Enhancing classification of cells procured from bone marrow aspirate smears using generative adversarial networks and sequential convolutional neural network.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Leukemia represents 30% of all pediatric cancers and is considered the most common malignancy affecting adults and children. Cell differential count obtained from bone marrow aspirate smears is crucial for diagnosing hematologic diseases. Classification of these cell types is an essential task towards analyzing the disease, but it is time-consuming and requires intensive manual intervention. While machine learning has shown excellent outcomes in automating medical diagnosis, it needs ample data to build an efficient model for real-world tasks. This paper aims to gener

Inter-site harmonization based on dual generative adversarial networks for diffusion tensor imaging: application to neonatal white matter development.

BACKGROUND: Site-specific variations are challenges for pooling analyses in multi-center studies. This work aims to propose an inter-site harmonization method based on dual generative adversarial networks (GANs) for diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) derived metrics on neonatal brains. RESULTS: DTI-derived metrics (fractional anisotropy, FA; mean diffusivity, MD) are obtained on age-matched neonates without magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) abnormalities: 42 neonates from site 1 and 42 neonates from site 2. Significant inter-site differences of FA can be observed. The proposed harmonization approa

Automated nonlinear registration of coronary PET to CT angiography using pseudo-CT generated from PET with generative adversarial networks.

BACKGROUND: Coronary 18F-sodium-fluoride (18F-NaF) positron emission tomography (PET) showed promise in imaging coronary artery disease activity. Currently image processing remains subjective due to the need for manual registration of PET and computed tomography (CT) angiography data. We aimed to develop a novel fully automated method to register coronary 18F-NaF PET to CT angiography using pseudo-CT generated by generative adversarial networks (GAN). METHODS: A total of 169 patients, 139 in the training and 30 in the testing sets were considered for generation of pseudo-CT from non-attenuati

A generative adversarial network for multiple reads reconstruction in DNA storage.

DNA storage is widely considered as a promising solution to the data explosion problem. However, the synthesis, PCR and sequencing processes usually result in erroneous reads involving base insertions, deletions, and substitutions. Specially this situation is even more serious in the 3rd generation of sequencing technologies. Different from previous error-correction and multiple sequence alignment methods, we first transform the multiple reads into a noisy mage, and then construct a conditional generative adversarial network to produce a "smooth" image which refers to the consensus sequence. Generative Adversarial Networks to Synthesize Missing T1 and FLAIR MRI Sequences for Use in a Multisequence Brain Tumor Segmentation Model.

Background Missing MRI sequences represent an obstacle in the development and use of deep learning (DL) models that require multiple inputs. Purpose To determine if synthesizing brain MRI scans using generative adversarial networks (GANs) allows for the use of a DL model for brain lesion segmentation that requires T1-weighted images, postcontrast T1-weighted images, fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) images, and T2-weighted images. Materials and Methods In this retrospective study, brain MRI scans obtained between 2011 and 2019 were collected, and scenarios were simulated in which the

Near-infrared spectral data augmentation for underrepresented classes using generative adversarial networks to improve the accuracy of urinary stones classification.

This study addresses the challenge of imbalanced datasets in near-infrared spectroscopy classification of urinary stones, specifically the underrepresentation of phosphate stones that leads to suboptimal predictive performance. We developed a data augmentation approach combining generative adversarial networks (GANs) with Soft Independent Modeling of Class Analogies (SIMCA) filtering to generate synthetic phosphate spectra. A total of 400 artificial spectra were generated, showing visual and PCA-based similarity to real data. Support vector machine (SVM) classification models were trained and

Using generative adversarial deep learning networks to synthesize cerebrovascular reactivity imaging from pre-acetazolamide arterial spin labeling in moyamoya disease.

BACKGROUND: Cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) assesses vascular health in various brain conditions, but CVR measurement requires a challenge to cerebral perfusion such as the administration of acetazolamide(ACZ), thus limiting widespread use. We determined whether generative adversarial networks (GANs) can create CVR images from baseline pre-ACZ arterial spin labeling (ASL) MRI. METHODS: This study included 203 Moyamoya cases with a total of 3248 pre- and post-ACZ ASL Cerebral Blood Flow (CBF) images. Reference CVRs were generated from these CBF slices. From this set, 2640 slices were used to

The Use of Generative Adversarial Network and Graph Convolution Network for Neuroimaging-Based Diagnostic Classification.

