This study aimed to identify larval forms of trematodes in Pseudosuccinea columella from rural properties with a history of bovine fasciolosis in the southern region of Espírito Santo, Brazil. A malacological survey was carried out on waterbodies from ten properties between June 2022 and March 2023. Aquatic snails were collected, identified, and evaluated for infection with trematode larvae by artificial photostimulation. The larvae found were morphologically characterized under a light microscope, and samples of the snails were subjected to histological analysis to observe larval trematodes i

BACKGROUND: Two thiarid snail species, Melanoides tuberculata and Tarebia granifera have been reported as first intermediate hosts of the liver fluke Clonorchis sinensis; however, their role as true first intermediate hosts has not been verified. Thus, the present study aimed to clarify the suitability of these two snail species as first intermediate hosts of C. sinensis. This was accomplished by collecting snails from a highly endemic area for C. sinensis in Vietnam, the Thac Ba reservoir, and identifying shed cercariae using molecular techniques. We also conducted experimental infections of

The genital anatomy of Orcula jetschini (Romania), Orcula zilchi (Bulgaria), and Orcula wagneri (Albania) is described. Based on anatomical features (morphology of the penial caecum) shell characters (sculpture and shape) and unpublished molecular data the genus Orcula is subdivided into three subgenera. Orcula zilchi was classified within the monotypic subgenus Orcula (Hausdorfia) subgen. n.; Orcula jetschini, Orcula wagneri, and Orcula schmidtii were classified to Orcula (Illyriobanatica) subgen. n. (type species: Pupa schmidtii) whereas the other Orcula species remain in the nominotypical s

Despite the importance of fish-borne trematodes of the family Opisthorchiidae as causative agents of human liver fluke disease, studies on these parasites outside Asia are relativally scarce. In South America, human focus of amphimerosis is known in Ecuador since the mid-20th century, and Amphimerus spp. have also been reported in wild and domestic mammals. Nevertheless, the knowledge on the snails that act as the first intermediate host of these potentially zoonotic parasites are scarce. Herein, a new cercaria of the pleurolophocercous morphotype found in the freshwater snail Idiopyrgus soule

INTRODUCTION: The genus Biomphalaria in Brazil includes 11 species and one subspecies, three of which are intermediate hosts of Schistosoma mansoni. Due to the recent evolution of this group, some species are difficult to identify based on morphological characters, making the use of genetic markers necessary for species identification. This study aimed to evaluate the use of partial sequences of the cytochrome c oxidase I (coi) gene for the identification of Biomphalaria species using phylogenetic reconstruction and species delimitation algorithms. The study tested the use of DNA barcoding tec

The use of three limpet species, Patella vulgata Linnaeus, 1758, Patella depressa Pennant, 1777 and Patella ulyssiponensis Gmelin, 1791 as model organisms in marine ecotoxicology has been evaluated. Initial laboratory experiments were aimed to standardize a biological test with embryos and larvae of Patella spp, establishing the percentage of normal trochophore larvae as endpoint. Before conducting in vitro fertilization, oocytes must be maturated artificially by incubation in an alkaline solution; therefore, alkalinizing agent, pH and time of eggs alkalinization were evaluated. Moreover, time

The present work contains descriptions of two new species of Landouria and a key to Thai species of this genus. Landouriabella sp. nov. is described from isolated limestone hills in Ratchaburi and Phetchaburi provinces, western Thailand. This new species is characterized by its small depressed-globose shell without a peripheral keel, the presence of a small, thin lamella on the columellar side of the inner aperture, a long, cylindrical distally bent flagellum, a short penis with a rounded verge, and a short, thick free oviduct and vagina. The second new species, Landouriamonodon sp. nov. is de

The lymnaeid snail Pseudosuccinea columella has shown strong invasive capabilities in the last decades, and this species has now a worldwide distribution. So far, the presence of this snail in Europe was restricted to botanical gardens, but the recent discovery of a few specimens along the banks of the Lot River, southwestern France is the first record of this species in the wild. The first generation of this P. columella isolate obtained in the laboratory was used for parasitological tests with a French Fasciola hepatica sample. Experimental infections showed that 100% of snails (n=26) develo

The present geographical distribution of Lymnaea columella, as recorded in the National Freshwater Snail Collection, is described and discussed. It appears that L. columella is the most successful colonist of all the freshwater snail species in South Africa, and, together with Bulinus tropicus and Lymnaea natalensis, it forms the most widely distributed freshwater snail species in the region. Data regarding the 2,341 discovery sites of L. columella recorded by collectors during surveys are analysed. L. columella cluster mainly in rivers or streams with perennial, slow flowing, or stagnant fres

A new species that is putatively assigned to the genus Pseudomphala Heude, 1882 (Truncatelloidea, Assimineidae) and that was collected from the East China Sea is described and illustrated. The new species is characterized by: a shell with subsutural thread, umbilicus covered, a penis without papilla, central teeth of the radula with 4-5 pairs of strong basal cusps laterally, and outer marginal teeth with 6-7 large cusps and a thin flaring flap. Furthermore, Bayesian inference and maximum-likelihood analyses conducted on a partial sequence of the COI mitochondrial fragment have provided additio

