Neuroendocrine tumors (NET) of the gastrointestinal tract are rare and constitute 0.5-1% of all human malignancies. Based on their endocrine secretion, they are functional active or inactive. They are further classified into fore-, mid-, or hindgut tumors. The recently published WHO-classification grouped the tumors according to their tumor size, angioinvasion and Ki-67 index. NET are mainly diagnosed in an advanced tumor stadium because of the paucity of symptoms or when symptoms occur due to endocrine hypersecretion. NET are diagnosed serologically by their hormone secretion and by measuring

Zygomycosis (Mucor- and Entomophtoramycosis) of the gastrointestinal tract is rare compared to other mycoses in the gastrointestinal area. The infection occurs mainly in immunosuppressed patients but rare cases concerning immunocompetent persons are also documented. Zygomycosis occurs in the gastrointestine primarily or due to disseminated disease. We report on a 48-year-old female alcohol-addicted patient who underwent gastric biopsies. The biopsy results showed invasive zygomycosis. Shortly thereafter, the patient died of sepsis. The second case presented here is a 15-year-old female patient

The gastrointestinal (GI) tract plays a central role in the pathogenesis of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies. These are human and animal diseases that include bovine spongiform encephalopathy, scrapie and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. They are uniformly fatal neurological diseases, which are characterized by ataxia and vacuolation in the central nervous system. Although they are known to be caused by the conversion of normal cellular prion protein to its infectious conformational isoform (PrPsc) the process by which this isoform is propagated and transported to the brain remains poorly u

Gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumours are classified as functioning or non-functioning according to the presence or absence of a clinically evident hypersecretion syndrome. In foregut tumours the presence of autonomous hormone secretion and the respective hypersecretion syndrome indicate functionality. Abdominal ultrasound (US), computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance tomography (MRT) and somatostatin receptor scintigraphy (SRS) are used for localisation of the primary tumour and metastasis. Invasive procedures such as endoscopic US, intraoperative US or intraoperative duodenal transill

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Adverse reactions to food resulting in gastrointestinal symptoms are common in the general population. Although only a minority of individuals complaining of such symptoms have immune-mediated reactions to food (food allergy), gastrointestinal food allergies do exist in both children and adults. This review provides an update on the pathogenesis and clinical management of food allergy manifesting in the gut, emphasizing recent developments in the field.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies have broadened our understanding of the innate gastrointestinal defense systems and the ro

The blood supply of the gastrointestinal system has intramural and extramural components. The intramural vascular distribution is generally well developed with plexuses in the different layers of the bowel wall and with specializations in the liver, small intestine and gastroesophageal junction, adapted to the function of these organs. The extramural arterial supply for the oesophagus is derived from the thoracic aorta or its major branches. Blood supply to the abdominal organs is provided by three major unpaired vessels arising from the abdominal aorta, namely the coeliac trunk and the superi

Allergic disorders of the gastrointestinal tract were once thought of as primarily dermatological manifestations of common food allergens such as peanuts. Recently, greater attention to these products has arisen as complex mechanisms of action have been more clearly delineated. Specific disease states have recently been recognized associated with gastrointestinal reactions to foods, such as celiac disease, infantile formula protein intolerance, and eosinophilic gastroenteritis have been well described. More recently, eosinophilic esophagitis and allergic constipation have been described. This

AIMS: The gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is the most common site of extra-nodal lymphoma. Most of these lymphomas arise from mucosa associated lymphoid tissue (MALT). We attempt in this study to define the natural history and treatment outcome of this type of lymphoma.
METHODS: We carried out a retrospective study of patients presenting at our centre with histopathological diagnosis of primary GIT lymphoma between 1990 and 1994.
RESULTS: Equal numbers of cases of stomach and small bowel lymphoma were found. Vomiting and feeling of fullness were the two most common presenting symptoms. Large ce

The morphology and functions of gastrointestinal mast cells (MCs) under physiological and pathological conditions were described. Special attention was paid to the MCs origin, differentiation and morphological and biochemical aspects of their degranulation. Mast cells are important component of normal architecture of the gastrointestinal tract. Many substances released from MCs during degranulation are biologically active and mediate numerous processes: blood flow regulation, epithelial and endothelial permeability, mucosal secretion, gastrointestinal tract motility, immunological events relat

