Atrial fibrillation increases sympathetic and parasympathetic neurons in the intrinsic cardiac nervous system.

BACKGROUND: Chronic atrial fibrillation (AF) leads to heterogeneous autonomic nerve innervation termed neural remodeling. The quantitative changes in neural density as a function of autonomic remodeling and its association with sustained AF has not been previously determined. METHOD AND RESULTS: Seven dogs (paced group) were chronically paced with electrodes sutured to the epicardium of left atrial appendages. Seven dogs (control animals) were not paced. All paced dogs developed sustained AF by 5 weeks of pacing. The fat pads on the atrial epicardium containing ganglionated plexuses (GP) were

Innervation of the rat pineal gland by nerve fibres originating in the sphenopalatine, otic and trigeminal ganglia. A retrograde in vivo neuronal tracing study.

The innervation of the rat pineal gland from the sphenopalatine, otic, superior cervical and trigeminal ganglia was investigated in animals by use of in vivo retrograde tracings. A solution of 2% Fluorogold was iontophoretically injected into the superficial pineal gland in a series of Wistar rats. After a survival time of 4-10 days, the animals were fixed by perfusion and the brains, sphenopalatine, otic, superior cervical and trigeminal ganglia were investigated with a fluorescence microscope. Many retrogradely labelled perikarya were found in the superior cervical ganglia, but a smaller num

Defects in sensory and autonomic ganglia and absence of locus coeruleus in mice deficient for the homeobox gene Phox2a.

Phox2a is a vertebrate homeodomain protein expressed in subsets of differentiating neurons. Here, we show that it is essential for proper development of the locus coeruleus, a subset of sympathetic and parasympathetic ganglia and the VIIth, IXth, and Xth cranial sensory ganglia. In the sensory ganglia, we have identified two differentiation blocks in Phox2a-/- mice. First, the transient expression of dopamine-beta-hydroxylase in neuroblasts is abolished, providing evidence that Phox2a controls noradrenergic traits in vivo. Second, the expression of the GDNF receptor subunit Ret is dramatically

Neuromodulation for the Sphenopalatine Ganglion-a Narrative Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To provide an integrated overview of the current state of knowledge of neuromodulation for the sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG) by reviewing relevant and significant literature. RECENT FINDINGS: There are several case reports and clinical trials evaluating neuromodulation for the SPG. We identified two blinded, randomized clinical trials for patients with chronic cluster headache. The randomized trials and additional studies demonstrated the long-term safety, efficacy, and cost-effectiveness of neuromodulation for the SPG. Recent studies in Europe and the USA suggest that SPG

Morphometric study of the ciliary ganglion and its pertinent intraorbital procedure.

BACKGROUND: Ciliary ganglion (CG) can be easily injured without notice in many intraorbital procedures. Surgical procedures approaching the lateral side of the orbit are at risk of CG injury which results in transient mydriasis and tonic pupil. This study aims to focus on the morphometric study of the CG which is pertinent to intraoperative procedure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty embalmed cadaveric globes were dissected to observe the location, shape and size of CG, characteristics and number of roots reaching CG, number of short ciliary nerve in the orbit. Distances from CG to posterior end

The pterygopalatine ganglion and its role in various pain syndromes: from anatomy to clinical practice.

The postsynaptic fibers of the pterygopalatine or sphenopalatine ganglion (PPG or SPG) supply the lacrimal and nasal glands. The PPG appears to play an important role in various pain syndromes including headaches, trigeminal and sphenopalatine neuralgia, atypical facial pain, muscle pain, vasomotor rhinitis, eye disorders, and herpes infection. Clinical trials have shown that these pain disorders can be managed effectively with sphenopalatine ganglion blockade (SPGB). In addition, regional anesthesia of the distribution area of the SPG sensory fibers for nasal and dental surgery can be provide

Remodelling of connections in pelvic ganglia after hypogastric nerve crush.

Pelvic ganglia innervate the urogenital organs and contain both sympathetic and parasympathetic neurons. Previous studies have shown that within days of cutting either the lumbar or sacral preganglionic axons that innervate pelvic ganglia, many axon collaterals grow and appear to form specific connections with denervated pelvic neurons. Here we have examined the longer term consequences of partial deafferentation by studying pelvic ganglia up to 7 weeks after hypogastric nerve (HGN) crush, a lesion which also allows faster regeneration of spinal axons. Noradrenergic neurons were denervated by

Nitric oxide synthase in the autonomic and sensory ganglia innervating the submandibular salivary gland.

This article reviews the neuroanatomical studies on the distribution of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) in neurons and nerve fibers innervating the submandibular gland. Specificity of NADPH-diaphorase activity as a histochemical marker of neuronal NOS is discussed in light of corresponding NOS immunoreactivity. Anatomical data suggest that nitric oxide may affect neural regulation of the submandibular gland through both sympathetic, parasympathetic and sensory divisions of the autonomic nervous system. NOS-containing nerve terminals in the gland parenchyme are mainly vascular and either parasympat

Premature ventricular contractions activate vagal afferents and alter autonomic tone: implications for premature ventricular contraction-induced cardiomyopathy.

Mechanisms behind development of premature ventricular contraction (PVC)-induced cardiomyopathy remain unclear. PVCs may adversely modulate the autonomic nervous system to promote development of heart failure. Afferent neurons in the inferior vagal (nodose) ganglia transduce cardiac activity and modulate parasympathetic output. Effects of PVCs on cardiac parasympathetic efferent and vagal afferent neurotransmission are unknown. The purpose of this study was to evaluate effects of PVCs on vagal afferent neurotransmission and compare these effects with a known powerful autonomic modulator, myoca

Haploinsufficiency for Phox2b in mice causes dilated pupils and atrophy of the ciliary ganglion: mechanistic insights into human congenital central hypoventilation syndrome.

