Cytochrome b558 and hydrogen peroxide production in small intensely fluorescent cells of sympathetic ganglia.

Small intensely fluorescent (SIF) cells are paraganglionic cells derived from sympathicoblasts which may serve as interneurons, endo-/paracrine cells or arterial chemoreceptors within sympathetic ganglia. Like paraganglionic cells of other locations, e.g., carotid body glomus cells, they are responsive to hypoxia. Recent studies on glomus cells and other hypoxia-sensing cells suggested the involvement of a b558-type cytochrome and intracellular generation of H2O2 in the process of oxygen sensing. In the present study, we demonstrate the occurrence of the small subunit of cytochrome b558, p22ph

Anatomical variation of sympathetic ganglia in R4+R5 sympathicotomy for primary palmar axillary hyperhidrosis.

BACKGROUND: R4+R5 sympathicotomy is one of the standard surgical treatments for primary palmar axillary hyperhidrosis (PAH), but the reported outcomes vary. Anatomical variation of sympathetic ganglia is hypothesized to be a cause for this phenomenon. The sympathetic ganglia could be visualized via near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent thoracoscopy, we utilize this novel technique to observe the anatomical variation of sympathetic ganglia T3 and T4 and investigate its relationship with surgical outcomes. METHODS: This is a prospective multi-center cohort study. All patients received intravenous ind

Long-term potentiation of transmitter release induced by adrenaline in bull-frog sympathetic ganglia.

Long-term potentiation (l.t.p.) of transmitter release induced by adrenaline in bull-frog sympathetic ganglia was studied using intracellular recording techniques. The quantal content of the fast excitatory post-synaptic potentials (fast e.p.s.p.s: evoked by the nicotinic action of acetylcholine) was potentiated for more than several hours after treatment with adrenaline (1-100 microM). A similar l.t.p. of quantal content was produced consistently by isoprenaline (10 microM) and only in a certain fraction of cells by dopamine (10 microM). The l.t.p. induced by adrenaline (10 microM) was blocke

[The scientific rationale for the use of electroneurostimulation of the cervical sympathetic ganglia in patients with computer vision syndrome].

UNLABELLED: A frequent reason for visiting an ophthalmologist for patients of working age is computer vision syndrome (CVS): statistics show that up to 90% of users of personal electronic computers (PCs) suffer from this disease. Therefore, the actual task of modern rehabilitation medicine and ophthalmology is the search for an effective and safe way to prevent and treat the CVS among employees of enterprises. THE PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY: Was a scientific justification, an assessment of the effectiveness and safety of the use of electroneurostimulation (ENS) of the cervical sympathetic ganglia

Intraventricular infusion of nerve growth factor as the cause of sympathetic fiber sprouting in sensory ganglia.

OBJECT: The results of previous clinical trials have indicated that intraventricular infusion of nerve growth factor (NGF) in patients with Alzheimer's disease is frustrated by the appearance of weight loss and diffuse back pain. The present study tested whether NGF induces sympathetic sprouting in sensory ganglia. Such sprouting has been implicated in previous studies as a possible mechanism of sympathetically maintained pain in neuropathic animals. METHODS: Nineteen Long-Evans rats underwent intraventricular infusion of either artificial cerebrospinal fluid (ACSF; seven animals) or NGF (12

Rapid sprouting of sympathetic axons in dorsal root ganglia of rats with a chronic constriction injury.

We compared the time-course of sympathetic nerve sprouting into the L4-6 dorsal root ganglia (DRG) of adult rats following a chronic constriction injury (CCI) made on the sciatic nerve, or following sciatic nerve transection at the same site. We also tested the rats for changes in threshold for withdrawal from mechanical and thermal stimuli delivered to the hindpaws. We found sympathetic sprouting in DRG by 4 days following CCI, paralleling the decreases in mechanosensory threshold and preceding changes in thermal thresholds. However, with sciatic nerve transection, sympathetic sprouting was n

Ganglia of the cervical part of the sympathetic trunk in the white rat. Sources of blood supply and angioarchitectonics.

Each ganglion of the cervical part of the sympathetic trunk in white rat is supplied by several arteries of diameter of 15--30 micrometers. The arteries arise from three sources: 1) large vessels adjacent to the ganglia, 2) vascular net of connective and muscular tissues surrounding the ganglion, 3) vessels of nerves and interganglionic rami. The vascular network of the cervical sympathetic ganglia was connected with the vascular plexus of the vagus nerve and cervical as well as brachial plexuses.

