[The characteristics of the development of an adaptation syndrome in severe gestosis].

Basic metabolic pathways were studied of formation of the adaptive syndrome in the organism of patients with grave gestoses: glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, and pentosephosphate pathway of production of nicotinamide coenzymes. It has been found out that a stressful character of reconstruction of metabolic homeostasis tends to change the processes of glycolysis and gluconeogenesis that had come to be formed by evolution. This warrants further study, its purpose being a specific correction of intracellular metabolism and prevention of complications. Ozonohemo- and antioxidant therapy in a complex o

Anomalous brain functional connectivity contributing to poor adaptive behavior in Down syndrome.

Research in Down syndrome has substantially progressed in the understanding of the effect of gene overexpression at the molecular level, but there is a paucity of information on the ultimate consequences on overall brain functional organization. We have assessed the brain functional status in Down syndrome using functional connectivity MRI. Resting-state whole-brain connectivity degree maps were generated in 20 Down syndrome individuals and 20 control subjects to identify sites showing anomalous synchrony with other areas. A subsequent region-of-interest mapping served to detail the anomalies

Systems redox biology in health and disease.

Living organisms need to be able to cope with environmental challenges and other stressors and mount adequate responses that are as varied as the spectrum of those challenges. Understanding how the multi-layered biological stress responses become integrated across and between different levels of organization within an organism can provide a different perspective on the nature and inter-relationship of complex systems in health and disease. We here compare two concepts which have been very influential in stress research: Selye's 'General Adaptation Syndrome' and Sies's 'Oxidative Stress' paradi

Adaptive, behavioral, and emotional outcomes following postoperative pediatric cerebellar mutism syndrome in survivors treated for medulloblastoma.

OBJECTIVE: Patients who experience postoperative pediatric cerebellar mutism syndrome (CMS) during treatment for medulloblastoma have long-term deficits in neurocognitive functioning; however, the consequences on functional or adaptive outcomes are unknown. The purpose of the present study was to compare adaptive, behavioral, and emotional functioning between survivors with and those without a history of CMS. METHODS: The authors examined outcomes in 45 survivors (15 with CMS and 30 without CMS). Comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations, which included parent-report measures of adaptive,

Family adaptation in families of individuals with Down syndrome from 12 countries.

Our current understanding of adaptation in families of individuals with Down syndrome (DS) is based primarily on findings from studies focused on participants from a single country. Guided by the Resiliency Model of Family Stress, Adjustment, and Adaptation, the purpose of this cross-country investigation, which is part of a larger, mixed methods study, was twofold: (1) to compare family adaptation in 12 countries, and (2) to examine the relationships between family variables and family adaptation. The focus of this study is data collected in the 12 countries where at least 30 parents complete

Stressful conditions of work: the participative ergonomics approach.

The nature of working stress requires a multi-disciplinary approach for its study. Ergonomics, by its nature multidisciplinary, takes a perspective in which the individual is central and the work and working environment represent the influences to be adjusted. This perspective considers human capacities to have a permissible range of values, within which work demands must be matched. Work demands are more than the physical or mental loads directly related to task performance, since the organisational structure imposes loads. These arise, inter alia, from the relative match between the organisa

Broadly defined risk mental states during adolescence: disorganization mediates positive schizotypal expression.

While schizotypal features are common during adolescence, they can also signal increased risk for the onset of schizophreniform disorders. Most studies with adolescents find that hallucination and delusion-like symptoms (positive schizotypal features) best predict future psychopathology. Still, the developmental process of positive schizotypy remains elusive, specifically with regards to 1) its relationships to negative and disorganization schizotypal dimensions; 2) its associations to maladaptive functioning during adolescence. This longitudinal study aimed to further characterize these relat

Twenty years' research on peer victimization and psychosocial maladjustment: a meta-analytic review of cross-sectional studies.

