UNLABELLED: Fusobacterium species are obligate anaerobic Gram-negative bacilli that are non-spore forming. The two most common species tied to human disease are F. nucleatum and F. necrophorum. They are commensal organisms in the oropharynx, gastrointestinal tract, and genital tract of humans, but can cause invasive infections especially in the head and neck such as periodontal disease and Lemierre's syndrome. F. necrophorum is an uncommon cause of infective endocarditis. We present a case of a previously healthy male who developed F. necrophorum endocarditis with multiple sites of pyogenic ab

This case report presents a unique case of pediatric Fusobacterium necrophorum osteomyelitis and septic arthritis, emphasizing the role of radiological imaging in diagnosis, treatment planning, and monitoring. Fusobacterium necrophorum, typically a member of the head and neck flora, is an uncommon causative agent of osteomyelitis, making this case particularly noteworthy. A 17-year-old male, with a history of recurrent otalgia, presented with worsening right otalgia, otorrhea for six days, headache, decreased range of motion of the neck to the right, and right hip pain. Radiological assessment

Background: Fusobacterium necrophorum is a rare pathogen, mostly affecting young adults, causing infections of the head and neck, typically described as the Lemierre's syndrome. Today this symptom complex has become increasingly rare and has almost turned to a 'forgotten disease'. Methods: We performed a retrospective, descriptive study to identify the clinical features of patients with positive culture of F. necrophorum. Additionally, the antibiotic susceptibility profile of the pathogens was analysed. Results: During a period of 22 years 36 patients with at least one isolate of F. necrophoru

The purpose of this investigation was to describe the clinical spectrum of invasive Fusobacterium necrophorum infections and Lemièrre's syndrome, to examine the role of underlying thrombophilia and concomitant mononucleosis in Lemièrre's syndrome, and to describe thromboembolic complications. Patients with invasive F. necrophorum infections were identified either prospectively or retrospectively through the regional database of clinical microbiology from 2000 to 2015. Patient records were reviewed and blood samples from patients with Lemièrre's syndrome were collected for Epstein-Barr virus (E

Mycoplasma hominis is a bacterium that colonizes the genital tract of some females and males, as well as their respiratory tracts. Although only two cases of deep neck infection have been reported, the associations between the onset and sexual intercourse have not been reported. A healthy 19-year-old female was diagnosed with a left peritonsillar abscess. The patient had sexual intercourse with a new partner, including oral sex, two days prior to symptom onset. It was not known whether the male partner had urethritis symptoms. M. hominis and Fusobacterium necrophorum were isolated from the abs

Fusobacterium necrophorum has recently been suggested to be associated with tonsillopharyngitis, peritonsillar abscess, and recurrent tonsillitis. Between the 2 subspecies of F. necrophorum, subsp. funduliforme is known to be a major human pathogen. To better understand the epidemiology of F. necrophorum subsp. funduliforme (FNSF), we studied the prevalence of FNSF in the tonsils of patients undergoing elective tonsillectomy (TE) for different indications. Adult patients who underwent elective TE from October 2014 to November 2015 were included. The tonsils were sent for aerobic and anaerobic

We have recently encountered two instances of septicemia due to Fusobacterium necrophorum in adolescents. The presence of severe exudative pharyngitis in both patients pointed to the upper respiratory tract as the probable portal of entry. In one case, metastatic infection was manifested by multiple septic pulmonary emboli with associated pleural effusions. In the other case, diffuse encephalopathy and septic arthritis of the left shoulder and hip occurred. Unilateral neck pain, persistent bacteremia, and prolonged fever despite appropriate antibiotics were consistent with the presence of sept

Acute mastoiditis is an infectious complication of acute otitis media, potentially leading to life-threatening extracranial and intracranial sequelae. In recent years, there has been a noticeable shift in the epidemiology of causative pathogens, with an increasing incidence of less common bacteria. This article presents the case of a 1.5-year-old child diagnosed with acute mastoiditis and additional complications, who failed to respond to empirical antibiotic therapy and had persistently negative cultures. Only through the use of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing was the causative organi

Lemierre syndrome is a rare and life-threatening condition that typically arises secondary to an oropharyngeal infection, progressing to thrombosis of the internal jugular vein and dissemination of septic emboli, most commonly to the lungs. Diagnosis is confirmed via contrast-enhanced cervicothoracic CT imaging, which identifies the presence of internal jugular vein thrombosis. Immediate treatment involves broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy, often utilizing a third-generation cephalosporin or a beta-lactam in combination with metronidazole. In select high-risk cases, anticoagulation may be warr

OBJECTIVE: Fusobacterium necrophorum can cause Lemierre's syndrome in humans and a range of illnesses, including foot rot and liver abscesses, in animals. The main virulence factor released by F. necrophorum is leukotoxin, which has been shown to have a strong correlation with the severity of the disease. Leukotoxin is commonly employed as the key antigen in the formulation of subunit vaccines. Therefore, identification of the B-cell epitope of F. necrophorum leukotoxin is necessary.
METHODS: In this research, we utilized lymphocyte hybridoma technology to develop a monoclonal antibody (mAb),

