Although the thalamus is an important module in "pain networks," there are few studies of the effect of experimental pain upon thalamic oscillations. We have now examined the hypothesis that, during a series of painful cutaneous laser stimuli, thalamic signals will show stimulus-related gamma-band spectral activity, which is modulated by attention to vs. distraction from the painful stimulus. When the series of laser stimuli was presented, attention was focused by counting the laser stimuli (count laser task), while distraction was produced by counting backward (count back plus laser task). We

BACKGROUND: In Parkinson's disease, the emergence of motor dysfunction is thought to be related to an imbalance between "antikinetic" and "prokinetic" patterns of oscillatory activity in the motor network. Invasive recordings from the basal ganglia and cortex in surgical patients have suggested that levodopa and therapeutic deep brain stimulation can suppress antikinetic beta band (13-30 Hz) rhythms while promoting prokinetic gamma band (60-90 Hz) rhythms. Surgical ablation of the globus pallidus internus is one of the oldest effective therapies for Parkinson's disease and produces remarkably

Gamma wave entrainment is a promising approach for improving cognitive function, particularly in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease. However, for everyday treatment, a light source system that maintains visibility while delivering effective stimulation is essential for patient comfort and practicality. To address this need, we developed organic light-emitting diode (OLED) glasses with optimized large-area transparent OLEDs for gamma wave entrainment. The optimization involved all layers of the device, including encapsulation, to achieve high luminous transmittance (75%), uniformity (over

The cellular and network mechanisms of the transition of brief interictal discharges to prolonged seizures are a crucial issue in epilepsy. Here we used hippocampal slices exposed to ACSF containing 0 Mg(2+) to explore mechanisms for the transition to prolonged (3-42 sec) seizure-like ("ictal") discharges. Epileptiform activity, evoked by Shaffer collateral stimulation, triggered prolonged bursts in CA1, in 50-60% of slices, from both adult and young (postnatal day 13-21) rats. In these cases the first component of the CA1 epileptiform burst was followed by a train of population spikes at freq

Neural oscillations are prominent features of brain activity, characterized by frequency-specific power changes in electroencephalograms (EEG) and local field potentials (LFP). These oscillations also appear as rhythmic coherence across brain regions. While the identification of oscillations has primarily relied on EEG and LFP, they are also present in neuronal spiking. However, several questions remain unanswered: How do spiking oscillations relate to field potential oscillations? How are spiking oscillations correlated across brain regions? And how are they connected to other physiological a

The Period2 gene plays a key role in controlling circadian rhythm in mice. We report here that mice deficient in the mPer2 gene are cancer prone. After gamma radiation, these mice show a marked increase in tumor development and reduced apoptosis in thymocytes. The core circadian genes are induced by gamma radiation in wild-type mice but not in mPer2 mutant mice. Temporal expression of genes involved in cell cycle regulation and tumor suppression, such as Cyclin D1, Cyclin A, Mdm-2, and Gadd45alpha, is deregulated in mPer2 mutant mice. In particular, the transcription of c-myc is controlled dir

INTRODUCTION: Electroencephalographic (EEG) abnormalities are seen in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) with characteristic features of cognitive impairment. The most common findings of EEG features in AD and MCI patients are increased relative power of slow oscillations (delta and theta rhythms) and decreased relative power of fast oscillations (alpha, beta and gamma rhythms). However, impairments in cognitive processes in AD and MCI are not sufficiently reflected by brain oscillatory activity in a particular frequency band. MCI patients are at high ri

The dentate gyrus (DG) is part of the hippocampal formation and is essential for important cognitive processes such as navigation and memory. The oscillatory activity of the DG network is believed to play a critical role in cognition. DG circuits generate theta, beta, and gamma rhythms, which participate in the specific information processing performed by DG neurons. In the temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), cognitive abilities are impaired, which may be due to drastic alterations in the DG structure and network activity during epileptogenesis. The theta rhythm and theta coherence are especially vu

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The alteration of circadian rhythms in the postoperative period has been demonstrated to influence the outcomes. With this narrative review we would revise how anesthesia, surgery and intensive care can interfere with the circadian clock, how this could impact on the postsurgical period and how to limit the disruption of the internal clock.
RECENT FINDINGS: Anesthesia affects the clock in relation to the day-time administration and the type of anesthetics, N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonists or gamma-aminobutyric acid receptors agonists. Surgery causes stress and trau

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate alterations of brain connectivity using multivariate electroencephalographic data to provide new insights of the brain connectivity dynamics of dystonia.
APPROACH: We recorded electroencephalography (EEG) of patients with right upper limb idiopathic focal dystonia and paired controls during resting state, writing-from-memory, and finger-tapping tasks. We applied power spectrum analyses considering the mu, beta and gamma rhythms of the motor cortex and analyzed brain connectivity networks and microstates (MS).
MAIN RESULTS: The power spectra results s

