Quantification of potential exposure of gray partridge (Perdix perdix) to pesticide active substances in farmlands.

Estimating exposure of wild birds to plant protection products is of key importance in the risk assessment process evaluating their harmful potential. In this paper, we propose an ecologically-relevant methodology to estimate potential exposure to active substances (ASs) of a farmland focal bird, the gray partridge Perdix perdix. It is based on bird habitat use of fields at the time of pesticide applications. It accounts for spatio-temporal heterogeneity at population and landscape scales. We identify and quantify the potential exposure to 179 ASs of 140 clutches during pre-laying, laying, and

A review of the importance of cryptosporidiosis in farm animals.

Cryptosporidium species are coccidian parasites with a large capacity to reproduce and to disseminate. Several species are known to infect farm animals, although the economic importance of cryptosporidiosis is highly host species dependent. This paper reviews the impact of cryptosporidial infections in livestock and poultry. For different farm animals, the Cryptosporidium spp. that occur, as well as their clinical and pathological features, and their interactions with other pathogens, are described. In addition, data concerning the prevalence, the transmission and the epidemiology of the disea

This report documents the first identification of Ribeiroia ondatrae in a guinea fowl (Numida meleagris), from Sacramento, California, in 2023. This finding expands the known host range of this trematode. The affected bird presented with progressive anorexia, diarrhea, and oronasal mucoid discharge, and was humanely euthanized for postmortem examination. Gross lesions included proventriculitis with mucus accumulation and obstruction of the ventriculus by koilin fronds. Microscopically, numerous flukes invaded the mucosal glands and submucosal stroma, surrounded by cellular infiltration, bacter

Glomerular lipidosis accompanied by renal tubular oxalosis in wild and laboratory-reared Japanese rock ptarmigans (Lagopus mutus japonicus).

Glomerular lipidosis is a disease characterized by lipid accumulation in mesangial cells but that has not been fully investigated in avian species. We examined four wild and two laboratory-reared Japanese rock ptarmigans (Lagopus mutus japonicus)--an endangered avian species--presenting vacuolar deposits in the glomeruli. All cases had vacuolar deposits in the glomeruli. In the wild cases, fewer than 30% of all glomeruli were affected, compared with more than 90% in the laboratory-reared cases. In the wild cases, most deposits were mild and restricted to the mesangial areas of glomeruli. In th

[Cuclotogaster heterographus (Mallophaga: Lipeuridae) infestation on ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) in Konya].

The aim of this study was to detect ectoparasites on ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) in Konya. On the Research and Experimental Farm of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Selcuk University, 55 ring-necked pheasants were observed to be infested with ectoparasites. Because of this, the pheasants were put into a large cartoon-box, the bottom of which was covered with a white paper and were treated with propoxur for a few minutes. The ectoparasites that had fallen on the paper were transferred to a tube containing 70% ethyl alcohol. After being cleared in lactophenol for a few days,

Comparison of pesticide contamination between captive-reared and wild grey partridges: insights into environmental exposure disparities.

Pesticide contamination is often cited as a key factor in the global decline of farmland birds. However, the majority of studies on pesticide exposure in non-target fauna are not representative of what happens in nature because they are limited to artificial conditions. The aim of this study was to define and compare, for the first time, pesticide contamination in grey partridges (Perdix perdix) from two different contexts, i.e., captivity vs. the wild. Blood samples taken from 35 captive and 54 wild partridges in 2021-2022 were analysed for 94 pesticides most commonly used in French agricultu

Host-selection patterns of Culex tarsalis (Diptera: Culicidae) determine the spatial heterogeneity of West Nile virus enzootic activity in northern California.

The spatial heterogeneity of West Nile virus (WNV) activity in Sutter County, CA, as measured by mosquito infection rates, was associated with spatial variation in the prevalence of Culex blood feeding on competent passeriform hosts. Overall, 42 vertebrate host species (31 avian, 11 mammal) were identified from 601 blood-fed Culex tarsalis Coquillett and 151 blood-fed Culex pipiens L. complex females using sequences of the cytochrome c oxidase I gene and the Barcode of Life Data Systems database. WNV infection rates were low at sites where the primary vector, Cx. tarsalis, fed frequently on do

West Nile virus-associated mortality events in domestic Chukar partridges (Alectoris chukar) and domestic Impeyan pheasants (Lophophorus impeyanus).

West Nile virus (WNV) infection was diagnosed in captive juvenile chukars (Alectoris chukar), and captive juvenile Impeyan pheasants (Lophophorus impeyanus) on the basis of necropsy, histopathology, polymerase chain reaction, and immunohistochemistry. The chukars were kept in a game bird farm that experienced two outbreaks with approximately 25% mortality in hundreds of chukars between September and October 2002 and during the same months in 2003. The submitted pheasants were part of a group of 15 juvenile Impeyan pheasants that all died within approximately 2 wk at the end of August 2002. The

First Report of Emerging Chaphamaparvovirus Causing Necrotizing Hepatitis in Pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) in the United States.

A mortality of young pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) with necrotizing hepatitis was reported on a farm in California. Ultrastructurally, nonenveloped, icosahedral, 24 nm (SD = 2 nm) viral particles were detected in the liver. Whole-genome sequencing detected a chaphamaparvovirus from the liver sharing 94.4% nucleotide identity with Phasianus chaphamaparvovirus-1 (PhChPV-1). This is the first report of PhChPV-1 causing necrotizing hepatitis in pheasants in the United States. Since these pheasants are used for hunting activities, the spreading of PhChPV-1 into the wild should be taken into consi

Courtship display behavior influences tail myology in Centrocercus minimus (Gunnison sage-grouse).

A variety of bird species engage in complicated, elaborate courtship displays to impress potential mates. Such displays include wing flaring, aerial acrobatics, choreographed dances, and tail fanning. Though these behaviors are often well studied, the underlying musculature facilitating them is poorly understood. Exemplars of unique avian courtship behaviors include species of the North American sage-grouse (Centrocercus). Each spring, males gather in leks where they perform courtship displays which incorporate species-specific sound production, nape feather movement, and importantly, the rais