INTRODUCTION: Fusobacterium necrophorum is a rare but significant cause of septic arthritis, typically following oropharyngeal infections in adolescents. This anaerobic pathogen, commonly associated with Lemierre's syndrome, can lead to joint infections, posing risks for severe morbidity if diagnosis and treatment are delayed. Awareness and timely intervention are essential for preventing long-term joint damage.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 19-year-old woman who developed high fever and acute right hip pain one week after a sore throat. Imaging revealed septic arthritis, with F. necro

Pulmonary infection caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum, an obligate anaerobic gram-negative bacterium, most commonly occurs as a part of Lemierre's syndrome, i.e., pharyngotonsillitis complicated by septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein and secondary lung abscesses. A 51-year-old previously healthy man was admitted to our hospital with pleuritic right-sided chest pain. No sore throat, dysphagia, or neck pain was observed. Chest radiography and computed tomography (CT) revealed massive right pleural effusion and bilateral bronchopneumonia. Right thoracic drainage yielded purulen

Fusobacterium necrophorum plays a causal role in a rare and life-threatening condition, Lemierre's syndrome. It is characterized by infection involving the posterior compartment of the lateral pharyngeal space complicated by septic suppurative thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein with F. necrophorum bacteremia and metastatic abscesses, primarily to the lung and pulmonary septic emboli. Herein, we present a very rare case of oropharyngeal infection complicated by Lemierre's syndrome with characteristic septic emboli to the lungs presenting as sore throat in a previously healthy patient

Fusobacterium necrophorum (FN) is the predominant pathogen in peritonsillar abscesses, which is a relatively frequent complication of acute tonsillitis. The study aimed to explore if FN is a significant pathogen in acute tonsillitis, examine the prevalence of FN in acute tonsillitis patients, and describe the clinical and biochemical characteristics of FN-positive patients. A 6-month prospective study was conducted in a Danish general practice with eight physicians. One hundred acute tonsillitis patients and 100 healthy controls aged 15-40 years were included in the study. The prevalence of FN

Here, we report brain abscess due to Fusobacterium necrophorum (F. necrophorum) in a 78-year-old healthy man. He developed convulsion and did not have any signs of meningitis. Although the brain magnetic resonance imaging findings of the left occipital lobe were typical of a brain abscess, his cerebrospinal fluid examination revealed only slight pleocytosis and mild increase in protein levels. Thus, it was difficult to rule out the possibility of metastatic brain tumor; the patient's condition was provisionally diagnosed as symptomatic epilepsy secondary to brain abscess. His convulsion disapp

BACKGROUND: Human-to-human transmission of Fusobacterium necrophorum has not been described before.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 15-year-old girl with Lemierre Syndrome and possible nosocomial transmission of F. necrophorum to her treating physician in hospital.
CONCLUSION: Early diagnosis and treatment of anaerobic pharyngitis is critical to prevent Lemierre Syndrome. Respiratory precautions should be recommended to medical staff caring for patients with suspected Lemierre Syndrome to prevent nosocomial transmission.

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies implicate the presence of Fusobacterium necrophorum (FN) in recurrent tonsillitis (RT), acute tonsillitis and peritonsillar abscess. The objective of the present study was to determine whether FN plays a role in RT by comparing bacteriologic results from patients suffering from RT, tonsillar hypertrophy and halitosis or persistent sore throat syndrome (PSTS). We analyzed both tonsils to determine the degree of concordance.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective study was conducted in 80 patients aged 8-30 years who were undergoing elective tonsillectomy. The patients

A pyogenic liver abscess results from bacterial invasion of hepatic parenchyma via hematogenous, biliary, or direct routes. While Enterobacterales predominate, anaerobes such as Fusobacterium necrophorum are rare causes, often missed by conventional cultures due to prior antibiotics and fastidious growth. A 52-year-old man with diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia presented with two weeks history of fever and epigastric pain. Labs showed leukocytosis (WBC: 12.22 × 109/L, neutrophils: 8.91 × 109/L) and CRP of 289 mg/L. A CT scan revealed a ring-enhancing abscess in segment IV measuring 4.9

OBJECTIVE: To assess the apparent increase in the diagnosis of Lemierre syndrome (LS) and other Fusobacterium necrophorum infections at a large children's hospital. Infections with F necrophorum ranged from peritonsillar abscess to potentially fatal LS. LS is an oropharyngeal infection characterized by septic thrombophlebitis of head and neck veins, complicated by dissemination of septic emboli to pulmonary and systemic sites.
METHODS: Review of the medical and laboratory records was conducted of all patients who were seen at or admitted to the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin with the diagno