Hodgkin's disease (HD) is rarely considered in the differential diagnosis of gastrointestinal (GI) disorders. We report eight cases of GI HD. The patients, ages 16-64, all with stage IV disease of varied histologic subtypes and GI symptoms including pain, upper or lower GI bleeding and/or obstruction. There was diffuse gastric fold thickening in one case, a large submucosal mass along the proximal greater curvature in another case, and a large ulcerating mass along the lesser curvature in the third case. Two cases of jejunal disease manifested as either a short or long segment of luminal narro

Neoplasms of the upper gastrointestinal tract are generally detected by barium studies or endoscopy. Computed tomography remains the primary imaging modality for staging. Magnetic resonance imaging and endoscopic ultrasonography may also play an increasing role in evaluating these tumors.

Gastrointestinal motility is the function of gastrointestinal smooth muscle. It is controlled by both the intrinsic and extrinsic nerves of the gastrointestinal tract and, to a lesser degree, the gastrointestinal hormones. Therefore, any abnormality of the above factors, theoretically, can cause gastrointestinal dysmotility. In a clinical situation, commonly seen is gastrointestinal dysmotility caused by either smooth muscle or intrinsic and extrinsic nerves dysfunction. Diseases that cause smooth muscle dysfunction include familial visceral myopathies, nonfamilial visceral myopathies, collage

Down Syndrome is recognized as one of the most common predisposing conditions for a group of serious gastrointestinal (GI) anomalies. Tracheo-esophageal fistula, duodenal obstruction with or without pyloric stenosis, annular pancreas, imperforate anus and Hirschsprung's disease are the most prevalent lesions. Understanding of the morphogenetic mechanisms responsible for this range of abnormalities is far from clear, as none of the lesions is specific to the trisomic state and the underlying defects (i.e., failure of foregut canalization, failure of neural crest cell migration into the myenteri

The main function of gut-associated lymphoid tissue is to provide an adaptive protective mechanism to help defend the body from exogenous antigen. This complex function requires the coordination of various cellular elements, including B cells, T cells, macrophages, and the epithelial cells of the gut. The control of this remains poorly defined, but involves various cellular subpopulations, humoral factors acting by autocrine and paracrine means, and cell adhesion molecules regulating tissue tropisms. Disruption of these cybernetic mechanisms is likely to be fundamental to the development and b

Haemangiomas of the gastrointestinal tract are unusual vascular anomalies either in children or in adults. There is a significant difficulty in their diagnosis because of this rarity. However, when they are present, haemangiomas of the gastrointestinal tract may be a source of acute or chronic blood loss and anaemia. The case histories of two children with severe gastrointestinal bleeding due to cavernous haemangioma of the duodenum and caecum are presented in this report. Progressive haemorrhage from the gastrointestinal tract was the indication for operative intervention in both children. Ea

Surgical advice is often sought when a prenatal diagnosis of gastrointestinal tract obstruction is made. We reviewed our experience with 17 such cases during a 4-year period. Eight fetuses had complete proximal obstruction. Seven of the 8 did well after maternal transport to a perinatal center and prompt neonatal surgery. Six fetuses had distal obstruction with dilated bowel and increased peristalsis. Two died after birth (1 with severe associated anomalies and 1 with short-bowel syndrome), and the other 4 did well. Three fetuses had a false-positive diagnosis of in utero meconium peritonitis.

I have reviewed the English language literature on angiodysplasia of the upper gastrointestinal tract. Angiodysplasia is a distinct mucosal vascular lesion associated with acute or chronic gastrointestinal bleeding. Its etiology is unknown, but theories of its pathogenesis have evolved from its similarity to colonic angiodysplasia and an association with renal failure. Despite recurrent gastrointestinal bleeding, the endoscopic diagnosis is difficult because the lesions are so small and so similar to fresh blood. Endoscopic ablation by electrocautery or laser photocoagulation can reduce bleedi

Neoplastic proliferations of neuroendocrine cells (NE) may occur throughout the entire GI tract but affect particularly appendix and ileum ("midgut carcinoids"), rectum ("hindgut carcinoids"), as well as stomach and the duodenum ("foregut carcinoids"). Only more exceptionally, they arise in the esophagus, jejunum and colon. The NE tumors encompass a heterogeneous gross and microscopic structural spectrum, ranging from inconspicuous microproliferations ("mucous membrane nevi") to bulky tumor masses. Their growth patterns are usually characteristic and easily recognized. In doubtful cases their
