Nationwide registry for patients with neuroendocrine neoplasm of pancreas, gastrointestinal tract, lungs, bronchi, or thymus in Japan.

BackgroundNeuroendocrine neoplasm (NEN) is a comparatively rare tumor that has been considered indolent. Due to these characteristics, detailed epidemiological data have not been analyzed in Japan. To elucidate the present status of NEN diagnosis and treatment in Japan, we started a registry cohort study in January 2015.MethodsPatients pathologically diagnosed with NENs of the pancreas, gastrointestinal tract, lungs, bronchi, or thymus after January 2012 were enrolled in this registry after the date of ethics review committee approval in each hospital or institute. Follow-up was continued for

Gastrointestinal bleeding as initial presentation of extramedullary plasma cell neoplasms: A case report and review of the literature.

BackgroundPlasma-cell neoplasms rarely involve the gastrointestinal tract and manifest as gastrointestinal bleeding. Plasmablastic myeloma is an aggressive plasma cell neoplasm associated with poor outcomes. A small number of cases with gastrointestinal involvement is reported in the literature and therefore high index of suspicion is essential for avoiding delays in diagnosis and treatment.Case summaryOur aim is to present our experience of a 70-year-old patient with a secondary presentation of plasmablastic myeloma manifesting as unstable upper gastrointestinal bleeding and to review the lit

Cutoff values of serum ferritin and TIBC saturation for the evaluation of gastrointestinal neoplasms in adult anemic patients.

We conducted a retrospective study to find out the optimum values of serum ferritin and other hematologic indices in adult anemic patients who should be referred for thorough gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopic evaluation for GI neoplasms. 544 adult anemic patients were stratified into three groups according to the results of GI endoscopy: benign versus premalignant versus malignant. As compared to non-malignant groups, malignant group demonstrated statistically significant differences in terms of median values of ferritin and total iron-binding capacity (TIBC) saturation. By receiver operating c

[Gastrointestinal reconstruction by intestinal auto-transplantation after radical resection of neoplasms involving superior mesenteric artery: a preliminary consideration].

When abdominal neoplasms originating from the pancreas or nearby organs locally involving the superior mesenteric artery (SMA), complete resection is still the only hope for cure. However, SMA resection and reconstruction is a complex surgical procedure associated with high postoperative morbidity and mortality. Intestinal autotransplantation has recently emerged in clinical practice as a treatment option for selected patients with neoplasms involving the SMA. The original procedure involved en bloc removal of a tumor together with the intestine, ex vivo resection and reconstruction of gastroi

The Impact of Artificial Intelligence-Assisted Endoscopy on the Detection of Upper Gastrointestinal Neoplasms: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses.

OBJECTIVES: Early detection of upper gastrointestinal (UGI) neoplasms is challenging because of their subtle endoscopic features. Artificial intelligence (AI) has improved endoscopic imaging and lesion recognition. This meta-analysis aimed to assess the effectiveness of AI-assisted real-time esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) for detecting UGI neoplasms based on evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs). METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library were searched for RCTs comparing AI-assisted EGD with conventional EGD up to April 11, 2026. Risk ratios (RRs) were calculated for the neop

Association of systemic inflammatory response index with all-cause and malignant neoplasm mortality in patients with gastrointestinal disease.

BACKGROUND: Apart from being a primary cause of morbidity and mortality globally, gastrointestinal (GI) disorders also contribute significantly to the cost of healthcare. In patients with GI diseases, the systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI) is not often used as a marker of systemic immune inflammation to assess mortality-associated risk from malignant neoplasms or all causes. Therefore, the objective of this study was to elaborate on the link between SIRI and all causes and malignant neoplasm mortality in patients with GI disorders. METHODS: Retrospective analysis was performed using

Primary NTRK -rearranged Spindle Cell Neoplasm of the Gastrointestinal Tract: A Clinicopathological and Molecular Analysis of 8 Cases.

NTRK-rearranged spindle cell neoplasm occurs predominantly in the superficial or deep soft tissues of extremities or trunk. Occurrence in the visceral organs is extremely rare. Herein, we describe 8 cases of NTRK-rearranged spindle cell neoplasm that arose primarily in the gastrointestinal tract. Patients included 5 males and 3 females with age at presentation ranging from 6 to 63 years (median: 29.5 years). Tumors occurred in the colon (n=3), small intestine (n=2), rectum (n=2), and stomach (n=1). Tumor size ranged from 3.5 to 9 cm (median: 5 cm). Morphologically, 4 tumors were low-grade, com

Immunohistochemical expression of chemokine receptor in neuroendocrine neoplasms (CXCR4) of the gastrointestinal tract: a retrospective study of 71 cases.

AIM: C-X-C motif chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) is expressed in many tumor entities, including gastrointestinal neuroendocrine neoplasms (GI-NENs). However, the role of CXCR4 expression in GI-NENs has been less studied. Our objective was to investigate the expression of CXCR4 in a series of GI-NENs with various clinical and pathological features. METHODS: The immunohistochemical (IHC) expression of CXCR4 (clone UMB2) was examined in 71 GI-NENs and a semiquantitative immunoreactivity score (IRS) was calculated taking into consideration the intensity of the IHC reaction and the percentage of the

Malignant gastrointestinal neuroectodermal tumour arising in the extrahepatic bile ducts; a rare neoplasm in an unusual anatomic location.

Malignant gastrointestinal neuroectodermal tumour (GNET) is a rare, aggressive neoplasm with fewer than 100 cases reported in the literature. Most cases arise in the tubular gastrointestinal tract. We reported a unique case of GNET arising in the extrahepatic bile ducts and reviewed the literature of GNETs. The patient is a female in her mid-30s who presented with painless jaundice and diarrhoea several months after cholecystectomy for biliary dyskinesia. Workup revealed a tumour arising from the peripheral 4B bile ducts involving the left hepatic duct and bifurcation. Histologic examination o

Examining the impact of early enteral nutritional support on postoperative recovery in patients undergoing surgical treatment for gastrointestinal neoplasms.

BACKGROUND: Patients with gastrointestinal tumors often suffer from poor nutritional status during treatment. Surgery is the main treatment for these patients, but the long postoperative recovery period is often accompanied by digestive and absorption dysfunction, leading to further deterioration of the nutritional status. Early enteral nutrition support is hypothesized to be helpful in improving this situation, but the exact effects have yet to be studied in depth. AIM: To observe the effect of early enteral nutritional support on postoperative recovery in patients with surgically treated ga

Neuroendocrine neoplasms of gastrointestinal tract and secondary primary synchronous tumors: A systematic review of case reports. Casualty or causality?

BACKGROUND: Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) can arise in most of the epithelial organs of the body and are not a rare condition in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). The presence of NENs in GIT associated with other secondary primary malignancies (SPM) has been considered an exotic event. This study aims to describe the case reports of NENs accompanied by synchronous primary tumors. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We performed a systematic literature search of the databases Scopus, PubMed, Scielo and LILACS to identify case reports that described the presence of NENs in GIT with SPM. 78 case reports wer

Management of adverse events related to endoscopic resection of upper gastrointestinal neoplasms: Review of the literature and recommendations from experts.

Prevention therapy is recommended for lesions >1/2 of the esophageal circumference. Locoregional steroid injection is recommended for lesions >1/2-3/4 of the esophageal circumference and oral steroids are recommended for lesions >1/2 of the subtotal circumference. For lesions of the entire circumference, oral steroid combined with injection steroid is considered. Endoscopic balloon dilatation (EBD) is the first choice of treatment for stricture after esophageal endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). Radical incision and cutting or self-expandable metallic stent can be considered for refractor
