Boredom Proneness and Online Deviant Behaviors: The Mediating Role of Rumination and the Moderating Role of Gender.

Online deviant behaviors have received increasing attention. This study examined the association between boredom proneness and online deviant behaviors as well as the mediating role of rumination and the moderating role of gender in the relationship. A sample of 1001 college students (Mage = 20.20 ± 1.52 years, 50.25% female) was recruited to complete a set of questionnaires assessing the main variables. The results show that boredom proneness was positively associated with online deviant behaviors and that rumination played a mediating role in this relationship. Moreover, gender differences w

Self-Compassion and Reactions to a Recalled Exercise Lapse: The Moderating Role of Gender-Role Schemas.

Exercise is good for health and well-being, yet people experience lapses when trying to adhere to exercise. Self-compassion may help people cope with exercise lapses. Most research on self-compassion and exercise has been conducted with women; men may also benefit from self-compassion. No research has examined whether gender-role schema influences responses to exercise lapses. The authors examined both male and female adult exercisers (N = 220) who reported their self-compassion, recalled an exercise lapse, their reactions to the lapse, and their self-identification of masculinity and feminini

Childhood family attachment and physical abuse: the moderating role of gender.

Childhood physical abuse has lasting implications for individual well-being, yet empirical evidence on protective family factors and their gendered effects during emerging adulthood remains limited. This study offers novel insight by examining gender as a moderating factor in the relationship between childhood family attachment and childhood physical abuse among emerging adults. The objective of this study is to assess whether stronger childhood family attachment reduces experiences of childhood physical abuse and to determine whether this protective effect differs by gender. Data were collect

The role of reciprocity and gender in dementia caregiving on abusive and neglectful behaviors.

OBJECTIVES: Reciprocity, a balanced exchange in interactions, is a crucial element of social exchanges and impacts caregiving outcomes. This paper aims to investigate whether perceived reciprocity plays a protective role against older adult abuse and neglect and to explore gender variations associated with this relationship. METHODS: A sample of 453 family caregivers reported daily perceptions of reciprocity in a 21-day micro-longitudinal study. Perceived reciprocity was measured by the participant's level of satisfaction with the amount of affection/appreciation shown by their relative with

The role of the surgical robot in gender-affirming surgery: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Gender-affirming surgery is a growing field to address gender dysphoria, which is an increasingly recognized condition. The surgical robot is an excellent tool for performing some gender-affirming procedures and has been utilized extensively in both feminizing and masculinizing surgery. OBJECTIVES: To provide an overview for the use of the surgical robot in gender-affirming surgeries. DESIGN: This is a scoping review. METHODS: A literature search was conducted by the authors via PubMed and Google Scholar. RESULTS: The ability of the robot to operate within the pelvis makes it a

Alcohol Dependence and Quality of Life: Role of Gender and Psychiatric Comorbidities.

To address the lack of studies on the impact of gender and psychiatric comorbidities on alcohol dependence (AD) and quality of life (QoL), we conducted a cross-sectional study. We compared QoL between 328 men and 86 women with AD, and 215 healthy men and 120 women. Additionally, we examined the association of alcohol-related variables and psychiatric comorbidity with the QoL of men and women with AD while controlling for sociodemographic variables. A structured clinical interview for sociodemographic and alcohol-related variables, Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (M.I.N.I.), and W

The Role of Defendant Gender and PTSD Diagnosis in a Battered Spouse Case.

A quarter of women and 11% of men report being survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV) during their lifetimes in the United States. Despite being victims themselves, people who kill their IPV abuser can still be subject to criminal proceedings. Given this complexity, the law has employed battered spouse syndrome (BSS) as a tool used in some jurisdictions to support a claim that an IPV survivor killed in self-defense. A defendant who is attempting to claim self-defense using BSS may introduce testimony of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, a diagnosis of PTSD can pose problems

In the Footsteps of Teiresias: Treatment for Gender Dysphoria in Children and the Role of the Courts.

The Family Court of Australia has stepped back from a previously perceived need for involvement in the approval of stage 1 and stage 2 treatments, for children requiring gender transformation. At present those children and their families who are in agreement need not seek authorisation of the Family Court to undertake either Stage 1 (pubarche blockade with gonadotrophin-releasing hormone agonists) or Stage 2 treatment (cross-hormone therapy such as oestrogen for transgender males). Stage 1 treatment to suppress pubarche would nowadays be commenced at Tanner stage 2 which commences as early as

Disgust-Related Olfactory Processing: The Role of Gender and Trait Disgust.

