Analysis of gait in patients with peripheral vestibular disorders.

Analysis of gait in patients with acute unilateral peripheral vestibular disorders was performed using foot switches and electromyography, with the aid of a telemetry system. Among the eight parameters set for the analysis, the occurrence rate of abnormality in the coefficient of variation (CV) was the highest (78%) for the time from heel strike to forefoot strike, followed by that of the location of maximum monophasic contraction of the gastrocnemius during stance, swing and stance. No significant laterality concerning the abnormally increased CV value in those parameters was found except for

Imaging gait analysis: An fMRI dual task study.

INTRODUCTION: In geriatric clinical diagnostics, gait analysis with cognitive-motor dual tasking is used to predict fall risk and cognitive decline. To date, the neural correlates of cognitive-motor dual tasking processes are not fully understood. To investigate these underlying neural mechanisms, we designed an fMRI paradigm to reproduce the gait analysis. METHODS: We tested the fMRI paradigm's feasibility in a substudy with fifteen young adults and assessed 31 healthy older adults in the main study. First, gait speed and variability were quantified using the GAITRite© electronic walkway. Th

Individual limb mechanical analysis of gait following stroke.

The step-to-step transition of walking requires significant mechanical and metabolic energy to redirect the center of mass. Inter-limb mechanical asymmetries during the step-to-step transition may increase overall energy demands and require compensation during single-support. The purpose of this study was to compare individual limb mechanical gait asymmetries during the step-to-step transitions, single-support and over a complete stride between two groups of individuals following stroke stratified by gait speed (≥0.8 m/s or <0.8 m/s). Twenty-six individuals with chronic stroke walked on an ins

Gait Speed Predicts Incident Disability: A Pooled Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Functional independence with aging is an important goal for individuals and society. Simple prognostic indicators can inform health promotion and care planning, but evidence is limited by heterogeneity in measures of function. METHODS: We performed a pooled analysis of data from seven studies of 27,220 community-dwelling older adults aged 65 or older with baseline gait speed, followed for disability and mortality. Outcomes were incident inability or dependence on another person in bathing or dressing; and difficulty walking ¼ - ½ mile or climbing 10 steps within 3 years. RESULTS:

Basic gait analysis based on continuous wave radar.

A gait analysis method based on continuous wave (CW) radar is proposed in this paper. Time-frequency analysis is used to analyze the radar micro-Doppler echo from walking humans, and the relationships between the time-frequency spectrogram and human biological gait are discussed. The methods for extracting the gait parameters from the spectrogram are studied in depth and experiments on more than twenty subjects have been performed to acquire the radar gait data. The gait parameters are calculated and compared. The gait difference between men and women are presented based on the experimental da

Therapeutic electrical stimulation for spasticity: quantitative gait analysis.

Improvement in motor function following electrical stimulation is related to strengthening of the stimulated spastic muscle and inhibition of the antagonist. A 26-year-old man with familial spastic paraparesis presented with gait dysfunction and bilateral lower limb spastic muscle tone. Clinically, muscle strength and sensation were normal. He was considered appropriate for a trial of therapeutic electrical stimulation following failed trials of physical therapy and baclofen. No other treatment was used concurrent with the electrical stimulation. Before treatment, quantitative gait analysis re

Evaluation of residual clubfoot deformities using gait analysis.

Gait analysis was used to evaluate 15 patients who had previously undergone clubfoot surgery. Because six patients had had bilateral surgery, 21 feet had undergone previous clubfoot surgery. Three of the operated feet had no residual deformity. In the remaining 18 feet, the reason for referral was intoeing in 13, calcaneovalgus in three, hindfoot varus in one, and supination/adduction in one. Clinical assessment and information from the gait analysis were used to establish a treatment plan. Satisfactory treatment outcome was achieved in 13 patients, one result was unsatisfactory, and one resul

Anterior versus posterior walkers: a gait analysis study.

Eight children, who needed walkers to ambulate and who were able to use either anterior or posterior walkers, were selected for a comparative study of both types of walker. Data for gait analysis, using high-speed cinematography, were collected to determine stride length, time in double support and velocity. Trunk, hip and knee angles were also measured during four phases of the gait cycle. The results demonstrated significant improvements in both postural alignment and gait characteristics with the posterior walker.

COMPREHENSIVE ANALYSIS OF MURINE GAIT DURING SKELETAL MATURATION.

