Y-chromosome Degeneration due to Speciation and Founder Effect.

The Y chromosome in the XY sex-determination system is often shorter than its X counterpart, a condition attributed to degeneration after Y recombination ceases. Contrary to the traditional view of continuous, gradual degeneration, our study reveals stabilization within large mating populations. In these populations, we demonstrate that both mutant and active alleles on the Y chromosome can reach equilibrium through a mutation-selection balance. However, the emergence of a new species, particularly through the founder effect, can disrupt this equilibrium. Specifically, if the male founders of

The Complex Interplay between Evolutionary Flexibility and Diversification in a Family of Spiders.

Understanding the mechanisms of how morphological traits drive speciation and contribute to species richness is pivotal in evolutionary biology. In this context, the evolutionary flexibility of morphological traits may play a significant role. Using the diverse daddy long-legs spiders, Pholcidae, which currently includes some 2000 described species, we explored the interplay between speciation rate, trait evolution rate, microhabitat shift rate, species richness, interspecific variability of body size, leg length, relative leg length, and leg proportions. We applied a combination of large-scal

The diversification of Caribbean Buxus in time and space: elevated speciation rates in lineages that accumulate nickel and spreading to other islands from Cuba in non-obligate ultramafic species.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The genus Buxus has high levels of endemism in the Caribbean flora, with ~50 taxa. In Cuba, 82 % grow on ultramafic substrates and 59 % are nickel (Ni) accumulators or Ni hyperaccumulators. Hence it is an ideal model group to study if this diversification could be related to adaptation to ultramafic substrates and to Ni hyperaccumulation. METHODS: We generated a well-resolved molecular phylogeny, including nearly all of the Neotropical and Caribbean Buxus taxa. To obtain robust divergence times we tested for the effects of different calibration scenarios, and we reconstru

Cryptic, Sympatric Diversity in Tegu Lizards of the Tupinambis teguixin Group (Squamata, Sauria, Teiidae) and the Description of Three New Species.

Tegus of the genera Tupinambis and Salvator are the largest Neotropical lizards and the most exploited clade of Neotropical reptiles. For three decades more than 34 million tegu skins were in trade, about 1.02 million per year. The genus Tupinambis is distributed in South America east of the Andes, and currently contains four recognized species, three of which are found only in Brazil. However, the type species of the genus, T. teguixin, is known from Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guyana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, and Venezuela (including the Isla de Margarita).

Five years of Homo floresiensis.

Since Homo floresiensis was first described in October 2004 there has been a lively debate over its status. Is it a late surviving species of early Homo or merely a modern individual afflicted with disordered growth and one of the many syndromes resulting in microchephaly? Recently the discovery team has published a series of articles providing detailed descriptions of the hominin material, its geomorphological context, and the associated archaeology and faunal material (Morwood and Jungers: J Hum Evol 57 (2009) 437-648). In addition, other researchers have put forward new hypotheses for possi

Repeated cases of allopatric divergence and secondary contact in cattail (Typha) speciation.

Understanding how speciation unfolds is a central goal of evolutionary biology. Historically, global climatic fluctuations have triggered allopatric diversification. Using genome-wide data, we reconstructed the phylogenetic relationships and demographic histories of five Typha species, a plant genus foundational to freshwater ecosystems, with widespread, partially sympatric ranges and at least one widespread, regionally invasive hybrid zone (Typha × glauca). Molecular clock and demographic analyses indicate that the species in this study diverged in the absence of gene flow, during periods rou

Gene Flow Accompanies Divergence in Beringian Birds.

The generation and maintenance of biodiversity are driven by population divergence and speciation. We investigated divergence, gene flow, and speciation in Beringia, a region at the top of the North Pacific Ocean with a history of dramatic landscape alteration through Pleistocene glacial cycles. These cycles repeatedly split and connected the Asian and North American continents, separating and reconnecting avian populations. Glacial refugia within Beringia also isolated some populations for a time before potentially enabling them to reunite during interglacial periods. Prior work suggests gene

[Origin of the plague microbe Yersinia pestis: structure of the process of speciation].

The origin and evolution of the plague microbe Yersinia pestis are considered in the context of propositions of modern Darwinism. It was shown that the plague pathogen diverged from the pseudotuberculous microbe Yersinia pseudotuberculosis O:1b in the mountain steppe landscapes of Central Asia in the Sartan: 22000-15000 years ago. Speciation occurred in the tarbagan (Marmota sibirica)--flea (Oropsylla silantiewi) parasitic system. The structure of the speciation process included six stages: isolation, genetic drift, enhancement of intrapopulational polymorphism, the beginning of pesticin synth

Intraspecific variation in Gyrodactylus mediotorus and G. crysoleucas (Gyrodactylidae) from Nearctic shiners (Leuciscidae): evidence for ongoing speciation, host-switching, and parasite translocation.

A parasitological investigation of Cyprinella venusta and Notropis cf. stramineus sampled in Texas, USA, in the Guadalupe River, revealed the presence of Gyrodactylus crysoleucas Mizelle and Kritsky, 1967 on C. venusta, and Gyrodactylus mediotorus King, Marcogliese, Forest, McLaughlin & Bentzen, 2013 on both fish species. This represents new leuscicid fish hosts and locality records for these two gyrodactylids. Gyrodactylus crysoleucas previously identified from both non-native Californian Notemigonus crysoleucas and from farmed stocks in Minnesota demonstrated intraspecific variability in ter

Genetic differentiation among populations of a Hispaniolan trunk anole that exhibit geographical variation in dewlap colour.