BACKGROUND: Gastropod snails remain strongly understudied, despite their important role in transmitting parasitic diseases. Knowledge of their distribution and population dynamics increases our understanding of the processes driving disease transmission. We report the first study to use high-throughput sequencing (HTS) to elucidate the population genetic structure of the hermaphroditic snail Bulinus truncatus (Gastropoda, Heterobranchia) on a regional (17-150 km) and inter-regional (1000-5400 km) scale. This snail species acts as an intermediate host of Schistosoma haematobium and Schistosoma

The radula is the food gathering and processing structure and one important autapomorphy of the Mollusca. It is composed of a chitinous membrane with small, embedded teeth representing the interface between the organism and its ingesta. In the past, various approaches aimed at connecting the tooth morphologies, which can be highly distinct even within single radulae, to their functionality. However, conclusions from the literature were mainly drawn from analyzing mounted radulae, even though the configuration of the radula during foraging is not necessarily the same as in mounted specimens. Macrocypraea mammoth is a new species from Trindade, a remote oceanic island located 1160 km off Espírito Santo, Brazil. This isolated species is described in a detailed morphological scenario that includes all Recent congeneric species. The detailed anatomy of two Recent species, M. zebra and M. cervinetta, were described in a previous paper. The remaining one, M. cervus, is included herein. Brief taxonomical comments on all these species is also included. The new species can be distinguished from other Western Atlantic species by its larger size, proportionally heavier and more solid shell,

The various uses of copper or copper compounds in industrial, biocidal or pesticidal products lead to inputs of the metal into aquatic environments. To assess effects of copper ions on non-target organisms, the freshwater snail Theodoxus fluviatilis was used as test organism for a three-week laboratory experiment. Snails were exposed to four copper concentrations ranging from 4 to 39 µg Cu2+/L, and besides mortality, several sublethal parameters were evaluated. Concerning survival, an aqueous copper concentration of 6 µg/L was determined as NOEC, and 16 (± 0.1) µg/L as LC50. Negative sublethal

Bulinus globosus, a key intermediate host for Schistosoma haematobium that causes urinary schistosomiasis, is a hermaphroditic freshwater Planorbid snail species that inhabits patchy and transient water bodies prone to large seasonal variations in water availability. Although capable of self-fertilizing, this species has been reported to be preferentially out crossing. In this study, we characterized the population genetic structure of 19 B. globosus populations sampled across the Lake Victoria basin and coastal Kenya using four polymorphic microsatellite loci. Population genetic structure was

The prosobranch gastropod Potamopyrgus antipodarum (Gray, 1843) is poorly understood as a parasite host outside its native New Zealand, including in Europe. Our aim was to ascertain whether non-native P. antipodarum could acquire aspidogastrids or digeneans in habitats where these parasites are found in native hosts. We examined 2400 P. antipodarum individuals from Sosno Lake (Poland). The majority of snails were adult females. No males were found. We found five P. antipodarum individuals with Aspidogaster conchicola and 39 snails with metacercariae of Echinoparyphium aconiatum Dietz 1909 or E

BACKGROUND: The present study aims to assess the epidemiological role of different lymnaeid snails as intermediate hosts of the liver fluke Fasciola hepatica in Belgium and Luxembourg.
METHODS: During summer 2008, 7103 lymnaeid snails were collected from 125 ponds distributed in 5 clusters each including 25 ponds. Each cluster was located in a different biogeographic area of Belgium and Luxembourg. In addition, snails were also collected in sixteen other biotopes considered as temporary wet areas. These snails were identified as Galba truncatula (n = 2474) (the main intermediate host of F. he

Freshwater lymnaeid snails are crucial in defining transmission and epidemiology of fascioliasis. In South America, human endemic areas are related to high altitudes in Andean regions. The species Lymnaea diaphana has, however, been involved in low altitude areas of Chile, Argentina and Peru where human infection also occurs. Complete nuclear ribosomal DNA 18S, internal transcribed spacer (ITS)-2 and ITS-1 and fragments of mitochondrial DNA 16S and cytochrome c oxidase (cox)1 genes of L. diaphana specimens from its type locality offered 1,848, 495, 520, 424 and 672 bp long sequences. BACKGROUND: The snail Neotricula aperta transmits Mekong schistosomiasis in southern Laos and Cambodia, with about 1.5 million people at risk of infection. Plans are under consideration for at least 12 hydroelectric power dams on the lower Mekong river and much controversy surrounds predictions of their environmental impacts. Unfortunately, there are almost no ecological data (such as long-term population trend studies) available for N. aperta which could be used in impact assessment. Predictions currently assume that the impacts will be the same as those observed in Africa (i.e., a worsening
