The recruitment of mechanosensitive enteric neurons in the guinea pig gastric fundus is dependent on ganglionic stretch level.

BACKGROUND: Serving as a reservoir, the gastric fundus can expand significantly, with an initial receptive and a following adaptive relaxation, controlled by extrinsic and intrinsic reflex circuits, respectively. We hypothesize that mechanosensitive enteric neurons (MEN) are involved in the adaptive relaxation, which is initiated when a particular gastric volume and a certain stretch of the stomach wall is reached. To investigate whether the responsiveness of MEN in the gastric fundus is dependent on tissue stretch, we performed mechanical stimulations in stretched versus ganglia "at rest". M…

Splenosis in gastric fundus mimicking gastrointestinal stromal tumor: a report of two cases and review of the literature.

Splenosis refers to heterotopic autotransplantation and implantation of splenic tissue following splenic trauma or surgery. Splenosis in gastric fundus is rare and difficult to diagnose, since splenosis has similar manifestation with gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) under routine endoscopy examination. In this report, we present two quite rare case of splenosis. Both of their pre-operative diagnose under endoscopic ultrasonography was considered as GIST. Finally, one in the abdominal cavity, adhering closely to the gastric fundus, measuring 20 mm × 15 mm, was resected by surgical operatio…

Region-specific effects of STW 5 (Iberogast) and its components in gastric fundus, corpus and antrum.

Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a disorder that involves impaired gastric accommodation, antral hypomotility, and upper abdominal pain. The herbal drug STW 5 (Iberogast) is used to successfully treat FD patients. Here, we report in vitro data revealing the mode of action of STW 5 and its individual herbal extracts on gastric motility. STW 5 evoked a relaxation of the proximal stomach but increased antral motility. Both effects are myogenic. The extracts of Angelica root, chamomile flower and liquorice root mimicked the inhibitory effects in the proximal stomach whereas the extracts of greater cel

Role of chronic atrophic gastritis of the body-fundus and achlorhydria in the development of epithelial dysplasia and gastric carcinoma.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Chronic atrophic gastritis of the body-fundus with hypo-achlorhydria has been long since considered the precursor of gastric cancer (GC). A study has been made about the histological pattern of the body-fundic mucosa (oxyntic area) in course of preneoplastic lesions (epithelial dysplasia), associated or progressed to gastric cancer, in order to evaluate the real association with chronic atrophic gastritis and, therefore, with a reduced acid secretion. METHODOLOGY: The study of the histological condition of the body-fundic mucosa and of the acid secretion has been effected in 1

Gastric atrial natriuretic peptide regulates endocrine secretion in antrum and fundus of human and rat stomach.

Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) is present in gastric mucosa and preferentially binds to two subtypes of natriuretic peptide receptors (NPR), NPR-A and NPR-C. The present study examines the role of endogenous ANP in regulating endocrine secretion in rat and human stomachs. NPR-A protein expression and transcripts were identified in rat antral and fundic mucosa by Western blot and RT-PCR. In superfused rat and human antral and fundic segments, ANP (0.1 pM to 0.1 microM) caused a concentration-dependent increase in somatostatin secretion. In antrum, this was accompanied by a decrease in gastrin

Short air bubble in the gastric fundus during fasting: radiographic sign of gastroparesis after lung transplantation.

This study was undertaken to assess whether gastroparesis, as a chronic complication of lung transplantation, correlates with height of the gastric air bubble on chest radiographs of erect fasting subjects. Height of the gastric air bubble and presence or absence of a gastric air-fluid level were assessed on chest radiographic examinations (posteroanterior, lateral, upright position, during fasting, immediately after bronchoscopy, median 148 days after transplantation) obtained on 3 separate days for each of 19 recipients of lung transplantation. Seven of the subjects (five women, two men) had

The role of l-cysteine/Hydrogen sulfide pathway on β3-Adrenoceptor- induced relaxation in mouse gastric fundus.

In this study, we investigated the possible role of the l-cysteine/hydrogen sulfide pathway in β3-adrenoceptors-mediated relaxation in isolated mouse gastric fundus tissue. l-cysteine (endogenous H2S; 10-6-10-2 M), sodium hydrogen sulfide (NaHS; exogenous H2S; 10-6-10-3 M), selective β3-adrenoceptors agonist BRL 37344 (10-9-10-4 M) and non-selective β-adrenoceptor agonist isoprenaline (10-9-10-4 M) produced concentration-dependent relaxation in mouse gastric fundus. The non-selective β-adrenoceptors antagonist propranolol (10-6 M) inhibited the relaxant response to isoprenaline but not to BRL …

Role of beta-3-adrenoceptor in catecholamine-induced relaxations in gastric fundus from control and diabetic rats.

