Naming, the formation of stimulus classes, and applied behavior analysis.

The methods used in Sidman's original studies on equivalence classes provide a framework for analyzing functional verbal behavior. Sidman and others have shown how teaching receptive, name-referent matching may produce rudimentary oral reading and word comprehension skills. Eikeseth and Smith (1992) have extended these findings by showing that children with autism may acquire equivalence classes after learning to supply a common oral name to each stimulus in a potential class. A stimulus class analysis suggests ways to examine (a) the problem of programming generalization from teaching situati

Effects of opiates on the discriminative stimulus properties of dopamine agonists.

Two groups of rats were trained to discriminate the dopamine agonists amphetamine (0.75 mg/kg) or apomorphine (0.38 mg/kg) from saline in a two-lever operant task. Various doses of morphine and pentazocine were tested for generalization to and interference with the discriminative stimulus complexes produced by the dopamine agonists. Low doses of morphine appeared to produce a stimulus complex which is similar to that produced by apomorphine, but which differs from the produced by amphetamine. Pentazocine showed no evidence of generalization to either the apomorphine or the amphetamine cue. Nei

Assessing stimulus control in natural settings: an analysis of stimuli that acquire control during training.

When a learner is taught a new response, the stimuli that influence its display are often unknown. The presence or absence of these stimuli alters the probability of occurrence of the response. By identifying the stimuli influencing the probability of newly acquired responses, interventionists may program for their generalization more effectively and efficiently. This investigation describes the application of an operant methodology to assess functional relationships between responses and specific stimulus variables. Four young adults with moderate mental retardation were taught to include "pl

An examination of isomeric phenylpropanolamines in (-)ephedrine-trained rats.

A total of eight isomeric phenylpropanolamines are possible when the terminal amine is either an N-monomethylamine or a primary amine: (-)ephedrine, (+)ephedrine, (+)pseudoephedrine, (-)pseudoephedrine, (-)norephedrine, (+)norephedrine, (+)cathine, and (-)cathine. Few previous studies have examined the individual optical isomers of these phenylpropanolamines and, with the exception of one report on locomotor effects, no comparative behavioral data have been published on this series of agents. Using rats trained to discriminate 4 mg/kg of (-)ephedrine (i.p.) from saline vehicle using standard o

Effects of pyrazolopyridines and a triazolopyridazine on the pentobarbital discriminative stimulus.

Rats were trained to discriminate injections of racemic pentobarbital (5.0 mg/kg) from saline in a two-lever drug discrimination task. After stable discrimination performance was attained, stimulus generalization studies were conducted with another barbiturate (barbital), benzodiazepine derivatives (diazepam and chlordiazepoxide), pyrazolopyridine derivatives (etazolate, cartazolate, and tracazolate), and a triazolopyridazine (CL 218, 872). The pentobarbital stimulus generalized to all of these compounds, except cartazolate. In addition, the administration of the benzodiazepine receptor antago

Reduction of visually-induced motion sickness elicited by changes in illumination wavelength.

This experiment was undertaken to assess the degree of stimulus generalization in visually-induced motion sickness. Sixteen subjects participated in six sessions in which they were exposed to a rotating field of vertical stripes for five 4-min trials. This stimulus elicited the perception of self-vection. In the first three sessions, the stripes were illuminated by one monochromatic light (red or green) and in the last three sessions, the stripes were illuminated by the other monochromatic light. Magnitude estimates of motion sickness increased significantly within sessions, but the rate at wh

From forgetting to remembering: Context-dependent memory recovery after postretrieval disruption.

Memories are dynamic and can be made vulnerable to disruption upon reactivation, resulting in a long-lasting attenuation of conditioned responses (i.e., cue-dependent amnesia). Traditionally, cue-dependent amnesia has been studied using AAA between-subjects designs, where a memory is trained for context A, reactivated, and tested with the same context. Using contextual fear conditioning in rats and midazolam as the amnestic agent, we have recently observed that amnesia can be observed when memories are reactivated by a generalization stimulus (context B) and tested with the same generalization

Sound production treatment: effects of blocked and random practice.

PURPOSE: This investigation was designed to further the development of a treatment for acquired apraxia of speech (AOS), Sound Production Treatment (SPT), by examining the effects of blocked and random practice. METHOD: A multiple-baseline design across participants and behaviors was used with 6 speakers with chronic AOS and aphasia. Accuracy of production of target sounds in treated and untreated words produced in probe sessions served as the primary dependent variable. Stimulus generalization was also measured to phrase production and sentence completion. Participants received SPT applied w

Generalized instruction following with pictorial prompts.

The benefits of permanent pictorial prompts in enhancing maintenance and generalization are likely dependent on their degree of stimulus control and the extent to which their use is generalized. Although several studies on the use of pictorial prompts have demonstrated their efficacy (e.g., Pierce & Schreibman, 1994; Wacker & Berg, 1983; Wacker, Berg, Berrie, & Swatta, 1985), there is still some question regarding what ultimately controlled responding. The present study allowed an explicit examination of stimulus control by pictorial prompts. Three 4-year-old children with developmental disabi

Selectivity in the generalization profile in baboons trained to discriminate lorazepam: benzodiazepines, barbiturates and other sedative/anxiolytics.

The discriminative stimulus effects of benzodiazepines often have been indistinguishable from those of barbiturates or other sedative/anxiolytics. However, baboons and rats trained to discriminate lorazepam did not reliably generalize to pentobarbital in previous studies, although animals comparably trained to discriminate pentobarbital reliably generalized to lorazepam. The present study investigated the generalization profile for a variety of anxiolytic, sedative and other drugs in baboons trained to discriminate oral lorazepam (1.8 mg/kg). Effects of undesirable, competing behaviors on the generalization of adaptive skills. A case study.

