Russell body gastritis is caused by an accumulation of plasma cells within the gastric mucosa. These plasma cells are characterized by eosinophilic cytoplasmic inclusions of immunoglobulin which are called "Russell bodies". We report a case of Russell body gastritis in a 28-year-old male who presented with abdominal pain and rectal bleeding. Endoscopy showed erosions with edema and vascular congestion in the gastric body and antrum. The biopsy showed chronic gastritis with plasma cell infiltration of the lamina propria. Many plasma cells contained cytoplasmic Russell bodies which stained posit

Chronic gastritis are inflammatory diseases of the gastric mucosa whose diagnosis depends on pathological examination. They are frequent and cover a significant part of the daily activity of pathologists. Their origin is often infectious, particularly by Helicobacter Pylori. Several classifications of chronic gastritis were proposed but in order to achieve standardization in the drafting of pathological reports of gastric biopsies, pathologists currently following the recommendations of the revisted Sydney System. A 63-year-old woman who presented with chest and back pain underwent an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy which revealed elevated legion in the antrum mucosa. Histologic examinations of gastric biopsies were showing monoclonal proliferation plasma cells containing Russell bodies. Differential diagnosis from B-cell lymphoma and plasmacytoma is difficult, because of monoclonality. Molecular analyses of immunoglobulin heavy chain (IgH) gene demonstrated that gene rearrangement was negative. Thus, diagnosis of Russell body gastritis was made. The Giemsa stains were also showing infection of Helicob

Alkaline reflux gastritis and the symptoms associated with alkaline reflux gastritis have been reported in the medical literature since shortly after Billroth successfully performed his first gastrectomy in the 1880s. The disease process is produced by, or at least is associated with, the reflux of alkaline secretions into the gastric remnant. Although it occurs after any procedure that ablates the pylorus including pyloroplasty, it would appear to be most common after a Billroth II gastrojejunostomy. How the alkaline secretions cause the gastritis is still controversial. Clearly, the most eff

In current ICU populations, overt bleeding from stress gastritis occurs in 10% to 20% of patients. Bleeding rates may be reduced to about 3% in patients receiving prophylactic therapy. Although patients with bleeding have higher mortality rates than other critically ill patients, it is not clear that the mortality rate is improved with prophylactic therapy, as most patients die from their underlying disease. As new complications of prophylactic therapy are identified, better definitions of the population at risk to develop complications of stress gastritis will be necessary to select those pat

Bile reflux gastritis is a disabling postgastrectomy condition characterized by abdominal pain, bilious vomiting, and weight loss. The syndrome appears to be caused by free enterogastric reflux of bile and other proximal small bowel constituents. Endoscopic confirmation of bile reflux and documentation of gastritis support the diagnosis but are not specific for it. Results of medical therapy with chelating agents or drugs that promote gastric motility have been disappointing. Diet and antacids frequently aggravate symptoms. The only effective treatment is surgical diversion of bile away from t

Fourteen cases of gastritis cystica polyposa, four gastric adenomas and 25 "mature" erosions removed by diathermy at endoscopy were studied by light microscopy. Twenty surgical resections from gastric cancer patients and 18 gastric resections from gastroenterostomy patients previously operated upon for benign lesions were also studied. The mucosa showed consistent changes which were grouped as "gastritis cystica superficialis". Most surgical specimens, three out of 25 "mature" erosions, the four adenomas, and eight cases of gastritis cystica polyposa showed cystic gastric glands within the sub

Any surgical procedure that ablates the pyloric sphincter mechanism permits increased reflux of duodenal fluid into the stomach or gastric remnant. Although it is reported as most common with Billroth II gastrectomy, our experience indicates that reflux is nearly as frequent after Billroth I gastroduodenostomy and is not at all infrequent after pyloroplasty. The precise constituents of duodenal fluid which damage the gastric mucosa remain controversial. The best present evidence is that the bile acids are probably essential, but that one or more other constituents of duodenal content are also

