosive case.

In forensic practice, the reconstruction of criminal behavior and charge determination are often entrusted solely to law enforcement, with forensic medicine playing a marginal, confirmatory role. Nonetheless, accurate injury analysis remains fundamental and, in specific contexts, may be decisive. The authors present a case that underscores the crucial role of interdisciplinary forensic collaboration - particularly between forensic pathologist and ballistics expert - in the reconstruction of the event dynamics and in supporting judicial decision-making aimed at the accurate charge determination

The concept of forensic emergency medicine as illustrated by an unusual complication of pulmonary artery catheterization.

Forensic pathologists are regularly confronted with emergency and invasive medical procedures performed on critically ill or traumatized patients. Basic knowledge of such procedures and their possible complications is therefore mandatory in medico-legal practice. In this article, we describe a very unusual complication of pulmonary artery catheterization: through-and-through perforation of the carotid artery, initially without hemodynamic consequence. Death resulted from an aggravation of the preexisting cerebral edema (secondary to a craniocerebral trauma). The misplacement of the pulmonary a

The Tea-Steeping Metaphor: Origin, Application, Advantages, Disadvantages, and Impact on Forensic Medicine Teaching.

Modern medical education increasingly emphasizes deep learning, professional identity formation (PIF), and longitudinal competency development. The tea-steeping metaphor, drawn from the gradual infusion process of tea leaves into water, offers a novel lens to conceptualize immersive and time-dependent learning. This metaphor holds particular relevance in forensic medicine, where learners must develop a nuanced understanding of medico-legal principles, ethical reasoning, and procedural competence over time. Objective of this article is to explore the origin, educational applications, benefits,

Neurological symptoms in pediatric abusive head trauma: Multi-center data for clinical forensic medicine.

Central nervous system-associated lesions can frequently be found in abusive head trauma (AHT) cases. Since there are frequently no visible signs of injury on the body surface, the diagnosis of AHT can be challenging. In particular, if the affected child shows only isolated neurological symptoms, these are often misinterpreted as a minor illness. Using a retrospective study design at three university hospitals, 72 medico-legal cases of "shaken baby syndrome" - a common variant of AHT - were analyzed. A comparison between confession cases (n=15) and non-confession cases was used in order to red

Literature review on forensic implications of illicit drug metabolism: A medicinal chemistry perspective.

The metabolic processes of illicit substances are crucial within the realm of forensic toxicology, affecting the detection, analysis, and interpretation of drugs in legal and investigative contexts. Substances like opioids, cannabinoids, hallucinogens, benzodiazepines, and novel psychoactive substances (NPS) experience metabolic alterations primarily through Phase I (oxidation, reduction, hydrolysis) and Phase II (glucuronidation, sulfation) transformations. Fundamentally governed by cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes, they significantly influence the detectability and potential toxicity of the com

Battered child syndrome in the records of the Department of Forensic Medicine, Medical University of Białystok.

Violence against children has been until now recognised as physical aggression escalating from corporal punishment, hard physical labour to homicide. Nowadays child abuse is considered as maltreatment occurring in four different aspects: physical abuse, psychological abuse, sexual abuse and neglect. Child abuse is difficult to disclose, as it is concealed both by the perpetrators and the victims. The child is afraid and at the same time, almost always ashamed of looking for help. The victim frequently feels guilty, considers the violence as a norm, but in many cases is not able to speek precis
