Root canal instrumentation efficacy of non-fused and fused primary molar roots: a micro-computed tomography study.

PURPOSE: Pulpectomy may be indicated in restorable primary teeth exhibiting irreversible pulpitis or pulpal necrosis. The purpose of this study was to compare the cleaning and shaping efficacy of NiTi systems (Reciproc® Blue and MTwo®) with manual stainless-steel instrumentation in primary molars using micro-CT analysis. METHODS: Fifty-seven maxillary second primary molars were scanned using micro-CT. Teeth with three divergent roots were divided randomly (n = 15) according to instrument type (K file, MTwo®, and Reciproc® Blue). Teeth with root fusion were instrumented manually as a separate

Occlusal characteristics and prevalence of associated dental anomalies in the primary dentition.

INTRODUCTION: Morphological variations in primary dentition are of great concern to a pediatric dentist as it may pose clinical problems like dental caries, delayed exfoliation and also anomalies in the permanent dentition, such as impaction of successors, supernumerary teeth, permanent double teeth or aplasia of teeth. The present study was conducted to investigate the presence of dental anomalies in the primary dentition of 1000 schoolchildren in the 3-5 year-old age group in Faridabad. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One-thousand schoolchildren were examined using Type III examination (WHO, 1997) f

[Anomalies of deciduous teeth and findings in permanent dentition].

Prevalence of anomalies of deciduous teeth has been analyzed in the general population of Zagreb preschool children. The sample comprised 2,987 children from 3 to 6 years of age (1,582 boys and 1,405 girls). Hypodontia was found in 0.47%, hyperdontia in 0.10%, and double teeth in 0.43% of total sample. Total prevalence of all anomalies in the sample was 1.0%. The sample for the analysis of permanent dentition has been enlarged with the clinical sample of children having the same anomalies and comprised 48 children. In all children with anomalies of primary teeth the orthopantomograms were take

Impacted Mandibular "Double" Third Molar: Fusion or Gemination? A Case Report.

Dental fusion is defined as an abnormality in tooth shape caused by developmental tooth disturbances that produce an intimate union of dental tissues. This case report discusses treatment of a mandibular impacted "double" third molar in a 21-year-old patient that could have been related to either gemination or tooth fusion. Radiological examination allowed for careful analysis of the tooth's shape and root development, relation to the inferior alveolar nerve, and 3-dimensional position. After evaluation of therapeutic options and risks, and with the patient's consent, the authors opted to extr

Double Teeth and Coexistent Anomalies: Examples From Continental Africa.

OBJECTIVES: Whether gemination or fusion, double teeth are rare worldwide, including Africa based on few published data. New cases from the continent are tallied, and anomalies potentially associated with double teeth are identified. These findings should interest a range of dental researchers. METHODS: The presence of double teeth was recorded in 97 modern and premodern North and sub-Saharan African samples (5631 inds.). They and coexistent anomalies are described relative to published examples. Prevalence was estimated as possible, using a Poisson model for 95% confidence intervals (CI). R

Hypodontia of the permanent dentition. Case reports.

Hypodontia has been observed as one of the most common human dental developmental anomalies. It may be defined as agenesis of one or more teeth. The prevalence in the permanent lower central and lateral incisor region is low, ranging from 0.23 percent to 0.08 percent, respectively. This is compared with an overall incidence of hypodontia of 3.49 percent. However, significant racial variation occurs. Treatment options generally available are: no treatment, closure of spaces orthodontically, or prosthetic replacement. Aetiology, associated anomalies, and factors involved in treatment choice are

Internal and external morphological analysis of fused-rooted mandibular second molars in the Chinese population: A micro-computed tomographic study.

This study investigated the root canal morphology of fused-rooted mandibular second molars based on the pulp chamber floor (PCF) and analysed the correlation between the external morphology of the radicular groove, and the internal morphology of the PCF and root canal configuration. A total of 291 fused-rooted teeth collected from the Chinese population were scanned using micro-computed tomography and a dental operating microscope was used for observing the PCFs. The classification of the PCF and root canal configuration were identified according to modified Min et al.'s and Gao et al.'s class

Conservative management of double teeth in molar teeth with pulp or periapical disease: a report of five cases and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Double teeth are usually the result of an abnormality in the developing tooth germ. Double teeth can occur in either the primary or permanent dentition, with the majority of cases concerning permanent teeth reported in the anterior teeth and less frequently in the molar teeth. CASE PRESENTATION: This report illustrates five cases of double teeth in molars with pulp and periapical disease, including one case of geminated teeth and four cases of fused teeth. Radiographic findings revealed the presence of extra teeth on the buccal aspect of the molar in five cases, with or without co

Bilateral fusion of permanent maxillary incisors.

Dental fusion is a rare developmental anomaly, which is included in the anomalies of tooth morphology or shape. Fusion can occur at the level of enamel or enamel and dentin, which results in the formation of a single tooth with enlarged clinical crown. Fusion is more common in deciduous dentition. Incisors are reported to be fused in primary and permanent dentition, but bilateral fusion is a rare occurrence. The prevalence of bilateral fusion in the permanent dentition is less frequent than unilateral fusion and is reported to be around 0.05%. The authors report a case of a 20-year-old male wi

Occurrence of talon cusp on a geminated maxillary central incisor: a case report.

This article reports an uncommon case of talon cusp on a geminated permanent maxillary central incisor, including details of the clinical and radiographic findings and treatment. A 28-year-old woman presented at the university dental clinic, and intraoral examination revealed a maxillary central incisor of abnormal size with a prominent accessory cusp on the lingual aspect. The case was diagnosed as talon cusp on a geminated tooth. Early diagnosis of this anomaly is important since it may cause clinical problems such as esthetic concerns, caries and tooth crowding. In the present case, these a

Eruption disturbances of maxillary permanent central incisors associated with anomalous adjacent permanent lateral incisors.

Several causes of eruption disturbances in upper permanent central incisors have been described. This report describes six cases in which the failure of maxillary permanent central incisors to erupt appears to be associated with developmental anomalies in the adjacent permanent lateral incisors. The root formation of the unerupted central incisors was delayed in comparison to the contralateral incisors as was the development of the adjacent lateral incisors. The shapes of the crowns were abnormal and in five cases out of the six described, the primary predecessors of the unerupted incisors wer

Endodontic Management of Dilacerated Maxillary Central Incisor fused to a Supernumerary Tooth using Cone Beam Computed Tomography: An Unusual Clinical Presentation.

AIM: The purpose of this report is to present a case of endodontic management of a dilacerated maxillary central incisor fused to supernumerary tooth unusually appearing as a labial tubercle using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) as a diagnostic aid. BACKGROUND: Anterior teeth are commonly encountered with aberrant anatomical variations in the crown, number of roots, and root canals. Fusion is an infrequent developmental abnormality in shape of the tooth caused by the union of two adjacent tooth germs. A complete knowledge of such complex anatomies is mandatory for a successful root canal

Case report: Evaluation of supernumerary teeth with computerized tomography.

Radiographs play an important role in assessment of both the location and the typing of supernumerary teeth. In general, periapical, occlusal, and/or panoramic radiographs are sufficient for providing the information required by the clinician. These modalities, however, do not provide detailed information concerning the 3-dimensional relationship between supernumerary or ectopically impacted teeth and adjacent structures. This case report discusses the value of computerized tomography (CT) for evaluation of the root relationships of supernumerary teeth located palatally to maxillary permanent
