OBJECTIVE: To define the predictors of the rate of gastric emptying in patients with diabetes.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A total of 101 outpatients with diabetes (79 type 1 and 22 type 2) underwent measurements of gastric emptying of a solid/liquid meal (scintigraphy), upper gastrointestinal symptoms (questionnaire), glycemic control (blood glucose concentrations during gastric emptying measurement), and autonomic nerve function (cardiovascular reflexes).
RESULTS: The gastric emptying of solid and/or liquid was delayed in 66 (65%) patients. Solid (retention at 100 min 64 +/- 3.2 vs. 50.2

OBJECTIVES: To investigate: 1) the rate of gastric emptying of portal hypertensive patients and 2) whether alterations in gastric emptying play any role in the development of portal hypertensive gastropathy.
METHODS: Fifty patients (37 with esophageal varices) with cirrhosis and seven with extrahepatic portal hypertension underwent upper GI endoscopy followed by radionuclide gastric emptying studies using a semi-solid meal. Twenty-six patients also under went corrected wedged hepatic venous pressure measurement. Sixteen normal subjects underwent gastric emptying studies only.

We have studied the gastric (fundic and antral) emptying of solids and liquids by a radionuclide method in 20 patients after truncal vagotomy and pyloroplasty (TVP) and in 10 control subjects. Gastric emptying of solids in TVP patients was similar to that of the control group (NS), but fundic emptying did not show a lag phase and was significantly faster. A significantly higher percentage of the solid fraction of the test meal filled the antrum (32 +/- 16% versus 20 +/- 9%; p less than 0.05), and this quantity was constant during the study period.
