BACKGROUND: Schistosoma species are responsible for the disease schistosomiasis, a highly prevalent helminthic disease that requires a freshwater snail as intermediate host. The S. mansoni free-living miracidium must utilize olfaction to find a suitable snail host, and certain types of rhodopsin G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) and ionotropic receptors (IRs) have been identified as olfactory receptors in other animal phyla. The Schistosoma genome project, together with the recent availability of proteomic databases, allowed for studies to explore receptors within S. mansoni, some of which m

It has been 50 years since the first case of primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), an acute and rapidly fatal disease of the central nervous system (CNS), was reported in Australia. It is now known that the aetiological agent of PAM is Naegleria fowleri, an amoeba that is commonly known as 'the brain-eating amoeba'. N. fowleri infects humans of different ages who are in contact with water contaminated with this micro-organism. N. fowleri is distributed worldwide and is found growing in bodies of freshwater in tropical and subtropical environments. The number of PAM cases has recently incr

On Aug 21, 1875, James McConnell published in The Lancet his findings from a post-mortem examination of a 20-year-old Chinese man--undertaken at the Medical College Hospital in Calcutta, India--in whom he found Clonorchis sinensis in the bile ducts. Now, exactly 140 years later, we have a sound understanding of the lifecycle of this liver fluke, including key clinical, diagnostic, and epidemiological features. Developments in the so-called -omics sciences have not only advanced our knowledge of the biology and pathology of the parasite, but also led to the discovery of new diagnostic, drug, an

The Liolopidae (Diplostomoidea) are a small family of digeneans that parasitize reptiles and amphibians as adults. Knowledge of intermediate hosts in this family remains scarce, leaving a major gap in the understanding of liolopid biology. To date, the only fully elucidated life cycle is that of Liolope copulans Cohn 1902, a species infecting Asian salamanders, with no other cercarial or metacercarial stages known. This study aimed to identify potential intermediate hosts for Paraharmotrema karinganiense, found in several chelonian species from southeastern Mozambique and South Africa. African

A main goal of evolutionary biology is to understand the genetic basis of adaptive evolution. Although the genes that underlie some adaptive phenotypes are now known, the molecular pathways and regulatory mechanisms mediating the phenotypic effects of those genes often remain a black box. Unveiling this black box is necessary to fully understand the genetic basis of adaptive phenotypes, and to understand why particular genes might be used during phenotypic evolution. Here, we investigated which genes and regulatory mechanisms are mediating the phenotypic effects of the Eda haplotype, a locus r

Naegleria fowleri is a single-cell organism living in warm freshwater that can become a deadly human pathogen known as a brain-eating amoeba. The condition caused by N. fowleri, primary amoebic meningoencephalitis, is usually a fatal infection of the brain with rapid and severe onset. Iron is a common element on earth and a crucial cofactor for all living organisms. However, its bioavailable form can be scarce in certain niches, where it becomes a factor that limits growth. To obtain iron, many pathogens use different machineries to exploit an iron-withholding strategy that has evolved in mamm

The transition from breathing air to breathing water requires physiological and morphological adaptations. The study of crustaceans in transitional habitats provides important information as to the nature of these adaptations. This article addresses the physiology of air breathing in amphibious and terrestrial crabs and their relative locomotor abilities. Potamonautes warreni is an apparently amphibious freshwater crab from southern Africa, Cardisoma hirtipes is an air-breathing gecarcinid crab with some dependency on freshwater, and Gecarcoidea natalis is an obligate air-breathing gecarcinid

Symbiotic relationships are a vital component of the stability and function of ecosystems. Despite their importance, our understanding of many key symbiotic relationships is rudimentary. Within freshwater ecosystems, crayfish are considered keystone species and ecosystem engineers, in addition to serving as a host to multiple ectosymbionts. Recent studies on crayfish symbioses have primarily focused on branchiobdellidan worms in isolation, showcasing context-dependent mutualistic and parasitic fitness outcomes for the crayfish hosts. However, in natural environments, branchiobdellidan worms of

The Nile perch (np; Lates niloticus) is a freshwater teleost species with a potential for aquaculture in freshwater surroundings. However, wild-caught breeders have persistently failed to spawn spontaneously in captivity. Cloning of the gonadotropin subunits and analysing seasonal variation in reproductive hormone levels for a 1-year period were done to gain knowledge on the physiological basis underlying the reproductive biology of np. The β-follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH-β) and β-luteinizing hormone (LH-β) subunits and their common α-glycoprotein (Gph-α) subunit were cloned using 3' and 5

