Ganglion cyst of the cruciate ligament with atlantoaxial subluxation.

BACKGROUND: Ganglion cysts of the cruciate ligament are rare and sometimes asymptomatic. The authors present three cases of ganglion cysts of the cruciate ligament with atlantoaxial subluxation, which has rarely been reported previously. METHODS: Generally, ganglion cysts of the cruciate ligament are reported as case reports. Several theories regarding the process of cyst formation and the development of treatment options have been described. However, trans-oral decompression with total removal of the cyst may be one of the options for treatment of this kind of disease. RESULTS: A retrospect

Radiopalmar ganglion cysts: prevalence, morphology, and clinical significance in wrist MRI.

OBJECTIVES: To assess radiopalmar ganglion cysts' (RPG) prevalence, morphology, and clinical significance in consecutive patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective single-center study, two radiologists assessed the presence of RPG and morphologic features on wrist MRI. Radiopalmar complaints and scapholunate ligament (SLL) tears were evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 1053 wrists in 909 patients (mean age 43.4 ± 15.5 years, 602 females) were evaluated. All 308 RPG (Group 1; 308 patients, 29.2%) originated from the palmar capsule; 49 were unilocular, 95 oligolocular, and 164 multilocu

Tibial intraneural ganglion cysts arising from the tibiofemoral joint: illustrative cases.

BACKGROUND: Intraneural cysts involving the tibial nerve in the knee region (popliteal fossa) are rare. According to the articular (synovial) theory, which posits a joint origin for this pathology, these cysts originate from either the superior tibiofibular joint (STFJ) or the tibiofemoral (knee) joint. As tibial intraneural cysts arising from the tibiofemoral joint remain poorly understood, the authors present 2 illustrative cases and a review of the world's literature on all tibial intraneural ganglion cysts in the knee region. OBSERVATIONS: Fourteen cases of tibial intraneural ganglion cys

[A case of tibial nerve palsy due to intraneural ganglion cysts].

A 39-year-old man presented with an 8-month history of pain and paresthesia of the right foot sole and difficulty in the right toe dorsiflexion. A neurological examination revealed weakness in performing both the ankle and right foot toe dorsiflexion, reduced right planta pedis sensation, and absent right Achilles tendon reflex. Tinel's sign was present on the right popliteal fossa and medial part of the right ankle. MRI of the right knee showed multiple cystic lesions in his right tibial nerve. The cystic lesions extended from the popliteal fossa and were thought to be intraneural ganglion cy

Evaluation of ganglion cysts using vastly undersampled isotropic projection reconstruction (VIPR).

For some atypical para-articular ganglia, the presence of a joint connection is highly controversial. The proper preoperative diagnosis and identification of this joint connection for ganglion cysts is important for patient treatment and outcome. MRI is the imaging modality of choice when evaluating such lesions, but the detection of subtle joint connections remains difficult with conventional MR protocols. We investigated the utility of a steady-state free-precession acquisition with isotropic high resolution using the vastly undersampled isotropic projection reconstruction (VIPR) pulse seque

Ganglion cysts at the gastrocnemius origin: a series of ten cases.

OBJECTIVE: To describe ganglion cysts arising close to the origin of the medial and lateral head of gastrocnemius as identified on magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. DESIGN AND PATIENTS: We present a series of ten cases of ganglion cysts arising close to the gastrocnemius origin from the medial and lateral femoral condyles. These were collected over a 6-year period from our imaging database. All patients attended for routine MR imaging of the knee with a variety of clinical presentations. Data collected included patient demographics, ganglion size, ganglion site, clinical presentation and ancil

Arthroscopic Resection for Extra-articular Ganglion Cysts of Gastrocnemius Near Vessels.

Extra-articular ganglion cysts arising from the gastrocnemius tendon near popliteal vessels can cause pain and claudication. Open resection of this kind of cyst has been described frequently because the vessels can be well protected with a retractor. However, it's a challenge to remove cysts that are near vessels under arthroscopy, because a retractor cannot be used in arthroscopic surgery. This article will report a method of arthroscopic resection for extra-articular ganglion cysts near popliteal vessels.

Excision with Temporary Interphalangeal Joint Pin Fixation for Toe Ganglion Cysts.

BACKGROUND: Toe ganglion cysts are often symptomatic and recurrent. Communicating lesions between ganglion cysts and the interphalangeal joint (IPJ) or tendon sheath make it difficult to prevent a recurrence. Temporary restriction of the joint and tendon motion can facilitate surgical site healing. This study analyzed the clinical results of temporary pin fixation of the IPJ after toe ganglion cyst excision. METHODS: Sixteen patients with symptomatic toe ganglion cysts underwent surgical treatment. Excision alone was initially performed on 10 patients. Six patients underwent temporary pin fix

