Plasma gastrin immunoreactivity was measured by radioimmunoassay in 45 dogs with acute gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV). Significant increases (P less than 0.05) were found in dogs with acute GDV and in the fasted state after surgical treatment and recovery. The data suggested that dogs that have had GDV may have preexisting high plasma gastrin immunoreactivity. In dogs with acute GDV, plasma gastrin immunoreactivity was not found to be helpful in formulating prognosis. Circumcostal gastropexy did not affect plasma gastrin immunoreactivity.

Acute gastric dilatation (AGD) is usually related to eating disorders, postoperative status and mechanical obstruction of the duodenum. When intragastric pressure is augmented, it can lead to alteration of blood flow and result in transmural necrosis. However, there are very few reports on idiopathic AGD and so here we describe the case of a 26-year-old woman diagnosed with AGD without any apparent cause. Conservative treatment was initially conducted, but because of the persistence of dilatation, presence of gastric ulcer and gastric pneumatosis, a surgical approach was necessary. During surg

OBJECTIVE: To identify factors influencing the survival of confirmed gastric dilatation volvulus (GDV) cases presented to a specialist referral and emergency hospital.
METHODS: Clinical records of confirmed GDV cases admitted to two specialist referral and emergency centres in Sydney (Animal Referral Hospital (ARH) Homebush and ARH Baulkham Hills) between July 1999 and July 2019 were searched.
RESULTS: A total of 736 GDV cases were reviewed, of which 460 dogs were surgically treated and 276 dogs were humanely killed. The survival rates of patients operated on by general surgeons and speciali

An 8-year-old boy with a history of multiple neonatal laparotomies, including congenital diaphragmatic hernia repair and an open fundoplication, presented acutely with severe abdominal pain, distension, vomiting and shock. A large abnormal opacity in the left upper quadrant was visible on a plain abdominal radiograph. The patient was taken to the theatre for emergency laparotomy and was found to have a massively distended stomach, the fundus and body of which were necrotic. A subtotal gastrectomy was performed, sparing the viable tissue. The patient went on to make a full recovery. Acute massi

BACKGROUND: Proximal luminal dilatation (PLD) is one of the most significant challenges following laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB). If PLD is identified at an early stage, there is potential to avoid reoperation or irreversible change by implementing nonsurgical measures. The success of these strategies is unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the outcome of how often PLD can be successfully treated nonsurgically.
METHODS: The records of patients who underwent primary LAGB insertion by a single surgeon from January 2005 to December 2006 were reviewed. Study participant

Of 16 dogs treated medically and surgically for gastric dilatation-volvulus, 11 developed electrocardiographic evidence of ventricular dysrhythmias. Seven of these dogs had ventricular dysrhythmias for the first time during their hospitalization after surgery. The ventricular dysrhythmias included ventricular premature depolarizations, slow ventricular rhythms, paroxysmal ventricular tachycardia, ventricular tachycardia, and multifocal ventricular tachycardia. Two of these dogs had electrocardiographic evidence of atrial premature depolarizations at the time of hospitalization. Treatment with

OBJECTIVE: To assess gastric trocarization and orogastric tubing as a means of gastric decompression for the initial management of gastric dilatation-volvulus.
METHODS: Retrospective review of 116 gastric dilatation-volvulus cases from June 2001 to October 2009.
RESULTS: Decompression was performed via orogastric tubing in 31 dogs, gastric trocarization in 39 dogs and a combination of both in 46 dogs. Tubing was successful in 59 (75·5%) dogs and unsuccessful in 18 (23·4%) dogs. Trocarization was successful in 73 (86%) dogs and unsuccessful in 12 (14%) dogs. No evidence of gastric perforation

INTRODUCTION: The primary study objective was to characterize the pattern of in-hospital mortality in dogs with gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV), with a focus on preoperative nonsurvival.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of medical records from a 10-year period was undertaken at a university teaching hospital. Data collected included signalment, physical examination parameters at hospital presentation, blood lactate concentration, and outcome.
RESULTS: A total of 498 dogs were included. Overall, 319 (64.1%) survived to discharge and 179 (35.9%) were nonsurvivors. Of the non

Canine gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) is a common life-threatening condition occurring primarily in large and giant breeds with a 3.9% to 36.7% lifetime risk. The genetic correlates of GDV have not previously been systematically explored. We undertook an inter-breed genome-wide association analysis (GWAS) of 253 dogs from ten breeds including 106 healthy dogs and 147 dogs with at least one GDV episode. SNP array genotyping followed by imputation was conducted on 241 samples to identify GDV-associated single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and copy number variations (CNVs). A subset of 33 do

There is contradicting information in the veterinary literature regarding canine splenectomy and the increased risk for subsequent gastric dilatation-volvulus. The main purpose of this study was to determine the rate of occurrence of gastric dilatation-volvulus following splenectomy in medium to large breed dogs compared with a control group undergoing other abdominal procedures. Follow-up was performed by reviewing the medical records and conducting phone interviews. Weight, gender, and presence of a hemoabdomen at the time of surgery were not significantly associated with occurrence of gastr

Gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV) is a common emergency condition in large and giant breed dogs that is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Dogs with GDV classically fulfill the criteria for the systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and can go on to develop multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Previously reported organ dysfunctions in dogs with GDV include cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, coagulation and renal dysfunction. Cardiovascular manifestations of GDV include shock, cardiac arrhythmias and myocardial dysfunction. Respiratory dysfunction is al

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy (PPPD) is the standard treatment for periampullary and pancreatic head tumors. Delayed gastric emptying (DGE) is the most common (ranging from 15-45%) but not life threatening complication and impairs patient recovery and prolongs the hospital stay after PPPD. The precise pathomechanism of DGE is still unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the method of pyloric dilatation performed at the time of PPPD could improve gastric emptying.
METHODOLOGY: Forty patients underwent PPPD for pancreatic or periampullary lesions fr

OBJECTIVE: Delayed gastric emptying after esophageal operations occurs in up to 50% of patients. A good quality of life, in long-term survivors after esophagectomy, may depend on both dietary adaptation and the improvement of intrathoracic gastric motility itself. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of pyloric balloon dilatation on the sustained delay of gastric emptying after esophagectomy.
METHODS: Two hundred and fifty-seven patients underwent esophagectomy with a gastric conduit from January 2003 to December 2006. A gastric drainage procedure was routinely performed

Phenobarbital (PB) therapy is frequently associated with elevated serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and alkaline phosphatase (AP) activities in dogs without clinical signs of liver disease. The goal of this study was to determine if increased serum ALT and AP activities in clinically healthy PB-treated epileptic dogs are due to hepatic enzyme induction or to subclinical liver injury. Liver biopsies were obtained from 12 PB-treated dogs without clinical signs of liver disease but with elevated serum ALT and/or AP activities or both. Liver biopsies were obtained from eight healthy control dog

A large, adult male polar bear (Ursus maritimus) was found dead on a barrier island north of Prudhoe Bay, Alaska (USA), in June 1987. There were no external signs of trauma. A twisted distended stomach, distinctive parenchymal and fascial congestion, and significant difficulty in repositioning the anterior abdominal organs, indicated that gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) was the proximate cause of death. Polar bears frequently consume large quantities of food at one time and have large stomachs that are well adapted to periodic gorging. The scarcity of food in winter and early spring, combine
