BACKGROUND/AIM: To use liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) to identify endogenous differential metabolites in the urine of rats with chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Methylnitronitrosoguanidine (MNNG) was used to produce a CAG model in Wistar rats, and HE staining was used to determine the pathological model. LC-MS was used to detect the differential metabolic profiles in rat urine. Diversified analysis was performed by the statistical method.
RESULTS: Compared with the control group, the model group had 68 differential metabolites, 25 that were upregulate

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune atrophic gastritis (AAG) is characterised by a wide clinical spectrum that could delay its diagnosis.
AIMS: To quantify the diagnostic delay in patients suffering from AAG and to explore possible risk factors for longer diagnostic delay.
METHODS: Consecutive patients with AAG evaluated at our gastroenterological outpatient clinic between 2009 and 2018 were included. Diagnostic delay was estimated as the time lapse occurring between the appearance of the first likely symptoms, laboratory alterations, and other clues indicative of AAG and the final diagnosis. Patient-dep

PURPOSE: Chronic Gastritis is the most common manifestation of infection with Helicobacter pylori. Changes in the gastric mucosa have tendency to progress towards mucosal atrophy, most likely in patients with gastric ulcer. We have explored the frequency of the presence of atrophic gastritis in patients with gastric and duodenal ulcers.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: We included 175 patients in a prospective study, 119 of whom were patients with duodenal ulcer and 56 suffered from gastric ulcer. The mean age of the patients with duodenal ulcer was 42.27 years, while patients with gastric ulcer had a me

AIM: To analyse diagnostic potential of "serological gastrobiopsy" in patients with various gastroduodenal diseases.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 244 patients with gastroduodenal pathology have been examined. The diagnoses made morphologically were compared with those made by the serological method. The diagnosis of duodenal ulcer, gastric ulcer, atrophic gastritis, nonatrophic gastritis was made in 155, 31, 43 and 15 patients, respectively. The type of chronic gastritis was diagnosed by the levels of gastrin-17, pepsinogen I, pepsinogen II and antibodies to Helicobacter pylori in blood s

The authors describe a current approach to the laboratory diagnosis of chronic gastritis, by using the plates of serological tests: pepsinogen I (PG-I), gastrin 17, and antibodies to Helicobacter pylori (HP). These tests and a questionnaire were used to examine 168 persons aged 45-70 years, who were a random population sample. Almost a fourth of the adult population was observed to have pronounced gastric mucosal atrophic changes, which might be associated with the high prevalence of HP infection. The concentration of PG-I is high in the persons infected with HP, its cytotoxic strains in parti

BACKGROUND: Atrophic gastritis is defined as a loss of the glandular structures and a collapse of the reticulin skeleton of the stomach mucosa. It is often accompanied by intestinal metaplasia. Both conditions result from long-term persistent chronic active gastritis and significantly increase the risk for gastric cancer.
METHODS: Review of the role of Helicobacter pylori in the pathogenesis of atrophic gastritis. Specific attention is given to the classifications and histologic features of atrophic gastritis, the frequency with which atrophic gastritis occurs in H. pylori-infected subjects,

According to clinical and histological researches, a conclusion can be accepted that the chronic atrophic gastritis is a very serious precancerous condition of stomach. Biological key and connection between these two entities seemed to be intestinal metaplasia, but it has been suggested lately, that the dysplasia of gastric mucose was responsible for malignant proliferation in stomach mucose. The aim of this study was to determine the precancerous potential of the chronic atrophic gastritis, measuring the frequency of dysplasia of gastric mucose, type II and III, which are considered as precan

In this study, Syndrome of Deficiency revealed that gastric acid secretion, cellular immunity, hematopoietic and synthetic metabolism were all decreased. The RBC, Hb, TG, HDL-C, CD8, infection rate of HP, the degree of atypical hyperplasia and the staining intensity of PNA were different for Spleen-Kidney-Deficiency syndrome from spleen-Deficiency syndrome, the former was lower than the latter, while LPO was higher and ESR was faster for the former. Syndrome of Excess revealed that the serum gastrin level was higher, humoral immunity and catabolic metabolism were increased, its blood was in hy