Pain management strategies have progressed beyond traditional pharmacologic and physical interventions, integrating advanced neuromodulation techniques such as deep brain stimulation, peripheral nerve stimulation, and high-frequency spinal cord stimulation (hSCS). Despite its clinical efficacy, the supraspinal mechanisms underlying hSCS remain poorly understood. Prior work in sheep demonstrated that hSCS modulates gamma (γ) band (70-150 Hz) activity in the primary somatosensory and association cortices, implicating cortical involvement in pain modulation. Given the interaction between low- and

Recent studies have linked non-invasive transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS) with altered neural processing near the site of stimulation and across a distributed network of brain regions, with some evidence for a possible therapeutic role. However, negative results also exist and the potential impacts on motor-related neural oscillations have rarely been studied. Herein, we applied high-definition tDCS to the left primary motor cortex of 62 healthy adults in three sessions (anodal, cathodal and sham). Participants then performed a motor task with two conditions (i.e. cognitive interf

OBJECTIVES: The neuromodulatory effects of transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) on electroencephalogram (EEG) dynamics are quite heterogenous. The primary objective of the study is to comprehensively characterize the effects of two tACS protocols on resting-state EEG.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 36 healthy participants were recruited and were randomized into three groups. Two groups received either personalized theta (4-8 Hz) or gamma (40 Hz) stimulation bilaterally in the frontal regions for 20 minutes (4 minutes ON, 1 minute OFF, four cycles). The third group performed

Individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) exhibit altered reward processing, reflected by a decreased amplitude of an event-related potential (ERP) marker called reward positivity (RewP). Most studies have used RewP to investigate reward behavior due to the high temporal resolution of EEG and its high sensitivity. However, traditional single-electrode ERP analyses often overlook the intricate dynamics of non-phase-locked oscillatory activity and the complex interactions within these neural oscillatory patterns. Studying oscillatory activity is crucial as it provides mechanistic insights into t

Cognitive control often requires suppression of prepotent stimulus-driven responses in favor of less potent alternatives. Suppression of prepotent saccades has been shown to require proactive inhibition in the frontoparietal saccade network. Electrophysiological evidence in macaque monkeys has revealed neural correlates of such inhibition in this network; however, the interlaminar instantiation of inhibitory processes remains poorly understood because these areas lie deep within sulci in macaques, rendering them inaccessible to laminar recordings. Here, we addressed this gap by exploiting the

Depression is a highly prevalent mental disorder that impacts an individual's functioning, societal productivity, and quality of life. It is associated with disrupted neural activity (e.g., balance of excitation-inhibition) across networks implicated in emotional processing, such as between prefrontal and limbic regions. Gamma and beta activity measured with electroencephalography (EEG) differ between healthy individuals and those with depression, and predict treatment outcomes following pharmacological intervention. However, to date research has focussed on binary comparisons between individu

Neurophysiological biomarkers are needed to characterize the condition of patients with spinal cord injury (SCI), for which effective symptomatic biomarkers are lacking. We recorded the resting-state magnetoencephalography data of 22 patients with SCI and 29 healthy controls. Power spectral density and phase-amplitude coupling (PAC) were assessed for six frequency bands using source-reconstructed cortical currents. Compared with controls, SCI patients exhibited significantly reduced gamma band power and increased beta-gamma PAC in the frontal cortex, including the primary motor area (q < 0.05,

OBJECTIVE: How neuronal oscillatory activity in Parkinson's disease (PD) is organized and coordinated is not yet known. We hypothesized that cross-frequency phase synchrony (CFS) in the beta and gamma frequencies measured over the motor cortex [using electroencephalography (EEG)] at rest would be elevated in people with PD compared with healthy controls. ON- versus OFF-medication tests in the PD group were further compared with the hypothesis that elevated CFS would be found in the OFF-medication state.
METHODS: CFS in beta and gamma frequencies was estimated in EEG recordings from 15 people

The aim of this study was to investigate whether cognitive processing for defining step precision during walking could induce changes in electrocortical activity. Ten healthy adults (21-36 years) were asked to walk overground in three different conditions: (1) normal walking in a straight path (NW); (2) walking in a pre-defined pathway forcing variation in step width and length by stepping on green marks on the floor (only one color: W1C), and (3) walking in the same pre-defined W1C pathway while evaluating different combinations among the colors green, yellow and red, in which only one color

It is hypothesized that being mindfully aware is a spontaneous state of being. It is imbued with joy, peace and happiness. Such a state is periodically revealed during restful attentiveness or presence. It is also associated with spontaneous brain alpha activity of 8-13 Hz. In deep nonrapid eye movement sleep, there is synchronous delta activity at a coherent frequency of 0.1 Hz. Both of these brainwave ground states are spontaneous, calm and effortless. When any physical or mental effort is made, the alpha rhythm is desynchronized, and it is superposed by faster brain waves of beta (13-30 Hz)
