A recent study demonstrated that British red foxes introduced to the mid-Atlantic coastal plain (ACP) of the eastern United States during the late 18th century successfully interbred with indigenous American red foxes despite half a million year's divergence. However, a large disparity in frequency of European mitochondria (27%) versus Y chromosomes (1%) left unclear the magnitude of genetic exchange. We sought to quantify genomic introgression using 35 autosomal and 5 X-chromosome ancestry-informative markers (AIMs) in conjunction with diagnostic Y chromosome single nucleotide polymorphism (Y

Mitochondrial introgression raises questions of biogeography and of the extent of reproductive isolation and natural selection. Previous phylogenetic work on the Sorex araneus complex revealed apparent mitonuclear discordance in Iberian shrews, indicating past hybridisation of Sorex granarius and the Carlit chromosomal race of S. araneus, enabling introgression of the S. araneus mitochondrial genome into S. granarius. To further study this, we genetically typed 61 Sorex araneus/coronatus/granarius from localities in Portugal, Spain, France, and Andorra at mitochondrial, autosomal, and sex-link

Introgression among parasite species has the potential to transfer traits of biomedical importance across species boundaries. The parasitic blood fluke Schistosoma haematobium causes urogenital schistosomiasis in humans across sub-Saharan Africa. Hybridization with other schistosome species is assumed to occur commonly, because genetic crosses between S. haematobium and livestock schistosomes, including S. bovis, can be staged in the laboratory, and sequencing of mtDNA and rDNA amplified from microscopic miracidia larvae frequently reveals markers from different species. However, the frequency

Population genetic theory predicts that species with narrow geographic distributions experience stronger genetic drift, higher inbreeding, and greater mutational burden than their widespread relatives, yet how demographic history shapes the genomic basis of adaptation remains poorly understood. We hypothesized that (i) restricted-range species exhibit reduced genetic diversity, elevated inbreeding, and greater mutation load owing to smaller long-term effective population sizes; (ii) despite these demographic constraints, shared environmental pressures can still drive repeated adaptation; (iii)

Protein aggregation of α-synuclein (αS) is a genetic and neuropathological hallmark of Parkinson's disease (PD). Studies in the model nematode Caenorhabditis elegans suggested that variation of αS aggregation depends on the genetic background. However, which genes and genetic modifiers underlie individual differences in αS pathology remains unknown. To study the genotypic-phenotypic relationship of αS aggregation, we constructed a Recombinant Inbred Line (RIL) panel derived from a cross between genetically divergent strains C. elegans NL5901 and SCH4856, both harboring the human αS gene. As a

The creation of chromosome substitution lines containing one pair of chromosomes from a related species is one method for introgression of alien genetic material. The frequency of substitutions in different chromosomes of the genome varies due to the selective transmission of alien chromosomes through the gametes of hybrids. The use of monosomic lines with identified univalent chromosomes and molecular genetic SSR markers at the seedling stage allowed rapid screening of the identity of the alien chromosome in backcross hybrids, significantly accelerating and facilitating the backcrossing proce

Despite the ubiquity of wild boar populations across Eurasia, their origins, routes of dispersal, and phenotypic evolution remain uncertain. Here, using 745 genomes representing populations across Eurasia, we demonstrate that wild boar expanded from South Asia during the Middle Pleistocene. This expansion was preceded by a Pliocene introgression (~3 to 5 million years ago) in South Asia from an archaic Suinae lineage that introduced a ~43 megabase X-chromosomal haplotype into the ancestral wild boar population. This haplotype includes loci associated with increased body size and adaptation to

The mosquito species Aedes aegypti is the primary transmitter of viruses that cause endemic diseases like dengue in Pakistan. It is also a cause of other vector-borne diseases like yellow fever, Zika fever, and chikungunya, which significantly impact human health worldwide. In the absence of efficient vaccines (except for yellow fever) or drugs, vector control methods, such as the sterile insect technique (SIT), have been proposed as additional tools for the management of these diseases. Mosquito SIT programs are based on the release of sterile males and it is important female releases to be i

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti is the principal mosquito vector of Zika, dengue, and yellow fever viruses. Two subspecies of Ae. aegypti exhibit phenotypic divergence with regard to habitat, host preference, and vectorial capacity. Chromosomal inversions have been shown to play a major role in adaptation and speciation in dipteran insects and would be of great utility for studies of Ae. aegypti. However, the large and highly repetitive genome of Ae. aegypti makes it difficult to detect inversions with paired-end short-read sequencing data, and polytene chromosome analysis does not provide sufficien

Hybrids between Schistosoma haematobium and Schistosoma bovis contribute to human and animal infections, highlighting complex interspecies interactions that facilitate schistosomiasis transmission. Schistosoma bovis infects multiple ruminant hosts, promoting cross-species transmission and increasing zoonotic risk. This study explores transcriptomic plasticity as a mechanism enabling hybrid schistosomes to adapt to different definitive hosts. We analysed two contexts: (1) introgressed S. haematobium × S. bovis hybrids, which exhibited higher virulence in sheep than parental S. bovis; and (2) S.