This study provides a systematic demonstration of generalization failures in which irrelevant stimulus control of competing responses interferes with, or overrides, the stimulus control of adaptive behavior developed during training. Appropriate and inappropriate verbal responses by a 26-year-old woman with severe mental retardation served as the dependent variables. A reversal design across trained and nontrained settings indicates that presenting a stimulus with a prior history of control over "inappropriate" verbalizations concurrently with a stimulus controlling newly acquired "appropriate

The stimulus properties of two common over-the-counter drug mixtures: dextromethorphan + ephedrine and dextromethorphan + diphenhydramine.

Two groups of rats were trained in a two-choice drug discrimination procedure under a fixed-ratio 10 schedule of food reinforcement. One group of rats (n=12) was trained to discriminate the presence and absence of a drug mixture containing 10 mg/kg dextromethorphan + 10 mg/kg diphenhydramine. Teaching complex verbal operants to children with autism and establishing generalization using the peak curriculum.

The present study evaluated the feasibility of the PEAK Relational Training System's Generalization Module (Dixon, 2014b) to teach and establish generalization of autoclitic mands, distorted tacts, and creative path finding in three children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Using a multiple-baseline design across behaviors, each participant was provided with differential reinforcement and a least-to-most prompting hierarchy for correct responses to a subset of stimuli, and responses to other similar stimulus sets were probed for emergent generalization. Following training, each partici

Assaying Fear Memory Discrimination and Generalization: Methods and Concepts.

Generalization describes the transfer of conditioned responding to stimuli that perceptually differ from the original conditioned stimulus. One arena in which discriminant and generalized responding is of particular relevance is when stimuli signal the potential for harm. Aversive (fear) conditioning is a leading behavioral model for studying associative learning and memory processes related to threatening stimuli. This article describes a step-by-step protocol for studying discrimination and generalization using cued fear conditioning in rodents. Alternate conditioning paradigms, including co

Bidirectional cross-modal fear generalization: semantic similarity in representation space as a foundational mechanism.

Fear generalization is vital for human survival in the complex, multimodal environments. Despite extensive research on fear generalization within sensory modalities, our theoretical understanding of cross-modal generalization mechanisms remains unclear. To fill this gap, this study conducted two experiments (total N = 95) to investigate bidirectional cross-modality fear generalization in individuals with high and low anxiety levels: Experiment 1 used an auditory conditioned stimulus (CS) and visual generalization stimuli (GSs), while Experiment 2 used a visual CS and auditory GSs. Participants

Ethanol intake-reducing effects of ipsapirone in rats are not due to simple stimulus substitution.

The present series of experiments was conducted to investigate whether the previously reported ethanol intake reducing effects of the 5-HT1A receptor agonist ipsapirone could be based on possible stimulus similarities between both compounds. Rats were trained to discriminate ethanol (12.5% w/v, 1000 mg/kg, IP) from saline in a two-lever food-reinforced drug discrimination (DD) procedure. Discrimination criterion was reached after a mean number of training sessions of 42. In subsequent generalization sessions, a dose-response curve was established for ethanol (125-1000 mg/kg, IP, ED50 value: 35

Conditioned Fear Acquisition and Generalization in Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

Abnormal fear conditioning processes (including fear acquisition and conditioned fear-generalization) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of anxiety disorders. Previous research has shown that individuals with panic disorder present enhanced conditioned fear-generalization in comparison to healthy controls. Enhanced conditioned fear-generalization could also characterize generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), but research so far is inconclusive. An important confounding factor in previous research is comorbidity. The present study examined conditioned fear-acquisition and fear-generalization

Itsy bitsy spider: Fear and avoidance (generalization) in a free-exploratory virtual reality paradigm.

Most experimental avoidance paradigms lack either control over the experimental situation or simplify real-life avoidance behavior to a great extent, making it difficult to generalize the results to the complex approach-avoidance situations that anxious individuals face in daily life. The current study aimed to examine the usability of our recently developed free-exploratory avoidance paradigm in Virtual Reality (VR) that allows for the assessment of subjective as well as behavioral avoidance in participants with varying levels of spider fear. In a VR escape room, participants searched for cue

Caffeine-phenylethylamine combinations mimic the cocaine discriminative cue.

Twelve male Sprague-Dawley rats were trained in a two-choice, food reinforced, drug discrimination task utilizing 10 mg/kg cocaine and saline as discriminative stimuli. Subjects were tested for stimulus generalization with a wide range of cocaine doses and several dose combinations of caffeine, ephedrine, and phenylpropanolamine (CEP). Caffeine produced only partial generalization. The triple CEP combinations resulted in complete generalization at high doses. All drugs produced response rate decrements at high doses. These data clearly indicate that certain look-alike stimulant products mimic

Four-choice drug discrimination in pigeons.

(+)Amphetamine was added as a training stimulus for pigeons previously trained to discriminate among pentobarbital, morphine and saline using a three-choice procedure. Pigeons quickly learned the four-choice drug discrimination. Generalization from the training drugs was similar to that established with simpler drug discriminations; pentobarbital generalized to chlordiazepoxide, morphine generalized to methadone, and (+)amphetamine generalized to cocaine and methamphetamine. Low doses of phencyclidine generalized to saline, while higher doses partially generalized to pentobarbital and (+)amphe