Dilp1 is a semi-dominant mouse mutation that causes dilated pupils when heterozygous and is lethal when homozygous. We report here that it is caused by a point mutation that introduces a stop codon close to the start of the coding sequence of the paired-like homeobox transcription factor Phox2b. Mice carrying a targeted allele of Phox2b also have dilated pupils and the two alleles do not complement. Phox2b is necessary for the development of the autonomic nervous system and when absent one of the consequences is that all parasympathetic ganglia fail to form. Constriction of the pupil is a para

Lacrimal preganglionic neurons form a subdivision of the superior salivatory nucleus of rat: transneuronal labelling by pseudorabies virus.

Transneuronal viral tracing was applied to localize preganglionic parasympathetic neurons in the brainstem which innervate the extraorbital lacrimal gland in the rat. The Bartha strain of pseudorabies virus was injected into the lacrimal gland, and after different survival times, the superior cervical and Gasserian ganglia, the upper thoracic spinal cords and the brainstems were immunostained by antiviral antiserum. Virus-labelled neurons appeared in the ganglia and in the ventrolateral part of the ipsilateral brainstem at the pontomedullary junction 45 h after inoculation. The virus-labelled

Ontogeny of canine intrathoracic cardiac nervous system.

The functional cardiac innervation of 61 puppies from nine different litters (2-8 littermates), ranging in age from 1 day to 7 wk, was investigated. The efferent sympathetic nervous system exerted minimal effects on the heart of 1-day-old puppies, gradually influencing the heart more thereafter such that by 7 wk of life it was functionally mature. In contrast, efferent parasympathetic cardiac innervation was well developed at birth, maturing thereafter such that by 4-7 wk of age its capacity to modulate the heart was similar to that found in adults. The right- and left-sided efferent sympathet

Origins of nitric oxide synthase-containing nerve fibers in the rat basilar artery with reference to the fine structure of the nerve fibers.

The origins of nitric oxide synthase (NOS)-containing nerve fibers in the rat basilar artery were studied by a combination of Fluoro-Gold retrograde tracing and immunohistochemistry. After application of Fluoro-Gold onto the middle part of the basilar artery, the dye accumulated in the sphenopalatine, otic, trigeminal, superior cervical, nodose ganglia and in the spinal ganglia at level C2 and C3. Nerve cells with NOS-like immunoreactivity were detected in the above ganglia, except for the superior cervical ganglion. Neurons that showed both NOS-like immunoreactivity and Fluoro-Gold fluorescen

Cutaneous paraganglioma of the vertex in a child.

Paraganglioma is a neuroendocrine neoplasm that may develop at various body sites, including the head, neck, thorax, and abdomen. Approximately 85% of paragangliomas develop on the abdomen, 12% develop on the chest, and only 3% develop on the head and neck. These tumors are found in locations that parallel the sympathetic chain ganglion in the thoracolumbar regions and parasympathetic nervous system in craniosacral regions, and all head and neck paragangliomas arise from the parasympathetic nervous system. Although the skin has a rich neural network, it is devoid of ganglia. There has been onl

Calretinin-immunoreactive nerves in the uterus, pelvic autonomic ganglia, lumbosacral dorsal root ganglia and lumbosacral spinal cord.

Nerves containing the calcium-binding protein calretinin have been reported in several organs but not in female reproductive organs and associated ganglia. This study was undertaken to determine if nerves associated with the uterus contain calretinin and the source(s) of calretinin-synthesizing nerves in the rat (are they sensory, efferent, or both?). Calretinin-immunoreactive nerves were present in the uterine horns and cervix where they were associated with arteries, uterine smooth muscle, glands, and the epithelium. Calretinin-immunoreactive terminals were apposed to neurons in the paracerv

[Alertness is its own reward: adult type Hirschprung's disease--clinical description of first two cases in Israel].

Hirschprung disease is well known. The basic pathogenesis is lack of parasympathetic ganglia in the large bowel wall, part of it, or all of it. The absence of these ganglia paralyzes the involved segment leading to obstruction. Almost all babies are diagnosed and operated upon in their first year. Few rare cases manage to grow and reach maturity without diagnosis. These patients are characterized by severe constipation and grade III-IV hemorrhoids. This is adult type Hirschprung's disease. Two first cases in Israel were diagnosed, patients were operated upon, and recovered. Adult type Hirschpr

The effects of muscarine and adrenaline on patch-clamped frog cardiac parasympathetic neurones.

1. The whole-cell patch-clamp technique was used to record membrane currents from neurones which were acutely dissociated from the intra-atrial parasympathetic ganglia of Rana pipiens. The effects of muscarine and adrenaline were observed at a holding potential of -30 mV. Extracellular potassium concentration ([K+]o) was 2, 6 or 20 mM. 2. Muscarine (10 microM) produced inward current in thirteen cells, outward current in eighteen cells and seven cells were unaffected. Inward currents were observed in six out of ten neurones in which the intracellular solution contained adenosine triphosphate (

[Organogenesis of cranial ganglia in the chick embryo: a comparison of the development of blood vessels and neurocytodifferentiation].

Neurohistogenetic and vasculogenetic processes have been analytically compared in several cranial ganglia, ciliary (III nerve), semilunar (V nerve), vestibulocochlear (VIII nerve), petrosal (IX nerve) and nodose (X nerve), of chicken embryos from the 3rd to the 12th incubation day. The results indicate that during the organogenesis of these ganglia the formation of the first intrinsic vessels and the successive development of vascular networks follow the beginning and, respectively, the main steps of the neuroblast morphological maturation. The differences noticed by the Authors as concerns th