Gait is a highly coordinated motor behavior that integrates musculoskeletal and neuromotor control. Analysis of gait parameters is widely used in murine studies as functional biomarkers of locomotor development and disease progression. However, there has yet to be a comprehensive characterization of how gait matures during the rapid growth preceding skeletal maturity, an age range often used in preclinical gait studies. We analyzed gait longitudinally in healthy C57BL/6J mice from 6 to 16 weeks of age, timed to the onsets of sexual and skeletal maturity, respectively. More than 30 gait paramet

Gait analysis for Parkinson's disease using multiscale entropy.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder marked by motor dysfunction and complex gait abnormalities. Traditional linear methods often fail to capture the intricate movement patterns in PD. This review highlights Multiscale Entropy (MSE) as a promising tool for assessing gait dynamics, offering deeper insights into movement variability across multiple temporal scales. MSE distinguishes healthy and pathological gait patterns, enhancing early diagnosis and disease monitoring. Advances in wearable sensors, artificial intelligence, and machine learning have boosted MSE's

Pipeline Validation for Rodent Gait Analysis Using deeplabcut.

This study aimed to integrate deeplabcut (dlc) with our Automatic Gait Analysis Through Hues and Areas (AGATHA) algorithm. Prior work with AGATHA shows that it can be used to understand spatiotemporal gait adaptations in multiple disease models. However, AGATHA cannot detect kinematic variables, like joint angles, which dlc was designed to measure. Here, these two approaches are integrated, and the gait variables that can be achieved with both methods are compared. To train dlc, hand digitization of high-speed videos was conducted to estimate the location of several key anatomical markers; the

Gait Analysis and Functional Outcome After Calcaneal Fracture.

BACKGROUND: Calcaneal fractures are associated with substantial morbidity and socioeconomic impact, frequently leading to limited functional outcome and high economic costs. The Oxford foot model (OFM) has been reported as a valid addition to the biomechanical examination of the foot. The aim of our study was to analyze the gait of patients after operative repair of a calcaneal fracture in relation to functional outcome and radiographic findings. METHODS: Thirteen patients with a calcaneal fracture underwent gait analysis with OFM at a minimum of six months after open surgery. Intersegmental

Gait analysis of patients who have Paget disease.

Eighteen patients who had Paget disease were evaluated in our gait-analysis laboratory. The results were compared with those of ten healthy age-matched control subjects in order to quantitate the biomechanical changes and to describe the specific patterns of walking that occur secondary to bowing of a lower extremity. Kinetic and kinematic data were acquired using infrared video cameras and force platforms; electromyographic data were obtained using surface electrodes. Velocity and cadence were decreased and stride time and double-limb support time were increased in the patients who had Paget

Identifying gait characteristics associated with freezing of gait in Parkinson's disease: An analysis of on and off medication states.

BACKGROUND & AIM: Freezing of gait (FOG) is common in Parkinson's disease (PD) and increases fall risk. While medication may reduce FOG, many with PD still show abnormalities in unfrozen gait. This study aimed to identify gait characteristics in both ON- and OFF-PD medication states that are associated with FOG severity and those that can detect FOG presence. METHODS: Data were collected from 36 people with PD (15 with FOG, 21 without FOG), including demographics (age, sex), PD severity (MDS-UPDRS part III), Levodopa-Equivalent Daily Dose (LEDD), observed FOG severity (FOG Score), and tempora

Instrumented Gait Analysis to Identify Persistent Deficits in Gait Stability in Adults With Chronic Vestibular Loss.

IMPORTANCE: Regaining the ability to walk safely is a high priority for adults with vestibular loss. Thus, practitioners need comprehensive knowledge of vestibulopathic gait to design, provide, and/or interpret outcomes of interventions. To date, few studies have characterized the effects of vestibular loss on gait. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the use of an instrumented 2-minute walk test in adults with vestibular loss, to further characterize vestibulopathic gait, and to assess whether those with chronic vestibular loss have enduring gait deficits. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cro

Gait disorders in the elderly and dual task gait analysis: a new approach for identifying motor phenotypes.

BACKGROUND: Gait disorders and gait analysis under single and dual-task conditions are topics of great interest, but very few studies have looked for the relevance of gait analysis under dual-task conditions in elderly people on the basis of a clinical approach. METHODS: An observational study including 103 patients (mean age 76.3 ± 7.2, women 56%) suffering from gait disorders or memory impairment was conducted. Gait analysis under dual-task conditions was carried out for all patients. Brain MRI was performed in the absence of contra-indications. Three main gait variables were measured: walk

Leg lengthening as part of gait improvement surgery in cerebral palsy: an evaluation using gait analysis.

Eleven children with hemiplegic or an asymmetric diplegic cerebral palsy who had a preoperative leg length discrepancy of more than 2.5 cm underwent gait improvement surgery which included leg length equalisation. Sagittal plane kinematics and kinetics before and about 3 years after surgery for the lengthened limb and contralateral limb were evaluated. Preoperatively the unaffected limb had excessive stance phase flexion at the hip and knee, and dorsal flexion at the ankle joint. These changes could be partially reversed to produce a kinematic gait pattern comparable to age matched normal cont