AbstractReproduction is an energetically demanding process requiring trade-offs between somatic growth, maintenance, and reproductive investment. This study aimed to investigate the reproductive biology and energy management of the freshwater prawn Palaemon argentinus in its natural habitat. We thus analyzed the population dynamics, reproductive performance (fecundity, egg size, and reproductive output), and female energy allocation strategies (capital or income) during ovarian development by examining the relationship between the hepatosomatic index and the gonadosomatic index. We also compar

Bisphenol A (BPA), a common industrial chemical used in plastics and consumer products, is increasingly detected in aquatic environments, raising serious concerns about its potential ecological impacts. This study evaluated the sublethal and acute toxic effects of BPA on the freshwater planarian Girardia tigrina, a recognized model for neurotoxicity and regenerative biology. Acute exposure revealed a time-dependent decrease in LC50 values, from 53.18 μM at 24 h to 22.38 μM at 96 h. Behavioral assays showed significant locomotor impairment, with activity reduced by 36.7% and 57.2% at 1.0 and 5.

The present review summarizes studies on the morphology and cell biology of the developing epidermis in the alligator as an example of archosaurian reptile. From an initial, two-layered epidermis, numerous suprabasal keratinocytes are produced at late stages of embryonic development, some days before hatching. The soft embryonic epidermis contains mucous granules, cysteine-poor IF-keratins and trichohyalin-like proteins produced from genes located in different chromosomal loci, including the EDC (Epidermal Differentiation Complex). These proteins contribute to the mild keratinization of the em

Although most studies of digenetic trematodes of the family Schistosomatidae dwell on representatives causing human schistosomiasis, the majority of the 130 identified species of schistosomes infect birds or non-human mammals. The cercariae of many of these species can cause swimmer's itch when they penetrate human skin. Recent years have witnessed a dramatic increase in our understanding of schistosome diversity, now encompassing 17 genera with eight more lineages awaiting description. Collectively, schistosomes exploit 16 families of caenogastropod or heterobranch gastropod intermediate host

Adult trematodes of Allocreadium Looss, 1900 (Digenea) infect the intestine of mostly freshwater fishes in Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas. During routine parasitological surveys in the Vaal River system, adult trematodes were collected from the intestine of smallmouth yellowfish, Labeobarbus aeneus (Burchell). The trematodes were confirmed to represent a member of Allocreadium and did not match any existing taxon. Therefore, they are described as a new species, Allocreadium apokryfi sp. n. The morphology of the new species most closely resembles that of Allocreadium aswanense El-Naffar,

Local adaptation--typically recognized as higher values of fitness-related traits for native vs. non-native individuals when measured in the native environment--is common in natural populations because of pervasive spatial variation in the intensity and type of natural selection. Although local adaptation has been primarily studied in the context of biotic interactions, widespread variation in abiotic characteristics of environments suggests that local adaptation in response to abiotic factors should also be common. Potamopyrgus antipodarum, a freshwater New Zealand snail that is an important

1. Urban streams are degraded by a suite of factors, including burial beneath urban infrastructure, such as roads or parking lots, which eliminates light and reduces direct organic matter inputs to streams from riparian zones. These changes to stream metabolism and terrestrial carbon contribution will likely have consequences for organic matter metabolism by microbes and dissolved organic matter (DOM) use patterns in streams. Respiration by heterotrophic biofilms drives the nitrogen and phosphorus cycles, but we lack a clear understanding of how stream burial and seasonality affect microbial c

BACKGROUND: Ostracods are small bivalved crustaceans that inhabit a wide range of aquatic environments, from fully marine to brackish and freshwater systems. All non-marine species belong to the order Podocopida. The sensory biology and behavioral capacities of ostracods remain poorly understood, even though these traits play pivotal roles in habitat exploration, food searching, mate recognition, and predator avoidance. In particular, studies addressing vision and learning ability are still scarce. Although visual structures in ostracods are often reduced or simplified, they exhibit considerab

Pharmaceuticals have been acknowledged as an important contaminant of emerging concern with the potential to cause adverse effects in exposed fauna. Most research has focused on temperate freshwater systems; therefore, there is a pressing need to quantify pharmaceutical exposure in subtropical coastal marine systems. This study investigated the prevalence of pharmaceutical exposure to bonefish (Albula vulpes) in subtropical South Florida, USA, and evaluated the relative risk of detected concentrations to elicit pharmacological effects. The influence of sampling region, season (within or outsid

We redescribe an extinct river shark, Glyphis pagoda (Noetling), on the basis of 20 teeth newly collected from three different Miocene localities in Myanmar. One locality is a nearshore marine deposit (Obogon Formation) whereas the other two localities represent terrestrial freshwater deposits (Irrawaddy sediments), suggesting that G. pagoda from the Irrawaddy sediments was capable of tolerating low salinity like the extant Glyphis. Glyphis pagoda likely reached up to at least 185 cm in total body length and was probably piscivorous. The fossil species occurs in rocks of Myanmar and eastern an