With methylene blue dye spraying endoscopy 392 Japanese outpatients with gastric diseases, and 253 Japanese and 84 Canadian outpatients free of gross findings in the stomach were investigated on chronic atrophic gastritis in special reference to intestinal metaplasia. Second, with the same technique 176 asymptomatic healthy residents in Kyoto, Japan, were also investigated, in which 50 residents were followed for two years and 32 subjects for four years. In each population subjects, with increasing age the fundic-pyloric (F-P) border shifted cephalad indicating atrophy of the fundic mucosa. Ja

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Atrophic gastritis may be inversely associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) symptoms. The aim of this study was to determine the association between GERD symptoms, endoscopic atrophy grade, and histologic atrophy score.
METHODOLOGY: A total of 1,555 consecutive subjects who underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy for health check-ups were enrolled prospectively. All persons were given a self-reported questionnaire for GERD symptoms (heartburn and/or regurgitation) and were classified into the following two groups: GERD symptoms group and no GERD symptoms group. The correlation between urease activity of Campylobacter pylori and atrophic gastritis was studied. On the basis of fundamental study on the optimal pH of C. pylori urease activity, urease activity of 38 biopsied specimens were measured under pH 5 condition, and compared with the positive ratio of C. pylori. In this study, sensitivity was 86.7%, and specificity was 87.0%, respectively. Mean urease activity of C. pylori positive specimens was 3.69 mIU/mg protein, and under this condition, C. pylori was likely to produce ammonia of 0.0218 mumole per minute, enough to damage the gastric mucosa. BACKGROUND: The clinical manifestations of AMAG are diverse and easily overlooked. The exact diagnostic criteria for AMAG are yet to be standardized, and serological tests lack clinical practices.
METHODS: This case report demonstrates the process of searching for etiologic agents in a patient with PA.
RESULTS: Serological tests showed positive APCAs, decreased serum pepsinogen (PG)I, decreased PGI/PGII ratio, and increased serum gastrin (GAS). After supplementation with hematopoietic raw materials such as vitamin B12 and folic acid, the patient recovered well.
CONCLUSIONS: This case report

PURPOSE: Calcitonin (Ct) is currently the most sensitive biochemical marker of C-cell disease (medullary thyroid cancer [MTC] and C-cell hyperplasia), but its specificity is relatively low. Our aim was to examine whether autoimmune atrophic gastritis (AAG) and chronic hypergastrinemia, with or without chronic autoimmune thyroiditis (AT), are conditions associated with increased Ct levels.
METHODS: Three groups of patients were consecutively enrolled in this multicentric study: group A consisted of patients with histologically-proven AAG (n = 13; 2 males, 11 females); group B fulfilled the cr

We report a case of a gastric carcinoid tumor in an anemic woman with chronic atrophic gastritis and hypergastrinemia. An antrectomy with excision of a carcinoid tumor was performed; afterwards, gastrinemia was normal. Gastric carcinoids were considered uncommon gastric cancers; however, in recent years they have been studied with increasing interest because, as in chronic atrophic gastritis, it has been suggested that they might be produced by prolonged hypergastrinemia associated with therapeutic use of gastric acid supressors. We discuss the gastrin hypothesis, the different clinical types

A wealth of research indicates that superficial gastritis (SG) and atrophic gastritis (AG) are precursors to gastric cancer (GC). While Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) has long been recognized as a key player in GC development, recent findings by Fu et al. have identified Streptococcus anginosus (S. anginosus) as an emerging pathogen that can trigger SG, AG and GC. S. anginosus, a gram-positive coccus, leverages its surface protein T. pallidum membrane protein C (TMPC) to engage with the annexin A2 (ANXA2) receptor of gastric epithelial cells, facilitating its colonization and invasion in the

BACKGROUND: Chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) is a pathological stage in the Correa's cascade, whereby Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is the primary cause. Cellular senescence is an inducing factor for cancer occurrence and cellular senescence is an obvious phenomenon in gastric mucosal tissues of H. pylori-positive CAG patients.
METHODS: In this review, we collated the information on cellular senescence and H. pylori-positive CAG.
RESULTS: At present, only a few studies have observed the effect of cellular senescence on precancerous lesions. In combination with the latest research
