BACKGROUND: Mohs surgeons routinely encounter squamous cell carcinoma at surgical margins and often base the decision to take another layer on the severity of atypia observed. Currently, no criteria exists for distinguishing borderline histological patterns that could be interpreted differently as actinic keratosis (AK), squamous cell carcinoma in situ (SCCIS), or AK with focal SCCIS.
OBJECTIVE: To assess interrater concordance amongst Mohs surgeons in distinguishing AK from SCCIS when evaluating Mohs frozen sections.
METHODS: Seventeen slides were selected and converted into digitally forma

The development of antibodies that specifically detect histidine-phosphorylated proteins is a recent achievement and allows potential roles of histidine phosphorylated proteins in pathological and physiological conditions to be characterized. Immunohistochemical analyses enable the detection of proteins in tissues and can reveal alterations to the quantity and/or localization of these proteins through comparisons of normal and diseased specimens. However, the sensitivity of phosphohistidine modifications to phosphatases, acidic pH, and elevated temperatures poses unique challenges to the detec

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate denudation (no urothelium present for evaluation) and atypia (urothelial carcinoma in situ [CIS] cannot be ruled out) on frozen sections (FSs) of ureteral and urethral margins in radical cystectomies and cystoprostatectomies.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In radical cystectomies from 2000-2012, we compared FS diagnoses with the corresponding permanent section of the same tissue (frozen section control [FSC]). We also compared FS to "any CIS," which assessed whether there was any CIS in a given ureter or urethra, combining the diagnoses on "frozen section control" and on all su

Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs) resection margins are assessed intraoperatively using frozen section (IFS) pathology. We conducted a systematic review to evaluate the concordance of IFS with permanent histopathology and the association between IFS margin status and recurrence. A systematic review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. We queried PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Google Scholar for studies reporting IFS in patients undergoing resection for IPMN. Data, including IFS margin status, recurrence rates, an

Frozen sections are performed in pancreatic surgery for three reasons: histopathological confirmation of previously unclear space-occupying lesions, determination of the extent of surgical resection in an operative exploration and for possible follow-up resections after previously carried out surgical resections. Overall, in the literature there are heterogeneous data with respect to an improvement in the prognosis of a secondary R0 resection by a repeat resection in comparison to a R1 resection. Nowadays, extended pancreatic resections including vascular resections are technically feasible an

We present a case of endonasal leishmaniasis diagnosed on a frozen section biopsy specimen obtained from a 47-year-old woman treated with corticosteroids and anti-TNFα for rheumatoid arthritis. Similar cases of isolated mucosal leishmaniasis have not yet been reported in Croatia. Microscopic analysis of the biopsy specimen sent for frozen sections revealed Leishmania amastigotes in macrophages infiltrating nasal mucosa. Subsequent communication with the referring clinician revealed that the patient had been diagnosed with visceral leishmaniasis 13 years prior to current biopsy. Thus, the prese

In endocrine pathology, frozen section (FS) examination is most commonly used for the intraoperative evaluation of thyroid and parathyroid tumors, as well as cervical lymph nodes. In the past, frozen section was considered a fundamental tool in thyroid surgery. However, with advancements in preoperative ultrasound and fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB), there have been increasing queries about its routine use due to the improved preoperative diagnosis. Nowadays, while the use of FS during thyroidectomy has decreased, it is still used as an additional method for different purposes intraoperat

BACKGROUND: Ovarian Cancer (OC) constitute the eighth most common cancers among women worldwide. Surgery remains the cornerstone in the management of OC. Intraoperative frozen section (FS) diagnosis is widely used to decide the surgery course. We aimed to assess the reliability of intraoperative FS diagnosis for treatment planning of patients with suspected OC from a multidisciplinary perspective. The clinical consequences of reclassification and the multidisciplinary management of the therapy plan, is the secondary aim of this study. To our knowledge, this information is sparely investigated.

