Identification of a novel allele of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARG) and its association with resistance to Aeromonas salmonicida in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar).

Bacterial and viral diseases are major problems in Atlantic salmon aquaculture, but may be challenged through selection of brood stock with enhanced survival to diseases. Today's selection strategy is based on controlled challenge tests using siblings of the breeding candidates, and is thus indirect. Direct trait records on breeding candidates can potentially be provided through identification of genetic variation linked to the susceptibility to the disease. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARG) is a lipid-sensing transcription factor primarily known for inducing fat-accumul

ADSRRS-fingerprinting and PCR MP techniques for studies of intraspecies genetic relatedness in Staphylococcus aureus.

The present study was designed to evaluate the usefulness of two novel molecular typing methods, amplification of DNA fragments surrounding rare restriction sites (ADSRRS-fingerprinting) and the PCR melting profile (PCR MP), for Staphylococcus aureus strain differentiation. Thirty-seven S. aureus strains isolated from patients with a history of furunculosis were studied. The strains were identified by determining several phenotypic properties and were genotyped using three differentiation methods: macrorestriction analysis of the chromosomal DNA by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (REA-PFGE),

The Intersection of Human and Veterinary Medicine-A Possible Direction towards the Improvement of Cell Therapy Protocols in the Treatment of Perianal Fistulas.

The effective treatment of perianal fistulizing Crohn's disease is still a challenge. Local administration of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) is becoming a part of accepted treatment options. However, as a fledgling technique, it still can be optimized. A new trend in translational research, which is in line with "One Health" approach, bases on exploiting parallels between naturally occurring diseases affecting humans and companion animals. Canine anal furunculosis (AF) has been indicated as condition analogous to human perianal Crohn's disease (pCD). This narrative review provides the first

Medical problems in refugee children evacuated from South Vietnam.

One hundred and fourteen refugee children from South Vietnam showed similar disease prevalences to refugee children from Bangladesh. Common diseases were malnutrition, gastroenteritis, pneumonia and bronchitis, scabies and furunculosis. Seven children died, five from pneumonia complicated by malnutrition. Increased awareness of the high incidence of Pneumocystis pneumonia and more careful assessment of nutritional status may reduce mortality in future groups of refugee children evacuated to Australia.

Genomic Analysis of Aeromonas salmonicida ssp. salmonicida Isolates Collected During Multiple Clinical Outbreaks Supports Association with a Single Epidemiological Unit.

Outbreaks of furunculosis cause significant losses in salmonid aquaculture worldwide. With a recent rise in antimicrobial resistance, regulatory measures to minimize the use of antibiotics in animal husbandry, including aquaculture, have increased scrutiny and availability of veterinary medical products to control this disease in production facilities. In such a regulatory environment, the utility of autogenous vaccines to assist with disease prevention and control as a veterinary-guided prophylactic measure is of high interest to the producers and veterinary services alike. However, evolving

Diseases of north European wrasse (Labridae) and possible interactions with cohabited farmed salmon, Salmo salar L.

There have been several reported studies of wrasse health but none of these has shown transmission of wrasse diseases when stocked with farmed Atlantic salmon. Most of the studies have focussed on bacterial and parasite issues, including treatment of bacterial diseases with antibiotics and vaccination of wrasse. Classical and atypical furunculosis have been reported in wrasse following stress, and wrasse have been susceptible to vibrio infection. Further study is required on the vaccination of wrasse for furunculosis with latent carrier status to maximize survival. There are studies on viral d

Recognizing pyoderma: more difficult than it may seem.

Although bacterial pyoderma is among the most commonly encountered dermatologic conditions in dogs, some cases present diagnostic challenges even to experienced clinicians. This article presents several unusual manifestations of pyoderma, including bullous impetigo, superficial spreading pyoderma, mucocutaneous pyoderma, and post-grooming furunculosis. Conditions mimicking pyoderma, including juvenile cellulitis, immunomodulatory-responsive lymphocytic-plasmacytic pododermatitis, and pemphigus foliaceus are also described. Diagnostic techniques used for diagnosing and characterizing pyoderma a

Smoker's boils.

BACKGROUND: About 90% of patients with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) are smokers. A crucial eliciting role of smoking appears to be certain. In order to increase the awareness of this avoidable major cause of the disease and to facilitate the recognition of incipient disorder, we propose the more specific term 'smoker's boils' for HS lesions of patients who are smokers. METHOD: Clinical pictures of early lesions are presented. For the exceptional cases occurring in nonsmokers, the traditional name HS, representing an umbrella term, is adequate. RESULT/CONCLUSION: The renaming of HS as smoker

[Myiasis caused by Dermatobia hominis].

In two patients, a woman of 35 and a man of 62 years old, myiasis caused by the larvae of the fly Dermatobia hominis was diagnosed. Both patients had recently returned from a visit to Central America. This ectoparasitosis is found in Central and South America. Patients present themselves with an insect bite which fails to heal. If the clinical presentation is unknown, the disease may well be mistaken for furunculosis. The condition may be easily treated by applying vaseline to the insect bite, which causes extrusion of the larva.

Severe Adult Kerion Celsi With Rapid Improvement During Systemic Antifungal and Adjunctive Secretome Therapy: A Case Report.

Kerion celsi is a severe inflammatory form of tinea capitis that is uncommon in adults and may mimic bacterial furunculosis, abscess, or cellulitis, resulting in delayed diagnosis and antibiotic-only treatment. We report a 48-year-old woman with a one-month history of a painful, purulent, crusted lesion on the left temporal and retroauricular scalp, localized alopecia, and ipsilateral periorbital edema. She reported close exposure to 10 cats daily and did not improve after treatment for presumed furunculosis. Potassium hydroxide examination demonstrated fungal elements. Fungal culture and lact

Effects of anabolic-androgenic steroids on the pilosebaceous unit.

Examination of skin biopsy specimens from persons using anabolic-androgenic steroids demonstrates dramatic hypertrophy of the sebaceous glands. High dosages of testosterone and anabolic-androgenic steroids, often self-administered by athletes, increase skin surface lipids, the cutaneous population of Propionibacteria acnes and the cholesterol and free fatty acids of the skin surface lipids. Acne, oily hair and skin, sebaceous cysts, hirsutism, androgenic alopecia, striae atrophicae, seborrheic dermatitis, and secondary infections including furunculosis may occur in persons using these drugs.

[Skin and soft tissue infections].

Skin- and Soft tissue infections are a frequent problem in hospital as well as in ambulatory care. Diagnostic procedures and treatment principles have to include the most frequent pathogens. While the acute forms of skin and soft tissue infections, with, necrotising fasciitis as important exception, rarely cause diagnostic or therapeutic problem, the treatment of patients with recurrent furunculosis, chronic wounds and diabetic feet is often difficult and frustration for patients and physicians. This article gives an overview of the most important problems and treatment strategies.

A New Skin Manifestation at the Site of a Previously Healed Dermatosis: A Case of Wolf's Isotopic Response.

Wolf's isotopic response (WIR) is an uncommon phenomenon that refers to the occurrence of a new skin condition at the location of a previously healed dermatosis. We describe an unusual manifestation of bacterial furunculosis which arose as an isotopic response following a herpes zoster episode. The initial skin disease in most cases is herpes zoster and the isotopic response is a granulomatous reaction.  A 65-year-old female with a history of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and currently on chemotherapy regimen presented with a pustular skin rash on the posterior scalp extending to the post