Long neglected by classic island biogeographical theory, speciation within and among islands is increasingly recognized as a major contributor to insular diversity. Although the factors responsible for island speciation remain poorly understood, this process appears critically dependent on geographical variation and speciation in allopatry or parapatry. Here, we investigate geographical variation and speciation in a complex of Hispaniolan trunk anoles (Anolis distichus), where populations with strikingly distinct dewlap colours and patterns correspond with deeply divergent mtDNA structure. Disassociation between weak sexual isolation and genetic divergence in a hermaphroditic land snail and implications about chirality.

Examination of the association between reproductive isolation and genetic divergence in a variety of organisms is essential for elucidating the mechanisms causing speciation. However, such studies are lacking for hermaphrodites. We measured premating (sexual) isolation in species pairs of the hermaphroditic land snail Albinaria and we compared it with their genetic divergence. We did not find substantial sexual isolation barriers between the species studied. The absence of strong sexual isolation between species implies its minor effect in the evolution of this genus, because distributional, p

Genomic data reveals cryptic diversity and suggests five putative species in the broad-snouted caiman in South America.

The inclusion of molecular data in evolutionary studies revealed a vast underestimation of species richness and allowed for assessing the relative importance of landscape features on the evolutionary history of species with different ecological requirements. Here, we used genomic-scale data to assess the genetic diversity of the crocodylian Caiman latirostris, exploring drivers of diversification. Using phylogenomic analysis, we identified five deeply diverged populations that are putative new species under C. latirostris. Genetic structure is coherent with South American watersheds, with evol

Untangling the effects of within-host and between-host natural selection in viruses with applications to evolution of HIV-1 co-receptor usage.

The fitness of a pathogen can be characterized at multiple levels corresponding to different life cycle stages. Typically, epidemiological studies for measuring pathogen fitness compute a single selection coefficient for pathogen variants that encompasses the entire lifecycle. However, evolution towards greater fitness within hosts can potentially compromise transmissibility. To address this, we develop a population-genetic model and software for the inference of multi-level selection coefficients. Our approach builds on population-genetic models previously applied to macro-evolution, whereby

Interactions between Mechanisms of Reproductive Isolation.

AbstractSpeciation is responsible for the diversity of species observed today and corresponds to the buildup of reproductive isolation between populations. Reproductive isolation can be generated by different mechanisms that have been extensively characterized, yet how their interactions affect speciation remains largely unknown. Here, we explicitly model the interaction of three key mechanisms (local adaptation, mate choice, and genetic hybrid incompatibilities), quantifying their relative contribution to the evolution of reproductive isolation. We modeled two populations exchanging migrants

Simulated evolution of mating signal diversification in a primate radiation.

Divergence in allopatry and subsequent diversification of mating signals on secondary contact (reinforcement) is a major driver of phenotypic diversity. Observing this evolutionary process directly is often impossible, but simulated evolution can pinpoint key drivers of phenotypic variation. We developed evolutionary simulations in which mating signals, modelled as points in phenotype space, evolve across time under varying evolutionary scenarios. We model mate recognition signals in guenons, a primate radiation exhibiting colourful and diverse face patterns hypothesized to maintain reproducti

A method to distinguish morphologically similar Peromyscus species using extracellular RNA and high-resolution melt analysis.

A method applying high-resolution melt (HRM) analysis to PCR products copied and amplified from extracellular RNA (exRNA) has been developed to distinguish two morphologically similar Peromyscus species: Peromyscus leucopus and Peromyscus maniculatus. P. leucopus is considered the primary reservoir host of Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent for Lyme disease in North America. In northern Minnesota the habitat ranges of P. leucopus overlaps with that of P. maniculatus. Serum samples from live mice of both species were collected from cheek bleeds, total extracellular RNA (exRNA) was extrac

A Miocene hyperdiverse crocodylian community reveals peculiar trophic dynamics in proto-Amazonian mega-wetlands.

Amazonia contains one of the world's richest biotas, but origins of this diversity remain obscure. Onset of the Amazon River drainage at approximately 10.5 Ma represented a major shift in Neotropical ecosystems, and proto-Amazonian biotas just prior to this pivotal episode are integral to understanding origins of Amazonian biodiversity, yet vertebrate fossil evidence is extraordinarily rare. Two new species-rich bonebeds from late Middle Miocene proto-Amazonian deposits of northeastern Peru document the same hyperdiverse assemblage of seven co-occurring crocodylian species. Besides the large-b

From Andes to the dry diagonal: phylogenomics and trait evolution elucidate the radiation of cacti in South American drylands.

The expansion of arid and dry ecosystems during the Miocene played a key role in the diversification of succulent plants; however, the relative contributions of biotic traits and environmental factors linked to aridity remain unclear. We investigate diversification in the cactus tribe Cereeae by integrating phylogenomic, biogeographic, and trait-based diversification analyses. We reconstructed a time-calibrated phylogeny and inferred ancestral ranges through biogeographic process-based modeling. We assessed diversification rate heterogeneity and evaluated the impacts of biotic traits and envir

Sexual selection drives the speciation of lineages with contrasting mating systems.

Repeated shifts in ecological strategies often lead to consistent speciation patterns across phylogenies. One example is the transition from outcrossing to self-fertilization in plants, which generally results in the reproductive isolation of the incipient selfing lineages. However, the evolutionary mechanisms driving their speciation remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigate the hybridization rate and barriers to gene flow between the recently evolved selfing lineage Capsella rubella and its outcrossing ancestor C. grandiflora. Through a survey of sympatric populations in Greece