Xanthogranuloma (XG) of the sellar region is uncommon and is difficult to diagnose based on intraoperative frozen sections. This study is a case presentation and review of the literature, highlighting the need to explore underlying diseases in order to guarantee an accurate patient diagnosis. Herein, we presented the case of a 43-year-old woman who was afflicted with xanthogranuloma of the sellar region; the patient had a history of headache and lengthened menstrual cycles over the 6 months prior to presentation. Endocrinology tests revealed that the patient's levels of prolactin were high and

This article outlines features of the biology of well differentiated thyroid cancer, and how these impact on systems of risk prediction. It covers salient points that the surgeon should consider from the clinical history and examination in the office, and outlines the procedures available for surgical management of thyroid cancer. The article then examines the choices that face thyroid surgeons both in relation to planning primary thyroid surgery and the approach to regional lymphadenectomy. In addition, key findings in the operating room are discussed in relation to their impact on decision m

Frozen section exam is a peroperative analysis that allows an immediate histopathological diagnosis. Its result influences the extent of surgery. First used only for intraoperative histologic diagnosis, frozen section exam has modified its place nowadays due to the progress in screening methods and preoperative histologic diagnosis. Conservative treatment and sentinel lymph node biopsy technique has orientated frozen section exam towards the evaluation of the sentinel lymph node metastasis and the specimen margins. Sentinel lymph node method remains open to new persectives, influencing therapy

CONTEXT: Intraoperative consultation is frequently requested by surgeons operating on the gastrointestinal tract, appendix, and peritoneum. In this setting, the pathologist's diagnosis plays a central role in determining whether a resection is needed, and if so, how much to resect and whether it was adequate. There is no room for errors in the frozen section laboratory, because a small mistake can have serious consequences. To my knowledge, no recent books or publications in the literature have dealt with this important topic.
OBJECTIVE: To review the intraoperative consultation of the gastro

The authors compared the diagnoses from intraoperative frozen section consultation with the final diagnosis using permanent tissue sections from 179 breast biopsy specimens. Of these, there were 175 correct diagnoses (97.8%), two diagnoses were incorrect (1.1%) and two were inconclusive (1.1%). The distribution of the correct diagnoses within each particular group of breast diseases proves that in the invasive tumor group the diagnosis on FS was correct for 101 patients (98.1%) and incorrect for two patients (1.9%). In the fibrocystic breast disease group, diagnoses correlated for 42 patients

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis and treatment of submandibular lesions is challenging. Carcinomas, which frequently occur, should be surgically removed with sufficient safety margins, while simultaneously protecting functional structures. In particular, the preservation of neuronal structures with simultaneous tumor control suggests that single-stage concepts are appropriate, although they are not yet established. The aim of this study was to evaluate intraoperative frozen section biopsy as a possible basis for a one-stage surgical concept to thus prevent functional alterations by reoperation.

Up to now intraoperative frozen section, diagnosis has been of limited utility in urologic oncology. In the future, it may become more important due to a significant increase in the number of nerve-sparing operations performed for prostate cancer. Accuracy and benefit of intraoperative frozen sections depend both on a good communication between surgeons and pathologists as well as on a strict assessment of the need for surgery in the individual patient. In order to optimize cost-efficiency and to reduce the associated risks the indications for intraoperative frozen sections must be rigorously

Tumoral pathology of the mediastinum is extremely varied, with different prognoses and treatments. The pathological examination is essential, both etiologically and prognostically. Mediastinoscopy is generally used to check for lymph node metastases, bronchopulmonary carcinoma, but also, to a lesser degree, for the exploration of isolated mediastinal adenopathy. Finally, this technique enables a diagnostic approach to mediastinal tumours. The frozen section has its place, at the first indication, making it possible to prescribe neoadjuvant chemotherapy, and in the other situations to make sure

We developed an automatic method based on a convolutional neural network (CNN) that identifies metastatic lesions in whole slide images (WSI) of intraoperative frozen sections from sentinel lymph nodes in breast cancer. A total of 954 sentinel lymph node frozen sections, encompassing all types of breast cancer, were collected and examined at our institution between January 1, 2021, and September 27, 2022. Seventy-two cases from a total of 954 cases, including 50 macrometastases, 16 micrometastases, and 6 negatives, were selected and annotated for training a model, which was a self-developed pl
