Gender representation and visibility of women in top-rated Netflix original films: A 2025 streaming media analysis.

This study evaluated the effect of increasing the critical value threshold for hyponatremia combined with systematic intervention on sodium regulation in patients undergoing myomectomy. A retrospective analysis was performed. Patients who underwent myomectomy and received conventional care between March 2014 and March 2019 (n=844) served as the reference group (threshold: 120 mmol/L), while those treated between March 2019 and March 2024 (n=1385) formed the observation group. In the observation group, the hyponatremia critical threshold was raised to 129 mmol/L, alongside targeted intervention

The global decline in sexism: A multilevel meta-analytic review of trends in countries' hostile sexism, benevolent sexism, and gender inequality over time.

The continued prevalence of sexism and gender inequalities across the world is a priority for research. We meta-analyzed all research since the inception of ambivalent sexism theory (1996-2023) that measured hostile sexism (i.e., derogatory attitudes) or benevolent sexism (i.e., patronizing attitudes) toward women. Using 1,097 samples from 81 countries, we considered evidence for principles of ambivalent sexism theory, including the extent to which endorsements of hostile sexism and benevolent sexism (a) differed across years, (b) were associated with one another, and (c) were associated with

When egalitarianism legitimizes inequality: Implications for gender disparities in organizations.

Stibbard-Hawkes and von Rueden's process-based account of egalitarianism provides a powerful framework for understanding how egalitarian systems coexist with inequality. Extending this perspective to modern organizations, we argue that such processes may inadvertently legitimize gender disparities. Equality initiatives that rely on moral signaling alone are insufficient; effective interventions must counterbalance the self-interested dynamics through which status and opportunity are allocated.

Gender sensitive approach in response to climate change: Why and how?

Global gender inequalities are intensifying, driven by intersecting social, political, and environmental pressures. Recent evidence shows that women bear a disproportionate burden of poverty, food insecurity, poor health, and gender-based violence. Climate change further compounds these vulnerabilities, threatening to reverse hard-won gains in gender equality, particularly in fragile and low-resource settings. Without urgent, gender-responsive and climate-informed action, millions more women and girls risk being pushed into extreme poverty in the coming decades.

"A girl is the champion!": Well-intentioned gendered messages can backfire.

Initiatives aimed at promoting gender equity in majority-male domains often emphasize gender to highlight women's achievements (e.g., "Space4Women," "all-women spacewalk"). Does such gendered messaging help achieve equity goals? Two theoretical accounts offer competing predictions. An informational account suggests that referencing a gender alongside a domain should strengthen beliefs that the referenced gender participates and succeeds. A pragmatic account, however, predicts that explicitly marking gender may backfire by signaling that the referenced gender is atypical in the domain-otherwise

Linguistic equity: Anatomy educators and inclusive language.

Incorporating inclusive language in healthcare education allows learners to develop holistic communication skills. Adhering to principles of linguistic equity in healthcare, specific to sex- and gender-inclusive language (SGIL), creates a safe environment for all participants. Anatomy education introduces students to a standard, consistent language used in healthcare. This report presents data from the 2022 Experimental Biology conference roundtable discussion regarding the use of SGIL in anatomy education. Most of the respondents had defined sex (i.e. male/female; 83%) and gender (i.e. man/wo

Bodies that Pay the Price: Institutional Ahistoricity and Persistent Gendered Marginality in Indian Medical Education.

Despite obstetric violence inflicted upon marginal female bodies by the Indian medical system being well-documented through the decades, the exploration of the historical production of this attitude has received limited attention. However, the present modes of violences are deeply rooted in a history of culturally-transmitted medicolegal anxiety about unwanted bodies on a shared planet, and their unwanted medicosocial behavior - in particular their reproductive choices. This history of anxiety, unwritten but encoded in multiple implicit and explicit ways, has shaped contemporary medical instit

Disparity in female and Asian representation amongst cardiology journal editorial boards members: a call for empowerment.

BACKGROUND: While progress is evident in gender and ethnic representation in the workplace, this disparity remains prevalent in academic positions. OBJECTIVES: We examined gender and Asian ethnic representation in editorial boards of cardiology journals. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using publicly available data on Cardiology and Cardiovascular medicine journals in the first quartile of the 2020 Scimago Journal & Country Rank indicator. The proportions of female and Asian editorial board members, associate editors and editors-in-chief were assessed. Subgroup analyses wer

Advancing Gender Equality in Australian Healthcare Leadership: Why National Targets Matter and What It Means for Healthcare Employers.