Cross-sectional quantitative designs are often used to investigate whether peer victimization is positively related to psychosocial maladjustment. This paper presents a meta-analytic review of cross-sectional studies, published between 1978 and 1997, of the association of peer victimization with psychosocial maladjustment. Mean effect sizes were calculated for the association between peer victimization and each form of maladjustment (depression, loneliness, generalized and social anxiety, and global and social self-worth) assessed. The results suggested that victimization is most strongly rela

Using community syndromic surveillance to anticipate enterovirus-related school class suspensions: A real-time LSTM approach.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to develop a district-level early warning framework using a long short-term memory (LSTM) model with adaptive thresholds to detect abnormal enterovirus-like (EV-like) syndrome activity from clinic-based surveillance data and assess its ability to identify aberrations earlier than the onset of class suspension events in Taipei. METHODS: Daily counts of EV-like syndrome cases and preschool and primary school class suspension records (2022-2025) were analyzed at the district level. LSTM models forecasted EV-like syndrome activity 14 days in advance using a 30-day loo

Controversies about the use of antidepressants in pregnancy.

There is controversy about the use of antidepressant medication during pregnancy. Decisions about their use are affected by understanding the risks of these medications causing pregnancy loss, congenital malformations, neonatal adaptation syndrome, persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn, autism spectrum disorder, or long-term neurocognitive deficits. Although some research has raised concerns about antidepressants causing harm to the fetus and neonate, other studies have disputed these findings or noted that any risks found do not exceed the risk of congenital problems found in 1% to

[Value and characteristics of physical medicine and health resort medicine in advanced age].

Physical medicine and spa medicine both have the impetus of rehabilitation in common. In addition, they share the therapeutical orientation toward the performance capacity of organs and functional systems, as well as to activities of daily living, the consideration of chronobiological rules of training and adaptation, and an acknowledging of the fact that diseases and, therefore, the basics of rehabilitation are constantly changing. With increasing age the relation of therapy to function resp. rehabilitation becomes increasingly important. Gerontorehabilitation is distinguished from general re

The safety of duloxetine during pregnancy and lactation.

Depression is common in women, especially during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Untreated depression is associated with many adverse gestational outcomes. It is therefore important to know about the safety of different antidepressant drugs during pregnancy and lactation so that informed decisions can be made regarding treatment. This article summarizes published literature on the subject with regard to duloxetine, an antidepressant with serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibition properties. In general, it appears that the use of duloxetine during pregnancy is associated with an increas

[Genetic tumor risk syndromes : Human genetic aspects for radiologists].

BACKGROUND: Most malignant diseases develop sporadically. However, a significant proportion of cancers are based on genetic predispositions. In this case, cancer develops as a result of causal germline variants. In general, the associated diseases are called genetic tumor risk syndromes or cancer predisposition syndromes. Recognition of these syndromes is in the interest of those affected, as well as of their relatives, as this may have influence on immediate therapy or aftercare. In the course, risk-adapted surveillance or risk-reducing operations may be indicated. CLINICAL IMPACT: Taking in

Highlighting the trajectory from intrauterine growth restriction to future obesity.

During the last decades several lines of evidence reported the association of an adverse intrauterine environment, leading to intrauterine restriction, with future disease, such as obesity and metabolic syndrome, both leading to increased cardiovascular and cancer risk. The underlying explanation for this association has firstly been expressed by the Barker's hypothesis, the "thrifty phenotype hypothesis". According to this hypothesis, a fetus facing an adverse intrauterine environment adapts to this environment through a reprogramming of its endocrine-metabolic status, during the crucial wind

Some Topical Aspects of the "Sports Heart" Problem. Literature Review. Part 2.

Electrocardiography occupies a special place among a significant list of other methods for diagnosing the pathology of the cardiovascular system of athletes. Often its results differ significantly from those in the general population, being a consequence of the adaptation of the heart to economical functioning at rest and super-intensive work in training and competitions. This review focuses on the features of the "athlete's electrocardiogram (ECG)." In particular, those changes that are not a reason for removing athletes from physical activity, but in combination with known factors can lead t

Decreased brain activation to tongue movements in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis with bulbar involvement but not Kennedy syndrome.

Neuroimaging studies in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) investigating movements of the hands have in general found increased activation compared to healthy controls, which has been interpreted in terms of cortical adaptation as a result of corticospinal tract damage. Here, we investigated brain activations to vertical tongue movements using functional MRI at 3 tesla. Whereas healthy controls, patients with Kennedy syndrome, and ALS patients without bulbar involvement showed robust and indistinguishable activations in pre- and postcentral areas and the thalamus, ALS patients with bulbar inv