We have analyzed the sterility associated with introgressions of the distal one-fourth of the X chromosome from either Drosophila mauritiana or Drosophila sechellia into the genome of Drosophila simulans using a series of visible and DNA markers. Because in Drosophila hybrids, male sterility is usually complete and is often tightly linked with each of several markers used in crosses, a simple genetic basis has generally been assumed. In our low resolution mapping experiment, we were not able to reject the null hypothesis that a single gene, introgressed from either D. mauritiana or D. sechelli

BACKGROUND: There has been considerable interest in discovery of the genetic architecture of complex traits, particularly age-related neurodegenerative disorders. To predict disease risk and to understand its genetic basis in humans, it is necessary to study animal models. Our previous research on the accelerated-senescence OXYS strain has revealed two quantitative trait loci (QTLs) on rat chromosome 1 that are associated with early cataract and/or retinopathy as well as with behavioral abnormalities. Each locus was partially mapped within the introgressed segments in a certain congenic strain

Coat color polymorphism in domestic animals provides a robust framework for elucidating mechanisms of species adaptation, domestication, and genomic diversity. Leiqiong cattle, a representative indicine breed from southern China, are predominantly yellow-coated, although a subset exhibits a solid black phenotype. To determine the genetic basis of this variation, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) was performed in 212 Leiqiong bulls. A pronounced association signal was detected on chromosome 6 within the fifth intron of the CORIN gene, providing the first evidence of the potential influence

Structured populations, and replicated zones of contact between species, are an ideal opportunity to study regions of the genome with unusual levels of differentiation; and these can illuminate the genomic architecture of species isolation, and the spread of adaptive alleles across species ranges. Here, we investigated the effects of gene flow on divergence and adaptation in the Mytilus complex of species, including replicated parental populations in quite distant geographical locations. We used target enrichment sequencing of 1269 contigs of a few kb each, including some genes of known functi

Golden Rice with β-carotene in the grain helps to address the problem of vitamin A deficiency. Prior to commercialize Golden Rice, several performance and regulatory checkpoints must be achieved. We report results of marker assisted backcross breeding of the GR2E trait into three popular rice varieties followed by a series of confined field tests of event GR2E introgression lines to assess their agronomic performance and carotenoid expression. Results from confined tests in the Philippines and Bangladesh have shown that GR2E introgression lines matched the performance of the recurrent parents

By integrating ND‑FISH, Oligo‑FISH painting, and chromosome microdissection, we established a comprehensive platform for decaploid Thinopyrum ponticum, enabling karyotyping, sequencing, and marker development, which provides precise tools for the targeted introgression and utilization of alien chromatin in wheat breeding. Thinopyrum ponticum (Podp.) Barkworth & D.R. Dewey, a decaploid wild relative of wheat, represents a valuable genetic reservoir for improving abiotic stress tolerance and disease resistance in wheat breeding. However, its complex genome structure and polyploid nature have lon

The genetic control of GFD in sorghum closely overlaps with that of grain size, is influenced by both pre- and post-anthesis processes, offering new opportunities for yield improvement through targeted breeding and inter-racial trait introgression. The duration of the grain filling period has been associated with yield increases in cereals including maize and sorghum. The genetic control of grain filling duration (GFD) is however not known in sorghum. This study explored the genetic variation and extent of genetic control for GFD in a diverse panel of sorghum genotypes (n=904), in three enviro

Wheat production faces severe yield threats globally and regionally in India from rust diseases caused by Puccinia species. Genetic resistance breeding is the most sustainable approach to mitigate these losses, but traditional phenotypic selection is often constrained by environmental fluctuations and rapid pathogen evolution. Here we utilized marker-assisted backcross breeding (MABB) to introgress broad-spectrum yellow rust resistance genes, Yr10 and Yr15, from the donor genetic stock PBW703 into the elite, high-yielding wheat cultivar DBW88 to develop two high-yielding rust-resistant genotyp

When domesticated species are not reproductively isolated from their wild relatives, the opportunity arises for artificially selected variants to be re-introduced into the wild. However, the evolutionary consequences of introgression of domesticated genes back into the wild are poorly understood. By combining high-throughput genotyping with 25 years of long-term ecological field data, we describe the occurrence and consequences of admixture between a primitive sheep breed, the free-living Soay sheep of St Kilda, and more modern breeds. Utilizing data from a 50 K ovine SNP chip, together with f

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) translocated into the nuclear genome (numt), when co-analysed with genuine mtDNA, could plague phylogeographic studies. To evaluate numt-related biases in population genetics parameters in birds, which are prone to accumulating numts, we targeted the mitochondrial mt-cytb gene. We looked at 13 populations of Audubon's shearwater (Puffinus lherminieri), including five mitochondrial lineages. mt-cytb homologue and paralogue (numt) sequences were determined by Sanger sequencing with and without prior exonuclease digestion of nuclear DNA. Numts formed monophyletic clades
