The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 EG.5 lineage is the latest variant under monitoring, and it is generating significant concern due to its recent upward trend in prevalence. Our aim was to gain insights into this emerging lineage and offer insights into its actual level of threat. Both genetic and structural data indicate that this novel variant presently lacks substantial evidence of having a high capacity for widespread transmission. Their viral population sizes expanded following a very mild curve and peaked several months after the earliest detected sample. Currently, nei

Genetic relationships among echovirus type 25 (ECV 25) isolates associated with aseptic meningitis in Germany 1997/98 and a 40-year-old ECV 25 prototype strain were investigated using RT-PCR and direct sequencing the VP1/2A gene junction region. Sequences were compared to each other and to non-polio enterovirus representatives (phylogenetic analysis). The analysis indicated that the sequences of recent isolates have drifted over time distinctly away from the prototype strain sequence. Genetic drift may change biological features of isolates possibly leading to new antigenic variants.

Understanding how demography and natural selection interact during colonization of novel environments is a central question in evolutionary biology. The Baltic Sea region combines one of the world's strongest salinity gradients with a well-characterized postglacial history of less than ~12,000 years. The harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) is distributed across this gradient as three populations-the North Sea, Belt Sea and Proper Baltic Sea populations. Using whole genome resequencing data from 59 individuals, we reconstructed the demographic history of Baltic colonization and identified geno

Descendants of Dutch colonists, who emigrated to Surinam in the last century and survived epidemics of typhoid and yellow fever with a total mortality of about 60%, were tested for twenty-six polymorphisms. The gene frequencies were compared with those of a large Dutch control sample. An analysis of drift indicated that the variations in gene frequencies observed for C3, Gm, HLA-B, and GLO were unlikely to be due to drift. Therefore these data might indicate selection through genetic control of survival in these epidemics.

Sex determination systems and genetic sex differentiation across fishes are highly diverse but are unknown for most Cypriniformes, including Rio Grande silvery minnow (Hybognathus amarus). In this study, we aimed to detect and validate sex-linked markers to infer sex determination system and to demonstrate the utility of combining several methods for sex-linked marker detection in nonmodel organisms. To identify potential sex-linked markers, Nextera-tagmented reductively amplified DNA (nextRAD) libraries were generated from 66 females, 64 males, and 60 larvae of unknown sex. These data were co

Chins, which are unique to humans, have generated considerable debate concerning their evolutionary origins, yet a consensus has remained elusive. Many have argued that chins are adaptations for chewing stress, speech, or sexual ornamentation. Alternatively, some have suggested that chins are spandrels-byproducts of selection operating elsewhere in the mandible or face. Lastly, chins could be the product of genetic drift. The questions addressed by this study are: [1] whether chins represent an exceptionally derived morphological condition, and [2] if this can be interpreted as the product of

Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus, Acipenseridae) populations are currently at severely depleted levels due to historic overfishing, habitat loss, and pollution. The importance of biologically correct stock structure for effective conservation and management efforts is well known. Recent improvements in our understanding of Atlantic sturgeon migrations, movement, and the occurrence of putative dual spawning groups leads to questions regarding the true stock structure of this endangered species. In the James River, VA specifically, captures of spawning Atlantic sturgeon and acc

This study presents a comparative analysis of the genetic structure and diversity of three red fox (Vulpes vulpes L.) populations representing different microevolutionary scenarios: panmixia (free-ranging Belarusian foxes), geographic isolation (free-ranging Scottish foxes), and anthropogenic selection (farm-bred foxes). Using a validated set of STR markers, multivariate statistical analysis was conducted to assess the genetic structure and the degree of genetic erosion across the studied groups. The wild red fox population in Belarus has been shown to maintain a state close to panmixia (PHWE

Inbreeding can threaten population persistence by reducing disease resistance through the accelerated loss of gene diversity (i.e. heterozygosity). Such inbreeding depression can affect many different fitness-related traits, including survival, reproductive success, and parasite susceptibility. Empirically quantifying the effects of inbreeding on parasite resistance is therefore important for ex-situ conservation of vertebrates. The present study evaluates the disease susceptibility of individuals bred under three different breeding regimes (inbred, crossed with full siblings; control, randoml

The results of molecular genetic analysis of more than 280 strains of influenza A virus subtypes H1N1 and H3N2 circulating in Russia in 2006-2012 are presented. The genetic changes underlying the evolution of the virus strains and sensitivity to antiviral drugs were analyzed. Significant changes in the genetic structure of influenza A viruses circulating in the Russian Federation and their phylogenetic affiliation are shown to occur within the studied period. The studies identifying codons under the positive selection in silico in the genes encoding surface proteins of the influenza virus were