Development of a tibial intraneural ganglion cyst after surgery on a peroneal intraneural ganglion in a pediatric patient: further support for the articular origin of intraneural ganglion cysts. Illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: The articular origin of intraneural cysts has been previously described and well supported. Intraneural ganglion cysts most commonly occur in adults and in the common peroneal nerve arising from the anterior aspect of the superior tibiofibular joint (STFJ). OBSERVATIONS: The authors report a pediatric patient who developed a tibial intraneural cyst arising from the posterior aspect of the STFJ within months after surgical treatment of a peroneal intraneural cyst from the anterior aspect of the same joint. Surgery consisted of disconnecting the articular branch of the peroneal nerv

Management and outcomes of proximal tibiofibular joint ganglion cysts: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Proximal tibiofibular joint (PTFJ) ganglion cysts are rare; however, their optimal management remains unclear. This study aimed to systematically review the surgical treatment options with a focus on recurrence rates and complications. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was performed, searching three electronic databases, according to the PRISMA guidelines. The presentation, treatment, and outcomes of PTFJ ganglion cysts of minimum 1-year follow-up was collected. Study quality was assessed using the Modified Downs and Blacks checklist. Surgical interventions were consi

Intraneural ganglion cysts originating from the hip joint: A single-center experience.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Intraneural ganglion cysts (INGCs) are non-neoplastic mucinous cysts within the epineurium of peripheral nerves. Characteristics of INGCs around the hip joint have not been adequately described. We aimed to describe clinical features, imaging findings, and treatment outcomes in patients with INGCs originating from the hip joint. METHODS: We retrospectively included cystic lesions around the hip joint satisfying the following inclusion criteria over 6 years: (1) multilocular elongated hyperintense cystic mass on T2-weighted imaging; and (2) distribution along the course of t

Periarticular Cysts of the Temporomandibular Joint Are More Frequently Synovial Than Ganglion.

PURPOSE: Differentiating between ganglion and synovial cysts by standard histology is difficult, leading to inaccurate statements on frequency for each of these periarticular lesions. The purpose of this study was to use immunohistochemical (IHC) analysis to 1) calculate the accuracy of the histologic diagnoses, 2) determine the frequency of ganglion and synovial cysts of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), and 3) compare the frequency of these lesions in the TMJ compared with the extracranial skeleton in patients treated at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is

Intraneural ganglion cysts: a systematic review and reinterpretation of the world's literature.

OBJECTIVE The etiology of intraneural ganglion cysts has been controversial. In recent years, substantial evidence has been presented to support the articular (synovial) theory for their pathogenesis. The authors sought to 1) perform a systematic review of the world's literature on intraneural cysts, and 2) reinterpret available published MR images in articles by other authors to identify unrecognized joint connections. METHODS In Part 1, all cases were analyzed for demographic data, duration of symptoms, the presence of a history of trauma, whether electromyography or nerve conduction studies

Ganglion cysts and other tumor related conditions of the hand and wrist.

Most regard ganglion, giant cell tumor of tendon sheath and epidermal inclusion cysts as tumor-like conditions as opposed to true neoplasms. Ganglion cysts are the most common lesion of the hand and wrist, accounting for 50% to 70% of all masses identified. The majority of ganglion cysts can be treated nonoperatively but when surgery is performed a low recurrence rate can be anticipated. Giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath hand epidermoid cysts are also common hand lesions that require surgical excision in most instances. Of the three, giant cell tumor of tendon sheath have the most notable

Unusual solitary ganglion cysts of the anterior segment of the lateral meniscus.

Generally, ganglion or synovial cysts have been reported to originate from numerous structures in and around the knee joint, including the anterior cruciate ligament, posterior cruciate ligament, popliteal tendon, and menisci. Nevertheless, a ganglion is not a synovial cyst and there is no synovial lining. Meniscal cysts present a subgroup of ganglion cysts that occur in association with meniscal tears. We report 2 cases of unusual meniscal cyst from the anterior segment of the lateral meniscus without any meniscal tear and discuss the possibility of their pathogenesis and treatment.

Inside the obturator canal: robotic ganglion cyst decompression.

BACKGROUND: Obturator nerve compression is an uncommon cause of groin and medial thigh pain. Ganglion cysts extending into the obturator foramen are rare and usually managed via open or orthopaedic approaches. Robotic neuropelveology offers high-definition access to pelvic neurovascular structures and may facilitate nerve-preserving excision. OBJECTIVES: To demonstrate a robotic pelvic approach to the obturator foramen for excision of a ganglion cyst inseparable from the obturator nerve, and to highlight multidisciplinary (MDT) planning in atypical neuropathic pelvic pain. PARTICIPANT: A 47-

Intratendinous Ganglion Cyst of the Extensor Indicis: A Case Report.

An intratendinous ganglion cyst is a very rare benign lesion with an unknown etiology. The clinical diagnosis can be difficult as patients may have mild symptoms or impaired hand functionality. Ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging can differentiate a ganglion cyst from other soft-tissue tumors and tumor-like lesions and provide excellent information on the location of an intratendinous lesion to schedule surgical treatment. We present a case report of a 50-year-old female diagnosed with an intratendinous ganglion cyst of the extensor indicis. She complained of right-hand swelling for thre