A 45-year-old Japanese man underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy, which revealed spotty redness at the gastric fornix, mucosal swelling, diffuse redness in the corpus, and mucosal atrophy in the gastric angle and antrum. Histological examination showed rod-shaped bacteria that appeared larger than Helicobacter pylori. The patient tested positive for rapid urease test, and serum anti-H. pylori IgG antibody test results were negative. Further examination of the bacteria revealed that H. suis antibody test was positive, and the presence of H. suis was confirmed using H. suis-specific real-time PCR

Minimal chronic inactive gastritis is regularly observed in routine histopathology. Presently, it is not clear whether this type of gastritis should be regarded as a histopathological entity or a normal variant. The similarity to lesions observed after H.pylori eradication prompted us to look for an association between minimal chronic inactive gastritis and status post H.pylori eradication. In a prospective study of 110 consecutive patients undergoing upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, at least two mucosal biopsies were taken from the gastric antrum and body. Gastritis was classified according

The authors report 14 cases of lymphocytic gastritis, 13 of which correspond to an endoscopic appearance of varioliform gastritis. Epigastric pain was present in 91.6% of cases. Varioliform pattern corresponded to an antral site in 69.2% of cases and to the body in 30.8% of cases. Lymphocytic gastritis was diagnosed in 7 cases (46%), 6 of which corresponded to a varioliform gastritis. An associated duodenal ulcer was noted in 28.5% of our cases of lymphocytic gastritis.

We investigated the question as to how frequently Helicobacter pylori gastritis is present in cases of endoscopically detected giant folds of the corpus and fundic mucosa, and whether this gastritis differs from Helicobacter pylori associated gastritis with no giant folds. Biopsy material obtained from 138 patients with giant folds (sex ratio: 1.0 men: 105 women; average age 61.0 years) was evaluated histologically and compared with that obtained from 1,196 patients with H. pylori associated gastritis without giant folds (1.1 men: 1.0 women; average age 51.9 years). Among the patients with gia

Basal and pentagastrin-stimulated peak acid outputs were determined in 21 subjects with chronic atrophic gastritis and 10 subjects with chronic superficial gastritis. All subjects were Caucasian. The histological diagnosis was based on multiple gastric biopsy specimens obtained through a fibregastroscope. Comparison of the results with those of a previously reported Caucasian control group show that the mean basal acid outputs of subjects with chronic (superficial) gastritis were significantly higher than that of controls and subjects with chronic atrophic gastritis. No significant difference

This editorial provides an update of the recent evidence on the endoscopy-based Kyoto classification of gastritis, clarifying the shortcomings of the Kyoto classification, and providing prospects for future research, with particular focus on the histological subtypes of gastric cancer (GC) and Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection status. The total Kyoto score is designed to express GC risk on a score ranging from 0 to 8, based on the following five endoscopic findings: Atrophy, intestinal metaplasia (IM), enlarged folds (EF), nodularity, and diffuse redness (DR). The total Kyoto score ref

OBJECTIVES: The Kyoto classification of gastritis was established for diagnosing Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection via endoscopic findings. We investigated the role of the Kyoto classification of gastritis in the diagnosis of H. pylori infection and histological gastritis in Japanese individuals. Moreover, the histological findings of gastritis in H. pylori infection were examined based on age and sex differences.
METHODS: We selected 561 patients aged 20-79 years who underwent gastroduodenal endoscopy at our hospital between 2010 and 2018. Endoscopic biopsy specimens from the antrum

AIMS: To examine the course of lymphocytic gastritis and its relation to Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) infection in a 10 year follow up.
METHODS: Ninety six patients were originally examined for dyspepsia in 1981. Gastroscopies with stepwise biopsies were performed on all the patients initially and after an interval of 10 years.
RESULTS: Nine per cent of the patients (9/96) had features of lymphocytic gastritis in gastric biopsy at the first examination, and 12.5% (12/96) at the second examination; 7/9 patients (78%) had persistent lymphocytic gastritis during the follow up; in two the diag