Topographical study of the connections of the rami communicantes from the first to the fifth thoracic sympathetic ganglia.

This study investigated the morphological variations and histological patterns of the rami communicantes (RCs) arising from the first to the fifth thoracic sympathetic ganglia, and considered the clinical significance of these variations. Fifty upper thoracic portions from 26 adult Korean cadavers were used in this study. There were 731 RCs arising from the first to the fifth thoracic sympathetic ganglia. They were classified into three types depending on the connection between the sympathetic ganglion and the intercostal nerves: in type I, the RCs connected the ganglion to the corresponding i

Structural transformations in sympathetic ganglia and the thoracic part of the vagus nerve in conditions of gravitational overloading.

The aim of the present work was to undertake a complex of studies of structural transformations in the anterior thoracic ganglia of the sympathetic trunk and the thoracic part of the vagus nerve after acute and chronic gravitational overloading (GOL). Studies were performed on 28 white mongrel male rats aged 8-21 weeks. Animals of series I (acute GOL) were rotated in a centrifuge on one day (three rotation sessions with two 20-min breaks, giving a total rotation time of 31 min). Animals of series II (chronic GOL) were rotated in an alternating two-week regime for 13 weeks (total rotation time

Effectiveness of cervical sympathetic ganglia block on regeneration of the trigeminal nerve following transection in rats.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Stellate ganglion block (SGB) is one treatment option for human trigeminal nerve injury. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of cervical sympathetic ganglia blocks (SB) by comparing the recovery of severed nerves in 2 rat models, treated or not treated by SB. METHODS: The infraorbital nerves (ION) were cut in 108 rats. Fifty-four of them were treated daily by SB for 30 days (SB group). The remainder were left untreated (Control group). The stages of recovery were evaluated neurophysiologically by measuring somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) a

Degenerative and inflammatory lesions in sympathetic ganglia: further morphological evidence for an autonomic neuropathy in AIDS.

There is accumulating evidence that autonomic dysfunction occurs in HIV infection. While many studies have demonstrated autonomic abnormalities on clinical basis, only one has studied the morphology of sympathetic ganglia. The superior sympathetic ganglia of 12 randomly selected AIDS patients and those of 6 controls were examined morphologically in order to determine the frequency and severity of their involvement. Although they had not been investigated for autonomic dysfunction, 5 had suffered from non-infectious diarrhoea, one showed bilateral ptosis and another had non-specified visual pro

Sympathetic innervation of the rat's eye and peripheral ganglia: an electron microscopic autoradiographic tracing study.

The sympathetic innervation of the rat anterior eye segment and related peripheral ganglia was studied using light and electron microscopic autoradiography after anterograde tracing with 3H-leucine from the superior cervical ganglion. In the trigeminal and pterygopalatine ganglia, unmyelinated nerve fibers were labeled. Some fibers contained accumulations of small vesicles. Close apposition of these labeled sympathetic fibers with other unmyelinated fibers was common, and was also observed at sites where accumulations of vesicles were found. In the iris, ciliary body and trabeculum, numerous f

Pronase treatment increases the staining intensity of GABA-immunoreactive structures in the paravertebral sympathetic ganglia.

A novel tissue preparation technique for improving gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) immunocytochemistry has been developed. The influence of the glutaraldehyde concentration in the fixative and the effect of pronase treatment on the GABA immunostaining were tested. This method includes fixation with a high concentration of glutaraldehyde, gelatin embedding and treatment of the sections with pronase. In sympathetic (paravertebral) ganglia and their connectives, the most intense and specific immunoreaction was obtained with the following procedure: immersion fixation in 5% glutaraldehyde, infiltra

Histochemically demonstrable catecholamines in sympathetic ganglia and carotid body of spontaneously hypertensive and normotensive rats.

The catecholamine content and morphology of the superior cervical and the hypogastric ganglion and the carotid body were studied in Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats (SHR) before (at the age of 6 weeks) and after (at the age of 20 weeks) becoming hypertensive, with Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats as controls. The study was performed by formaldehyde-induced fluorescence method combined with quantitative microfluorimetry of catecholamines. At the age of 6 weeks the only significant difference observed between the rat strains was a greater number of small intensely fluorescent (SIF) cells in the superior c