Functional connectivity (FC) obtained from resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging has been integrated with machine learning algorithms to deliver consistent and reliable brain disease classification outcomes. However, in classical learning procedures, custom-built specialized feature selection techniques are typically used to filter out uninformative features from FC patterns to generalize efficiently on the datasets. The ability of convolutional neural networks (CNN) and other deep learning models to extract informative features from data with grid structure (such as images) has

Longitudinal association between metal mixture exposure and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: A prospective cohort study based on generative adversarial networks.

Environmental metal exposure represents a potential risk factor for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD); nevertheless, existing observational studies often lack reliable methodologies for exploring potential associations within a counterfactual framework, particularly when addressing complex co-exposures. Addressing these constraints, we conducted a prospective cohort study involving 4095 participants from the Yinchuan community-dwelling elderly cohort with a 3-year follow-up. Twelve baseline urinary metal concentrations were quantified utilizing inductively coupled plasma mass spectrome

Ophthalmic Image Synthesis and Analysis with Generative Adversarial Network Artificial Intelligence.

Generative adversarial networks (GANs), introduced by Ian Goodfellow in 2014, have revolutionized adversarial machine learning, particularly in data synthesis. This manuscript explores their application in ophthalmic diagnostics, addressing the scarcity of annotated datasets and the need for improved early disease detection. By leveraging GAN architectures, the goal is to enhance the quality of synthetic ophthalmic images, ultimately improving diagnostic algorithm training. A systematic review was conducted from January to April 2024 across PubMed, Embase, and Scopus. Efficient Anomaly Detection with Generative Adversarial Network for Breast Ultrasound Imaging.

We aimed to use generative adversarial network (GAN)-based anomaly detection to diagnose images of normal tissue, benign masses, or malignant masses on breast ultrasound. We retrospectively collected 531 normal breast ultrasound images from 69 patients. Data augmentation was performed and 6372 (531 × 12) images were available for training. Efficient GAN-based anomaly detection was used to construct a computational model to detect anomalous lesions in images and calculate abnormalities as an anomaly score. Images of 51 normal tissues, 48 benign masses, and 72 malignant masses were analyzed for

Computational Model to Predict Potential Therapeutic Targets Employing Generative Adversarial Networks for Analysis of Proteins Involved in Mycobacterium fortuitum Biofilm Formation.

A planktonic population of bacteria can form a biofilm by adhesion and colonization. Proteins known as "adhesins" can bind to certain environmental structures, such as sugars, which will cause the bacteria to attach to the substrate. Quorum sensing is used to establish the population is dense enough to form a biofilm. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of our investigation into these processes, specifically focusing on Mycobacterium fortuitum, an emerging pathogen of increasing clinical relevance. In our study, we detailed the methodology employed for the proteomic analysis of M. for

Generation of virtual monoenergetic images at 40 keV of the upper abdomen and image quality evaluation based on generative adversarial networks.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal CT scans are vital for diagnosing abdominal diseases but have limitations in tissue analysis and soft tissue detection. Dual-energy CT (DECT) can improve these issues by offering low keV virtual monoenergetic images (VMI), enhancing lesion detection and tissue characterization. However, its cost limits widespread use. PURPOSE: To develop a model that converts conventional images (CI) into generative virtual monoenergetic images at 40 keV (Gen-VMI40keV) of the upper abdomen CT scan. METHODS: Totally 444 patients who underwent upper abdominal spectral contrast-enhanced CT

A Conditional Generative Adversarial Network for Synthesis of Continuous Glucose Monitoring Signals.

This report describes how a Conditional Generative Adversarial Network (CGAN) was used to synthesize realistic continuous glucose monitoring systems (CGM) from healthy individuals and individuals with type 1 diabetes over a range of different HbA1c levels. The results showed that even though the CGAN generated data, did not perfectly reflect real world CGM, many of the important features were captured and reflected in the synthetic signals. It is briefly discussed how heterogenous data sources constitutes a challenge for comparison of predictive CGM models. Therefore 40,000 CGM days were gener
