Vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) have various causes, including osteoporosis, neoplasms, and acute trauma. As painful VCFs may contribute to general physical deconditioning, management of painful VCFs has the potential for improving quality of life and preventing superimposed medical complications. Various imaging modalities can be used to evaluate a VCF to help determine the etiology and guide intervention. The first-line treatment of painful VCFs has been nonoperative or conservative management as most VCFs show gradual improvement in pain over 2 to 12 weeks, with variable return of fu

Compression techniques seem to be the primary factor in determining the success of both plating and nailing techniques for the management of acute fractures and for delayed and nonunion management of these fractures. An intramedullary nail that can provide continual compression (like a plate) and mechanical manipulation of the callous throughout the course of treatment is an ideal device that provides all the advantages of plating and nailing and avoids the noted limitations of both. The UNYTE compression humeral nail is based on the PRECICE intramedullary limb lengthening system. This nail pr

Tumor related fractures of the spine frequently dictate surgical management. The most critical factors influencing the need and type of surgery are degree of epidural cord compression, radiosensitivity of the tumor, presence of spinal instability and patient medical status/ estimated survivorship. There is a wide spectrum of therapeutic options: major en bloc resections in primary or oligometastatic disease; decompression and fusion in non-radiosensitive tumors with cord compression followed by adjuvant radiation therapy (RT); kyphoplasty/ vertebroplasty for stable compression fractures or min

OBJECTIVE: This report is to present the results of treatment of women suffering from postpartum osteoporosis and eight-level thoracolumbar compression fractures, and how they improved through clinical manifestation and bone mineral density (BMD).
METHODS: Radiological evaluation revealed eight-level compression fractures over the thoracolumbar vertebrae of the 31-year-old women that were suffering with back pains and radiating pains for 4 months after child-birth. Bone mineral densitometry showed significantly decreased lumbar T score, while other laboratory findings related to calcium metab

Vertebral compression fractures are common in malignant disease and frequently cause severe back pain. However, management of that pain with conventional medical, radiotherapy, or surgical modalities is often inadequate. Vertebral augmentation techniques, such as vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty, are minimally invasive techniques in which methylmethacrylate bone cement is percutaneously injected into compressed vertebral bodies. Vertebral augmentation often improves mechanical stability of compressed vertebrae, provides pain relief, and may prevent progression of vertebral collapse. Kyphoplasty

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Vertebroplasty is commonly used for osteoporotic and neoplastic compression fractures, yet little evidence exists for its use in traumatic nonosteoporotic compression fractures. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of percutaneous vertebroplasty for patients with traumatic nonosteoporotic compression fractures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of 819 patients (982 procedures) who underwent percutaneous vertebroplasty, to identify patients who had normal bone mineral densitometry scores or had no previous diagnosis

As the aging population grows, vertebral compression fractures are becoming an important source of pain and dysfunction. Management can be complex, because care may require multiple treatment modalities and the treatment plan must be tailored to the individual's pain, functional limitations, and goals. Treatment options usually involve a combination of medications, bracing, and physical therapy. This article reviews current recommendations for managing vertebral compression fractures. Indications, complications, and treatment options, including vertebral augmentation, are discussed.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between initial radiographs of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) and clinical results.
METHODS: Of the 135 VCFs in the elderly, 73 consecutive patients (84 vertebrae) were reviewed retrospectively. All patients were treated without rigid immobilization. The subjects consisted of 15 men and 58 women. The mean age was 75.0 years with a range from 61 to 91 years. The early radiographic features were classified into five types based on lateral radiographs. Radiographic results during follow-up were evaluated ac

PURPOSE: To determine the efficacy of percutaneous vertebroplasty in treating severe vertebral body compression fractures, or vertebra plana, in patients with osteoporosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 155 patients, 310 percutaneous vertebroplasties were performed during 25 months and 15 days. Of these, 37 patients (27 women, 10 men; mean age, 73.6 years) underwent 48 vertebroplasties for severe osteoporotic vertebral body compression fractures. The fractures were defined as vertebrae that have collapsed to less than one-third of their original height. Imaging and clinical features were analyzed

Between 1984 and 1986, 10 patients who sustained a femur fracture about a hip prosthesis were treated with open reduction and internal fixation using compression plating. Nine of the 10 fractures healed in an average time of 5 months. Other than one nonunion, no significant complications were noted. Follow-up study, ranging from 13 to 44 months (average, 26 months), was obtained on all 10 patients. One had a loose femoral component, which was attributed to inadequate stem size. None of the other patients had either clinical or radiographic evidence of loosening. Based on Harris hip scores, the

Thirty patients with acute, painful vertebral compression fracture were studied. Certain vertebrae, namely T8, T12, L1 and L4, were more likely to fracture. The majority occurred spontaneously (46%) or after trivial strain (36%). Of the former, 30% occurred whilst in bed. Radiation to the flanks and anteriorly was common (66%) but leg radiation was uncommon (6%). Associated symptoms noted were: nausea (26%), abdominal pain (20%), chest pain (13%). Straining exacerbated pain in only 60%. The position of comfort was lying flat (43%) or sitting (36%) but 16% found standing or walking most comfort

BACKGROUND: Kyphoplasty effectively treats vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) but carries risks of perioperative complications and readmissions. Blue zones, regions characterized by longevity and reduced chronic disease, provide a unique opportunity to examine how lifestyle factors may influence surgical outcomes. This study investigated how patient demographics, health status, surgical factors, and geographic location, particularly residence in a blue zone, affected kyphoplasty outcomes.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort review of 372 patients undergoing kyphoplasty for VCFs from January 2

BACKGROUND: Vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) contribute substantially to pain, disability, and healthcare burden. Vertebroplasty and balloon kyphoplasty (KP) are widely used but limited by cement leakage and inconsistent vertebral height restoration. Mechanical vertebral augmentation (MVA) techniques were developed to improve vertebral alignment and cement containment, yet their comparative outcomes remain incompletely defined.
OBJECTIVES: To map and synthesize the existing evidence on MVA compared with KP or vertebroplasty across seven clinically relevant domains, including cement extr

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Unstable pelvic ring injuries often occur in high energy traumas. Vertical sacrum fracture is an associated injury. This report describes a late spinal nerve compression that occurred following surgical reduction and fixation of pelvic ring injuries caused by traumatic L5-S1 disc herniation and malposition of the sacral fracture.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 61-year-old female presented with radiculopathy in her right leg after surgical reduction and fixation of a sacral and pelvic fracture. Physical examination revealed numbness and weakness of the right leg. Radiographi

Osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs) are the most common fragility fracture and significantly influence the quality of life in the elderly. Currently, the literature lacks a comprehensive narrative review of the management of OVCFs. The purpose of this study is to review background information, diagnosis, and surgical and non-surgical management of the OVCFs. A comprehensive search of PubMed and Google Scholar for articles in the English language between 1980 and 2021 was performed. Combinations of the following terms were used: compression fractures, vertebral compression frac