For the rejection of disgusting and potentially health-threatening food, the sense of smell plays a critical role. We conducted two experiments in order to investigate the role of gender and trait disgust (the temporally stable tendency to experience disgust across different situations) on disgust-related olfactory processing. A total of 40 men and women (Study 1), as well as a group of women divided according to high versus low trait disgust (Study 2, n = 59), were compared with regard to their odor thresholds for carbon disulfide (which smells like spoiled food) and a control stimulus ( n-bu

The role of gender in single vs married individuals with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Despite the importance of marriage as a source of social support, it has been largely neglected in studies of bipolar disorder; and differential effects on men and women have not been explored. METHODS: Data on episodes of depression, mania, and mixed states were collected for the previous 2 years from a sample of 282 bipolar individuals using the National Institute of Mental Health Life Chart Methodology. RESULTS: Effects unique to women included the following: Bipolar women were significantly more likely to be married. Married women had fewer episodes of depression during the p

Role of gender and pubertal stage on cough sensitivity in childhood and adolescence.

Studies in healthy adult volunteers and patients with chronic cough have shown that women have increased cough sensitivity to inhaled tussigenic stimuli, including capsaicin. The explanation for this phenomenon remains unknown, although the influence of pubertal changes (dimensional, hormonal) may play a role. In the present study we set out to examine the effect of the pubertal status on cough reflex sensitivity in a population of male and female children and adolescents. The study consisted of cough reflex sensitivity (CRS) testing, spirometry, and a children-completed pubertal status questi

Adolescents' attitudes toward gender roles and women's empowerment in Oman.

This study investigated the attitudes of Omani adolescents towards gender roles and women's empowerment in taking household decisions, and the determinants of their positive attitudes. A national representative secondary school-based sample of 1670 boys and 1675 girls completed a self-administrated questionnaire with 2 indices: Adolescents' Attitudes Towards Gender Roles and Adolescents' Attitudes Towards Women's Empowerment. Other questions included demographic data, risk behaviour lifestyle, proxies to mental health and social environments expected to predict attitudes towards gender role. E

Contribution of sex-linked biology and gender roles to disparities with trachoma.

Globally, trachoma is the leading infectious cause of blindness. Survey data consistently show that trachoma-related blindness is two to four times higher in women than men. Tracing the increased risk for trachoma and its consequences for women suggests that other factors besides biology may contribute. Understanding the reasons for the excess risk for and consequences of trachoma in girls and women requires examining a number of issues: Are girls and women more biologically susceptible to the consequences of infection with Chlamydia trachomatis? Could other factors help explain the excess of

Cynical hostility, depression, and obesity: the moderating role of education and gender.

OBJECTIVE: We examined how education and gender moderate the association of obesity with cynical hostility and depression. METHOD: Body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), years of education, cynical hostility (CynDis), depression (Beck Depression Inventory) were examined in a cross-sectional study of 1,547 men and 1,814 women, aged 25-64. RESULTS: Education moderates the positive association between cynical distrust and obesity among women in a such way that cynical distrust was not related to BMI or WHR among highly educated women. Depression had a positive association with WHR aft

Sexual differentiation of gonadotrophin secretion, sexual orientation and gender role behavior.

The positive estrogen feedback was found to be a relatively sex-specific reaction of the hypothalamo-hypophyseal system in rats as well as in human beings. It is dependent--most of all--on the estrogen convertible androgen level during sexual brain differentiation, but also on an estrogen priming effect in adulthood. The lower the estrogen convertible androgen or primary estrogen level during brain differentiation, the higher is the evocability of a positive estrogen action on LH secretion in later life. In clinical studies, we were able to induce a positive estrogen feedback on LH secretion i

Gender Role, Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation in CAIS ("XY-Women") Compared With Subfertile and Infertile 46,XX Women.

The perception of gender development of individuals with complete androgen insensitivity syndrome (CAIS) as unambiguously female has recently been challenged in both qualitative data and case reports of male gender identity. The aim of the mixed-method study presented was to examine the self-perception of CAIS individuals regarding different aspects of gender and to identify commonalities and differences in comparison with subfertile and infertile XX-chromosomal women with diagnoses of Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome (MRKHS) and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The Role of Drill Instructors and Gender Integration at Recruit Training: Examining Intersections of Gender and Integration in the Recruit Training Environment.

INTRODUCTION: Drill instructors (DIs) are responsible for executing their Services' recruit training programs and for training recruits. DIs assume a variety of roles, including teaching and developing practical skills and knowledge, mentoring, modeling appropriate behavior and attitudes, motivating recruits for success during and after recruit training, applying and instilling discipline, and ensuring the safety and welfare of recruits. This article examines two major research questions at the intersection of gender, gender-integrated training, and the DI role: (1) What differences exist in h

The influence of child gender role and maternal feedback to child stress on the emergence of the gender difference in depressive rumination in adolescence.

Extensive research has linked a greater female tendency to ruminate about depressed feelings or mood to the gender difference in depression. However, the developmental origins of the gender difference in depressive rumination are not well understood. We hypothesized that girls and women may be more likely to ruminate because rumination represents a gender-stereotyped coping style that is associated with a more feminine gender role identity, maternal encouragement of emotion expression, and passive coping responses to stress. This study examined whether child self-reported gender role identity