The theory of the clonal origin of cancer states that a tumour arises from one cell that acquires mutation(s) leading to the malignant phenotype. It is the current belief that many of these mutations give a fitness advantage to the mutant population allowing it to expand, eventually leading to disease. However, mutations that lead to such a clonal expansion need not give a fitness advantage and may in fact be neutral--or almost neutral--with respect to fitness. Such mutant clones can be eliminated or expand stochastically, leading to a malignant phenotype (disease). Mutations in haematopoietic

BACKGROUND: Population differentiation has proved to be effective for identifying loci under geographically localized positive selection, and has the potential to identify loci subject to balancing selection. We have previously investigated the pattern of genetic differentiation among human populations at 36.8 million genomic variants to identify sites in the genome showing high frequency differences. Here, we extend this dataset to include additional variants, survey sites with low levels of differentiation, and evaluate the extent to which highly differentiated sites are likely to result fro

Most animals have specialized into separate sexes but most plants remain hermaphroditic. The underlining cause for this is still unclear. Here we address this question by evolutionary stable strategy analysis and exact calculation of frequency-dependent selection and genetic drift in geographically structured populations. Reproductive investments of hermaphrodites are divided into male and female functions, and each sex requires linear investments that increase linearly with successful gamete number and reusable investments (RIs) that increase less than linearly. Individuals specializing into

Antigenic drift of the hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) proteins of the influenza virus cause a decrease in vaccine efficacy. Since the information about the evolution of these viruses in Saudi is deficient so we investigated the genetic diversity of circulating H1N1 viruses. Nasopharyngeal aspirates/swabs collected from 149 patients hospitalized with flu-like symptoms during 2014 and 2015 were analyzed. Viral RNA extraction was followed by a reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and genetic sequencing. We analyzed complete gene sequences of HA and NA from 80 positive isolat

Three sibs from a Mexican mestizo family affected with a spondylo-epi-metaphyseal dysplasia were studied. The clinical, radiological, and genetic findings were similar to those previously described in Venezuelan Indians of the Irapa tribe. The present patients permit confirmation of the syndrome and provide evidence for autosomal recessive inheritance. Genetic drift is postulated.

Herbicide drift exposes nontarget plants to sublethal agrochemical doses, yet its ecological and evolutionary consequences remain poorly understood. Although hormesis - stimulatory responses to low doses of otherwise toxic compounds - has been documented following herbicide exposure, it has rarely been examined within an evolutionary ecology framework. Here, we examine herbicide-induced hormesis in the agricultural weed Oxalis stricta across two field experiments. We exposed replicated maternal lines to dicamba drift and quantified growth, reproductive traits, floral allocation, and pollinator

Understanding the maintenance of genetic variation in natural populations is a core aim of evolutionary genetics. Insight can be gained by quantifying selection at the level of the genotype, as opposed to the phenotype. Here, we show that in a natural population of Soay sheep which is polymorphic for coat pattern, recessive genetic variants at the causal gene, agouti signalling protein (ASIP) are associated with reduced lifetime fitness. This was due primarily to a reduction in juvenile survival of uniformly coloured (self-type) sheep, which are homozygous recessive, and occurs despite signifi

Understanding the biological processes involved in genetic differentiation and divergence between populations within species is a pivotal aim in evolutionary biology. One particular phenomenon that requires clarification is the maintenance of genetic barriers despite the high potential for gene flow in the marine environment. Such patterns have been attributed to limited dispersal or local adaptation, and to a lesser extent to the demographic history of the species. The corkwing wrasse (Symphodus melops) is an example of a marine fish species where regions of particular strong divergence are o

Chlamydiae are an example of obligate intracellular bacteria that possess highly reduced, compact genomes (1.0-3.5 Mbp), reflective of their abilities to sequester many essential nutrients from the host that they no longer need to synthesize themselves. The Chlamydiae is a phylum with a very wide host range spanning mammals, birds, fish, invertebrates, and unicellular protists. This ecological and phylogenetic diversity offers ongoing opportunities to study intracellular survival and metabolic pathways and adaptations. Of particular evolutionary significance are Chlamydiae from the recently pr

Pasteurella multocida is a gram-negative, non-motile bacterial pathogen, which is associated with chronic and acute infections as snuffles, pneumonia, atrophic rhinitis, fowl cholera and hemorrhagic septicemia. These diseases affect a wide range of domestic animals, leading to significant morbidity and mortality and causing significant economic losses worldwide. Due to the interest in deciphering the genetic diversity and process adaptive between P. multocida strains, this work aimed was to perform a pan-genome analysis to evidence horizontal gene transfer and positive selection among 23 P. mu