Women comprise the majority of Australia's healthcare workforce yet remain underrepresented in leadership. This structural inequity has direct consequences for workforce sustainability and patient outcomes. Australia's new gender equality target-setting requirements, which create binding obligations for large employers, including major healthcare services, offer a timely mechanism to address this structural inequity. In this article, we explain why gender equality targets matter for healthcare, outline who must comply and what is required and describe how health services and training settings

Country-level gender inequality is associated with structural differences in the brains of women and men.

Gender inequality across the world has been associated with a higher risk to mental health problems and lower academic achievement in women compared to men. We also know that the brain is shaped by nurturing and adverse socio-environmental experiences. Therefore, unequal exposure to harsher conditions for women compared to men in gender-unequal countries might be reflected in differences in their brain structure, and this could be the neural mechanism partly explaining women's worse outcomes in gender-unequal countries. We examined this through a random-effects meta-analysis on cortical thickn

Expanding focus: reimagining and broadening women's leadership programs in academic medicine.

In light of increasing legislation aimed at prohibiting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts at publicly funded universities in the United States, women-only leadership programs (WOLPs) have come under increasing pressure, which could undermine gender equity advancements, particularly in academic medicine. Women-only leadership programs have traditionally offered a unique advantage for women over mixed-gender leadership programs by fostering psychologically safe spaces to share experiences, teaching leadership competencies while using a gender equity lens in areas where it makes sens

Equity in clinical trials for HIV-associated cryptococcal meningitis: A systematic review of global representation and inclusion of patients and researchers.

BACKGROUND: It is essential that clinical trial participants are representative of the population under investigation. Using HIV-associated cryptococcal meningitis (CM) as a case study, we conducted a systematic review of clinical trials to determine how inclusive and representative they were both in terms of the affected population and the involvement of local investigators. METHODS: We searched Medline, EMBASE, Cochrane, Africa-Wide, CINAHL Plus, and Web of Science. Data were extracted for 5 domains: study location and design, screening, participants, researchers, and funders. Data were sum

What about the men? Gender parity in occupational therapy: Qu'en est-il des hommes? La parité hommes-femmes en ergothérapie.

BACKGROUND: Gender parity is frequently raised as an equity issue in occupational therapy, with strategies proposed to recruit more men. PURPOSE: This article explores whether this is a legitimate equity concern. KEY ISSUES: Most employment is gender segregated; when gender balances change, the field either re-genders feminine or creates gender-segregated internal divisions. Men avoid feminized jobs because they pay less and hold less social status. They are a "step down" for men. In such jobs, men are disproportionately pushed into management positions, with better pay, more prestige, and l

From interest to advancement: confronting structural inequities facing women in spine surgery.

Women remain significantly underrepresented in spine surgery. Despite growing diversity among medical school matriculants, spine surgery continues to lag behind other specialties in recruiting, retaining, and promoting women across all stages of training and professional advancement. This perspective examines the structural inequities contributing to these disparities, including limited early exposure to the field, lack of mentorship, challenges related to family planning and pregnancy, occupational hazards, and pervasive gendered expectations surrounding work-life integration. We discuss how

Legislation for advancing women's leadership in the health sector in India and Kenya: a 'law cube' approach to identify ways to strengthen legal environments for gender equality.

OBJECTIVES: This paper examines the availability of legal provisions, or the lack thereof, that support women to progress equitably into leadership positions within the health workforce in India and Kenya. METHODS: We adapted the World Bank's Women, Business and Law framework of legal domains relevant to gender equality in the workplace and applied a 'law cube' to analyse the comprehensiveness, accountability and equity and human rights considerations of 27 relevant statutes in India and 11 in Kenya that apply to people in formal employment within the health sector. We assessed those laws aga

Women's health and well-being over the life course: conceptual framing supported by a scoping review.

UNLABELLED: As a framework to conceptualise well-being, the capability approach (CA) combines structural drivers with personal freedoms, making it a compelling approach for understanding women's health and well-being (WHW). The WHW Project of the Exemplars in Global Health initiative chose the CA for its conceptual framing, while emphasising the influential role of gender and other intersecting inequalities (intersectional gender inequality) in shaping health and well-being over the life course. We discuss the Exemplars in Global Health - Women's Health and Well-being (EGH-WHW) Framework and a

Text Analysis of Trends in Health Equity and Disparities From the Internal Revenue Service Tax Documentation Submitted by US Nonprofit Hospitals Between 2010 and 2019: Exploratory Study.

BACKGROUND: Many US hospitals are classified as nonprofits and receive tax-exempt status partially in exchange for providing benefits to the community. Proof of compliance is collected with the Schedule H form submitted as part of the annual Internal Revenue Service Form 990 (F990H), including a free-response text section that is known for being ambiguous and difficult to audit. This research is among the first to use natural language processing approaches to evaluate this text section with a focus on health equity and disparities.