The contribution of beta-adrenoceptor subtypes to the catecholamine-mediated relaxations in gastric fundus from control and streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats were investigated. Isolated organ bath studies and molecular techniques were used to characterize the beta-adrenoceptor subtypes mediating relaxation of rat gastric fundus. Isoprenaline-mediated relaxation was not significantly changed by nadolol (beta(1)-/beta(2)-adrenoceptor antagonist; 1 micromol/l) but only shifted to the right by SR59230A (3-(2-ethylphenoxy)-1-[[(1S)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphth-1-yl]amino]-(2S)-2-propanol oxala…

Transcatheter arterial infusion chemotherapy combined with lipiodol chemoembolization for advanced gastric fundus and cardia cancer with obstruction.

PURPOSE: Gastric fundus and cardia cancer are increasingly common, diagnosed at a late stage, often with severe obstruction, and have a poor prognosis. Transcatheter arterial lipiodol chemoembolization (TACE) is rarely used for gastric cancer. This single-center retrospective study aimed to analyze the efficacy and safety of transcatheter arterial infusion chemotherapy (TAI) combined with TACE in advanced gastric fundus and cardia cancer with obstruction and compare it to bland embolization (BE). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The clinical efficacy of TAI-TACE was evaluated through technical and clin…

Amylin, released from the gastric fundus, stimulates somatostatin and thus inhibits histamine and acid secretion in mice.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Amylin, a peptide that displays 50% homology with calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), is colocalized with somatostatin in endocrine cells of the gastric fundus. The present study was designed to determine the mechanism of action of amylin on gastric exocrine and endocrine secretion. METHODS: Acid secretion was measured in the isolated mouse stomach by titration. Somatostatin and histamine secretion were measured in rat fundic segments by radioimmunoassay. RESULTS: In isolated mouse stomach, amylin caused a concentration-dependent decrease in acid secretion. In rat fund…

A Case Report of Bronchogenic Cyst in the Posterior Wall of Gastric Fundus With Elevated CEA and CA199 in Cystic Fluid.

Bronchogenic cysts originate from abnormal foregut budding during embryogenesis. Two pathogenic mechanisms exist: (1) ectopic migration of tracheobronchial precursors forming cysts in extrapulmonary sites, and (2) retained bronchial buds developing pulmonary cysts through mucus accumulation. Despite anatomical variations, all cysts retain respiratory epithelium with mucinous glands, pathognomonically reflecting their embryological origin. Herein, we report an unusual case of bronchogenic cyst in the posterior wall of the gastric fundus with elevated CEA and CA199 in cystic fluid. CT showed tha…

Extraluminal laparoscopic wedge-resection of submucosal tumors on the posterior wall of the gastric fundus close to the esophagocardiac junction.

PURPOSE: Laparoscopic resection of submucosal tumors in the gastric fundus, especially in the posterior wall near the esophagocardiac junction (ECJ), is difficult and time consuming and is and likely to cause esophageal stenosis and splenic injury. In this article, we report an extraluminal laparoscopic wedge-resection (ELWR) that minimizes these problems. METHODS: Thirty-seven patients with submucosal tumors in the posterior wall of the gastric fundus received ELWR. The operation consisted of four steps: 1) localization of the tumor, 2) dissection of the omentum, 3) mobilization of the gastr…

Influence of age on the signal transduction pathway of non-adrenergic non-cholinergic neurotransmitters in the rat gastric fundus.

1. The influence of aging on the relaxant response and the change in cyclic nucleotide content induced by vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), nitric oxide (NO), electrical field stimulation of the non-adrenergic non-cholinergic neurones and substances acting at different levels of the cyclic AMP and cyclic GMP transduction pathways was studied in longitudinal muscle strips of the rat gastric fundus. 2. The relaxant responses to VIP, sustained electrical stimulation, forskolin and 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine were reduced with age, while the responses to dibutyryl cyclic AMP were not. The i…

[Heterotopia of the gastric fundus wall in bilobate gallbladder associated with dilatation of the main bile duct. Description of a case].

On the basis of a recent case of fundic gastric heterotopia in the gallbladder, the principal, possible embryogenetic hypotheses of the malformation are described and discussed. The possibility that acid secretion of the gastric glands contained in the ectopic fundic mucosa determined part of the symptomatological and clinical picture accompanying signs of lithiasic cholecystopathy is also evaluated.
