Medication adherence is a predictor of mortality and morbidity for people living with HIV, with many youth living with HIV (YLWH) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) having low adherence rates. This paper details use of gamification principles to develop a medication adherence app (PEERNaija) to support YLWH in Nigeria. The employed gamification features were informed by theory-driven approaches, other similar applications, broad-based focus group discussions, wireframe-based feedback, and revisions after 6-months of end-user testing, feedback and application use. Key gamification feat

BACKGROUND: Only about 9% of individuals with intellectual disabilities reach the government's physical activity (PA) recommendations. Combining gamification and technology seems particularly promising in overcoming personal and environmental barriers to PA participation.
METHOD: Eighteen adults with varying levels of intellectual disabilities completed a pilot study to assess the initial effects of a cycling gamification intervention on levels of PA, fitness, psychosocial outcomes, and challenging behaviours. The study comprised three designs: pre-post single group, AB single-case, and quali

Urogenital emergencies demand immediate attention within the field of emergency medicine, encompassing a range of critical conditions from ectopic pregnancies to kidney stones. Timely diagnosis and treatment are vital to prevent potential mortality and morbidity. However, due to the sensitive nature of these disorders and the cultural taboos surrounding them, accessing prompt medical care can be challenging. To bridge this gap, innovative gamification-based learning techniques, such as the Learning Urogenital Diseases in Oddity (LUDO), have been introduced for emergency medicine residents (Cho

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the world's deadliest infectious diseases and continues to be hindered by poor public awareness, stigma, and misinformation, all of which can contribute to delayed diagnosis, ongoing transmission, and poor treatment adherence. In low-incidence settings, limited public attention to TB may further reduce basic knowledge and represent an additional barrier to control efforts. We evaluated the feasibility and educational potential of 'Tuberculosis Alert', the first board game specifically designed around TB, as a gamification tool to support TB awarenes

Gamification has rapidly proliferated across medical education, promising enhanced engagement, improved knowledge retention, and more motivated learners. Yet the uncritical embrace of game mechanics in contexts defined by human suffering raises profound questions that the field has largely failed to confront. This critical essay first proposes a typology distinguishing gamification, serious games, and game-based learning to identify which specific design elements pose the greatest ethical risks in which learning contexts. It then examines the philosophical and empirical tensions inherent in tr
