Studies were performed with an inactivated vaccine against the mosquito-borne flavivirus, West Nile virus (WNV). The mammalian cell line, PER.C6, was selected as the platform for WNV growth since both the neurovirulent strains NY99 and ISR98 that cause epidemics in humans and high mortality in geese, respectively, could be propagated to high titers (10(9) to 10(10)TCID(50)/ml) on these cells. Based on the high DNA homology of the WNV envelope (E) protein and non-structural protein 5 (NS5), and identical neurovirulence in mice and geese, we concluded that NY99 and ISR98 viruses are closely rela

This study examined the effects of dietary crude protein (CP) level and starch: fat ratio (SFR) on glucose and lipid metabolism in geese. A total of 360 male Jiangnan White geese were allocated to a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement with two CP levels (14.5% and 16.5%) and three SFRs (SFR20:1, SFR11:1, and SFR5:1) from 28 to 63 days of age. Under the low-protein condition, Both the SFR11:1 and SFR5:1 group enhanced body weight of geese at 63 d, but SFR 5:1 increased subcutaneous and abdominal fat deposition. Dietary SFR changed liver cholesterol metabolism and glycogen content, while CP levels mainl

The global expansion of renewable energy is a key societal objective but may conflict with nature conservation interests by causing habitat loss. Hence, planning energy infrastructure requires a thorough understanding of the behavior and habitat requirements of affected species during critical phases of the annual cycle. We assessed the energetic consequences of losing agricultural foraging habitat for a wintering goose species with a high degree of site-fidelity. Proposed renewable energy developments, specifically wind turbines and solar panels, pose a risk of losing winter cereal fields, wh

BACKGROUND: The avian pelvis is known to differ in shape between males and females due to the need for females to lay eggs, with egg shape correlating to pelvic shape. Geese breeding is done as an alternative to the poultry sector in our country for meat and, to a lesser extent, eggs. However, in recent years, there has been an increase in the number of those who are breeding geese as large enterprises. Understanding the anatomical structure of geese is essential. With 3D-modeling studies the use of artificial intelligence has increased and thus artificial intelligence has taken its place in t

This study aimed to determine the prevalence, and the genomic characteristics of beta-lactamase-Resistant Escherichia coli isolated from the feces of migratory geese at one health interface in West Texas. A descriptive study was conducted. We collected geese feces (n = 165), water (n = 118), and soil (n = 74) from 22 recreational parks in West Texas. We used Chromogenic agar to isolate extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-Resistant-E. coli. We used the whole genome sequencing (WGS) method to determine the genomic characteristics of selected E. coli isolates. Among 357 samples, 12.61 % (95 %

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is commonly found in feed ingredients and foods all over the world, posing a significant threat to food safety and public health in animals and humans. Lactobacillus salivarius (L. salivarius) was recorded to improve the intestinal health and performance of chickens. However, whether L. salivarius can alleviate AFB1-induced hepatotoxicity in geese was unknown. A total of 300 Lande geese were randomly assigned to five groups: control group, AFB1 low-dose group (L), L. salivarius+AFB1 low-dose group (LL), AFB1 high dosage groups (H), L. salivarius+AFB1 high dosage groups (LH)

Bile acids(BAs) are important components of bile and play a significant role in fat metabolism. However, there is currently no systematic evaluation of the use of BAs as feed additives for geese. This study aimed to investigate the effects of adding BAs to goose feed on growth performance, lipid metabolism, intestinal morphology, mucosal barrier function, and cecal microbiota. A total of 168 28-day-old geese were randomly assigned to four treatment groups and fed diets supplemented with 0, 75, 150, or 300 mg/kg of BAs for 28 days. The addition of 75 and 150 mg/kg of BAs significantly improved t

West Nile virus (WNV) is an emerging infectious pathogen circulating between mosquitoes and birds but also infecting mammals. WNV has become autochthonous in Germany, causing striking mortality rates in avifauna and occasional diseases in humans and horses. We therefore wanted to assess the possible role of free-ranging poultry in the WNV transmission cycle and infected 15 goslings with WNV lineage 2 (German isolate). The geese were monitored daily and sampled regularly to determine viremia, viral shedding, and antibody development by molecular and serological methods. Geese were euthanized at

BACKGROUND: Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play an important role in the regulation of sperm motility and are involved in maintaining sperm functions by influencing processes such as spermatogenesis, metabolism, motility, and the response to oxidative stress. In this study, transcriptome sequencing technology was used to perform lncRNA sequencing on the testes of Yili geese with high and low sperm motility. Combined with bioinformatics analysis, RT-qPCR and other detection techniques, this study deeply explored and identified the genes and lncRNA functions that affect the sperm motility of Yil

Goose astrovirus genotype 2 (GAstV-2), a member of the Avastrovirus (AAstV) genus, is an important emerging pathogen closely associated with gosling gout that has caused enormous economic losses to the goose industry since it was first reported in 2015 in China. However, public GAstV-2 sequencing data remain scarce (with only 278 records to date), and its genetic evolution, pathogenic features, and cross-species transmission potential have not been fully elucidated. To address this gap, we isolated 12 GAstV-2 strains from clinical samples of gout-affected goslings in Shandong and Guangdong Pro

The emergence and circulation of duck reovirus have caused severe threats to domestic waterfowl production because of the lethal infections they cause in ducks and geese. However, the evolution of circulating duck reoviruses and their replication and pathogenicity in domestic birds have not been fully investigated. In this study, we identified and isolated six duck reoviruses from clinical samples of sick or deceased farmed ducks and geese and sequenced their full genomes. Phylogenetic analysis revealed the evolutionary landscape of duck reoviruses and the complex reassortment of these circula

Avian reovirus (ARV) is a cause of infections of broiler and turkey flocks, as well as waterfowl birds. This case report describes a reovirus detection in a fattening goose flock. GRV-infected geese suffer from severe arthritis, tenosynovitis, pericarditis, depressed growth, or runting-stunting syndrome (RSS), malabsorption syndrome, and respiratory and enteric diseases. GRV (goose reovirus) caused pathological lesions in various organs and joints, especially in the liver and spleen. GRV infection causes splenic necrosis, which induces immunosuppression, predisposing geese to infection with ot

A total of 240 samples were evaluated for the presence of Campylobacter spp. Campylobacter was found in 83.3% of the cecum contents samples and 52.5% of the neck skin samples from carcasses. The prevailing species was C. jejuni, accounting for 87.7% of all Campylobacter isolates, and the remaining 12.3% of isolates were C. coli. All Campylobacter isolates, independent of the sample origin and species, were positive for 6 out of 15 tested genes (flaA, flhA, cadF, racR, ciaB, and cdtA genes). The prevalence of dnaJ, docA, pldA, cdtB, cdtC, and iam genes was also very common (ranging from 86.5% t

An in-situ hybridization (ISH) procedure was developed for the detection of Cryptosporidium sp. in paraffin wax-embedded tissues with a digoxigenin-labelled probe targeting the 18S rRNA. This technique was used in addition to traditional methods, such as haematoxylin and eosin staining, periodic acid-Schiff reaction, transmission electron microscopy and the polymerase chain reaction, to examine the bursa of Fabricius (BF), conjunctiva and other tissues from 20 domestic geese aged 16-36 days for the presence of cryptosporidia. Positive signals were found to a moderate or marked extent in both c
