Multi-Drug Resistance to Salmonella spp. When Isolated from Raw Meat Products.

Salmonella spp. is the most frequent cause of foodborne diseases, and the increasing occurrence of MDR strains is an additional and increasing problem. We collected Salmonella spp. strains isolated from meat (poultry and pork) and analysed their antibiotic susceptibility profiles and the occurrence of resistance genes. To determine the susceptibility profiles and identify MDR strains, we used two MIC methods (MICRONAUT and VITEC2 Compact) and 25 antibiotics. Phenotypic tests showed that 53.84% strains were MDR. Finally, molecular analysis strains revealed the presence of blaSHV, blaPSE-1, blaT

Genotypic Analysis of Genes Associated with Independent Resistance and Cross-Resistance to Isoniazid and Ethionamide in Mycobacterium tuberculosis Clinical Isolates.

Ethionamide (ETH) is an antibiotic used for the treatment of multidrug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis (TB) (MDR-TB), and its use may be limited with the emergence of resistance in the Mycobacterium tuberculosis population. ETH resistance in M. tuberculosis is phenomenon independent or cross related when accompanied with isoniazid (INH) resistance. In most cases, resistance to INH and ETH is explained by mutations in the inhA promoter and in the following genes: katG, ethA, ethR, mshA, ndh, and inhA. We sequenced the above genes in 64 M. tuberculosis isolates (n = 57 ETH-resistant MDR-TB isolates

Dissecting the first and the second meiotic divisions using a marker-less drug-hypersensitive fission yeast.

Faithful chromosome segregation during meiosis is indispensable to prevent birth defects and infertility. Canonical genetic manipulations have not been very useful for studying meiosis II, since mutations of genes involved in cell cycle regulation or chromosome segregation may affect meiosis I, making interpretations of any defects observed in meiosis II complicated. Here we present a powerful strategy to dissect meiosis I and meiosis II, using chemical inhibitors in genetically tractable model organism fission yeast (Schizosaccharomyces pombe). As various chemical probes are not active in fis

Emergence of multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria during selective decontamination of the digestive tract on an intensive care unit.

OBJECTIVES: During treatment with selective decontamination of the digestive tract (SDD), four multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains, three different Escherichia coli and one Klebsiella pneumoniae, were isolated from four patients not known as carriers of such MDR strains before their admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) in the Academic Medical Center (AMC) in Amsterdam. These isolates were extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-positive. We investigated whether this was due to interspecies transfer of resistance genes. METHODS: The MDR strains were typed by amplified fragment length polym

Antibiotic susceptibility patterns of clinical isolates of salmonella species producing extended spectrum beta lactamases as predictor of multidrug resistance in a tertiary hospital, Southeastern Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: The global rise of multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extended-spectrum β-lactamase–producing (ESBL) Salmonella undermines treatment efficacy and threatens public health, particularly in low-resource settings. In Nigeria, data on resistance mechanisms in clinical isolates remain sparse. This study evaluates whether resistance genes and antibiogram profiles can reliably predict MDR and ESBL phenotypes to enhance early detection and surveillance. METHODS: This cross-sectional, laboratory-based study was conducted from January-December 2024 and analyzed 265 clinical samples (241 faecal, 24

Molecular Indicator for Distinguishing Multi-drug-Resistant Tuberculosis from Drug Sensitivity Tuberculosis and Potential Medications for Treatment.

The issue of multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) presents a substantial challenge to global public health. Regrettably, the diagnosis of drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) frequently necessitates an extended period or more extensive laboratory resources. The swift identification of MDR-TB poses a particularly challenging endeavor. To identify the biomarkers indicative of multi-drug resistance, we conducted a screening of the GSE147689 dataset for differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and subsequently conducted a gene enrichment analysis. Our analysis identified a total of 117 DEGs, con

Establishing a Practical Approach to Sewer Monitoring for Antimicrobial Resistance Genes and Organisms at Healthcare Facilities.

BACKGROUND: Surveillance of wastewater from healthcare facilities has the potential to identify the emergence of multidrug-resistance (MDR) genes of public health importance. Specifically, wastewater surveillance (WWS) can provide sentinel surveillance of novel MDR genes or organisms in healthcare facilities, helping to direct targeted prevention efforts and monitor longitudinal effects. Several knowledge gaps need to be addressed before WWS can be used routinely for MDR surveillance, including determining optimal approaches to sampling, processing, and testing wastewater. METHODS: To this en

Antimicrobial resistance genes in multidrug-resistant Salmonella enterica isolated from animals, retail meats, and humans in the United States and Canada.

Salmonella enterica is a prevalent foodborne pathogen that can carry multidrug resistance (MDR) and pose a threat to human health. Identifying the genetics associated with MDR in Salmonella isolated from animals, foods, and humans can help determine sources of MDR in food animals and their impact on humans. S. enterica serovars most frequently carrying MDR from healthy animals, retail meats, and human infections in the United States and Canada were identified and isolates resistant to the largest number of antimicrobials were chosen. Isolates were from U.S. slaughter (n=12), retail (9), and hu
