Variability in neuron densities across the cortical sheet in primates.

The function of any area of the brain is a product of its unique population of neurons and nonneurons and their local and long-range connectional architecture. At the present time, we have inadequate data about numbers of neurons and the distribution patterns of neurons in the cortex and other parts of the brain. Numbers and densities of neurons and nonneurons provide the foundation for the assembly of a cortical and whole-brain neuronal network, yet the majority of studies reporting neuron densities for the primate cortex estimate the number of neurons in the cortex as a whole or in specific

Nests, tree holes, and the evolution of primate life histories.

In contrast to the majority of primates, many prosimians, some New World monkeys, and the great apes rest in tree holes or self-constructed nests during their inactive periods. The goal of this comparative study was to examine possible functions of this interspecific variation. Information on resting behavior, maternal behavior, and basic life-history traits was gleaned from the literature and mapped onto a phylogenetic tree of primates for various comparative tests. Parsimony-based reconstructions revealed that only the use of nests or tree holes as shelters for young infants can be unequivoc

Leishmania major: the suitability of East African nonhuman primates as animal models for cutaneous leishmaniasis.

The susceptibility of four species of East African nonhuman primates to experimental infection with Leishmania major was investigated. Four Syke's monkeys (Cercopithecus mitis), two vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops), two baboons (Papio cynocephalus), and two brown bushbabies (Galago garnettii) were each inoculated intradermally on the left eyelid, left ear, and nose with 0.1 ml of medium containing 1 x 10(7) promastigotes of a characterized L. major strain. All the nonhuman primates except the bushbabies developed erythema and conspicuous nodules on the eyelids and ears by 3 weeks PI. Th

NSD1 gene evolves under episodic selection within primates and mutations of specific exons in humans cause Sotos syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Modern human brains and skull shapes differ from other hominids. Brain growth disorders as micro- (ASPM, MCPH1) and macrocephaly (NFIX, GLI3) have been highlighted as relevant for the evolution in humans due to the impact in early brain development. Genes associated with macrocephaly have been reported to cause this change, for example NSD1 which causes Sotos syndrome. RESULTS: In this study we performed a systematic literature review, located the reported variants associated to Sotos syndrome along the gene domains, compared the sequences with close primates, calculated their sim

Cholinergic axonal dystrophy and mitochondrial pathology in prosimian primates.

Progressive cholinergic axonal dystrophy, cholinergic denervation, and generalized gliosis begin in the prosimian primate species Otolemur at 10% of maximum life span. In these same animals, extensive cerebral beta-amyloidosis follows relatively more abruptly at 50% of maximum life span. In contrast, even at maximum life span, the prosimian primate species Galago senegalensis Moholi, Microcebus murinus, and Eulemur fulvus collaris and insectivore species T. belangeri are either spared or much less affected. In this report, we further document this progressive cholinergic denervation in Otolemu

"Ontogenetic Scaling of the Primate Middle Ear".

The study of primate auditory morphology is a significant area of interest for comparative anatomists, given the phylogenetic relationships that link primate hearing and the morphology of these auditory structures. Extensive literature addresses the form-to-function relationship of the auditory system (outer, middle, and inner ear) in primates and, by extension, provides insight into the auditory system of extinct primates and even modern humans. We add to this literature by describing the ontogenetic trajectory of the middle ear cavity and ossicular chain (malleus, incus, and stapes) due to t

A primer of primate pathology: lesions and nonlesions.

Nonhuman primates are important laboratory animals for biomedical, pharmacology, and toxicology research. To effectively use primates as models, their gross and histologic anatomy, physiology and natural history, as well as common health problems and the source from which the primate is obtained, must be known and understood by pathologists involved in study design and/or interpretation. The first very important lesson in the "primer" is: there is no such thing as a generic monkey. Brand names (ie, species and subspecies) are important. Several taxonomic groups of primates are used in research

A fossil galagid (Primates: Galagidae) from the Pliocene site of Woranso-Mille, Ethiopia.

Two new fossil galagid specimens from the Pliocene sediments of Woranso-Mille in Ethiopia provide important evidence for documenting the taxonomic diversity and evolutionary history of Galagidae. The partial cranium (MKM-VP-1/140) and mandibular fragment (MKM-VP-1/414) from the Makah Mera (MKM) collecting locality are the first fossil galagids described from the Afar region of Ethiopia. Importantly, MKM-VP-1/140 represents the most complete galagid specimen known from the Plio-Pleistocene of Africa. Based on their dental morphology and overall size, the two specimens can be assigned to a singl

Calcium feedback and sensitivity regulation in primate rods.

Membrane current was recorded from a single primate rod with a suction pipette while the cell was bath perfused with solutions maintained at a temperature of approximately 38 degrees C. A transient inward current was observed at the onset of bright illumination after briefly exposing the outer segment in darkness to Ringer's (Locke) solution containing 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX), an inhibitor of cGMP phosphodiesterase. After briefly removing external Na+ from around the outer segment in darkness, a similar current was observed upon Na+ restoration in bright light. By analogy to amphibi

The morphology of the diencephalon in the Prosimii. II. The Lemuroidea and Lorisoidea. Part I. Thalamus and metathalamus.

This study (Part I) covers the comparative structure of the thalamus and metathalamus in the prosimian superfamilies, Lorisoidea and Lemuroidea. Several lemuroid specimens, namely Lemus, Cheirogaleus, Microcebus, Avahi and Daubentonia, and lorisoid specimens such as Galago, Perodicticus and Loris have been used in this extensive study. The anterior nuclear group does not show much difference among these species, although attention is focussed on the differentiation of the principal anterior nucleus into anteromedial and anteroventral parts; the latter increases in structural complexity. The an

Studies on the evolution of multiple somatosensory representations in primates: the organization of anterior parietal cortex in the New World Callitrichid, Saguinus.

Because members of the New World family, Callithricidae, are generally regarded as the most primitive of monkeys, we studied the organization of somatosensory cortex in the tamarin (Saguinus) in hopes of better understanding differences in the organization of anterior parietal cortex in primates and how these differences relate to phylogeny. In most prosimian primates only one complete representation of cutaneous receptors has been found in the region of primary cortex, S-I, while in all Old and New World monkeys studied to date, two cutaneous representations exist in distinct architectonic fi
