The human impulsivity-related trait has a complex background that is influenced by genetic and non-genetic factors. Impulsivity-related genetic factors have been evaluated in the field of psychiatry previously. Many previous reports have suggested that genetic variants associated with the hyperstimulation of the dopaminergic and serotonergic systems may have main roles in impulsivity. Although impulse control and related behaviors (ICRBs) in Parkinson's disease (PD) are now recognized as important nonmotor symptoms, ICRBs has seldom been evaluated for its genetic susceptibility in PD. BACKGROUND: Hyperhomocysteinemia is an independent risk factor for stroke and other vascular events. The variant methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T is associated with elevated homocysteine levels, cardiovascular disease and stroke, which supports a causal relationship between hyperhomocysteinemia and vascular disease. However, MTHFR variants have also been reported to be associated with smoking behavior, which could be an important confounder.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We analyzed the MTHFR variants C677T and A1298C in two independent samples of 525 and 535 individuals, r

OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that the genetic makeup has an impact on the functional behavior of the uterine cervix. Therefore, we compared the biomechanical properties of uterine cervix in postpartum in 2 strains of mice that differ in their underlying regenerative collagen remodeling characteristics: MRL/MpJ+/+ (MRL: high regenerative repair) and C57BL/6 (C57: low regenerative high fibrotic repair).
STUDY DESIGN: Cervical tensile proprieties were assessed on day 3, 15, and 60 postpartum in MRL (n = 14) and C57 (n = 13) mice (4-5 animals at each time point). Stress-strain curves were generated

This study examined effects from a specific dopamine receptor gene (DRD4), environmental influences from parents and peers, and the interaction between them, on aggressive and prosocial behaviors of preschoolers. Children were classified as DRD4-L (n = 27) if they had at least one DRD4 allele with six to eight repeats and as DRD4-S (n = 35) if not. Parent-child interactions were coded when children were 3-4 years old. Peer interaction data and parent questionnaires were collected at age 5. DRD4-L children shared less with each other and parents were less sensitive during parent-twin triadic in

Our objective was to examine the overlap between autistic traits and other behavioral problems in a general population sample, and explore the extent to which this overlap is due to genetic or environmental factors. Youth Self Report (YSR) data were collected in a general population sample of 424 twin pairs at 18 years of age, and their nontwin siblings. In 197 of these twin families, self-report ratings on the Autism-spectrum Quotient (AQ) were collected. Stepwise backward regression analyses revealed that of all 8 YSR syndrome scales, the Withdrawn Behavior (WB) and Social Problems (SOC) sca

In humans and other animals, behavioral responses to threatening stimuli are an important component of temperament. Among children, extreme behavioral inhibition elicited by novel situations or strangers predicts the subsequent development of anxiety disorders and depression. Genetic differences among children are known to affect risk of developing behavioral inhibition and anxiety, but a more detailed understanding of genetic influences on susceptibility is needed. Nonhuman primates provide valuable models for studying the mechanisms underlying human behavior. Individual differences in threat

The feeding behavior of vectors influences the likelihood of pathogen invasion and the exposure of humans to vector-borne zoonotic pathogens. We used multilocus microsatellite genetic typing of an introduced mosquito vector and DNA sequencing of mosquito blood meals to determine the impact of hybrid ancestry on feeding behavior and the emergence of West Nile virus (WNV). The probability of ancestry of Culex pipiens mosquitoes from two bionomically divergent forms, form molestus and form pipiens, influenced the probability that they fed on humans but did not explain a late summer feeding shift

As the largest interhemispheric commissure in the brain, the corpus callosum is of particular interest in disorders that may preferentially affect white matter development such as Williams syndrome (WS). Individuals with WS possess a remarkable array of neurobehavioral peaks and valleys, including deficits in visuospatial ability, mathematics, and attention, but with relative preservation of language and affect. Our study measured the corpus callosum and its primary subdivisions using high-resolution MRI in 20 individuals with WS (13 females and seven males; mean age 28.5, SD 8.3 years; range

Human alcoholics are almost invariably heavy users of tobacco, perhaps because both ethanol and nicotine may have anxiolytic activity. However, studies in humans have not uniformly detected anxiolytic effects because significant individual differences in anxiolytic actions of these agents seem to exist. One factor that seems to contribute to these individual differences is tolerance to ethanol. Individuals who are more sensitive to depressant actions of alcohol seem to show anxiolytic actions more readily. Consequently, we examined the relative sensitivities of the ethanol-sensitive (to the an

Mediation analysis identifies variables that explain the causal pathways linking an exposure (here genetic susceptibility to obesity) to an outcome (here obesity-related traits), offering potential targets for weight management interventions. This review followed the PRISMA guidelines and systematically searched the literature up to August 2024 in four databases (Web of Science, Embase, Medline, CINAHL) to identify studies using mediation analysis with genetic or polygenic risk scores of obesity as exposure and body mass index (BMI) as outcome. Twenty-nine studies focusing on eating behaviors,

BACKGROUND: Disturbed sleep and activity are prominent features of bipolar disorder type I (BP-I). However, the relationship of sleep and activity characteristics to brain structure and behavior in euthymic BP-I patients and their non-BP-I relatives is unknown. Additionally, underlying genetic relationships between these traits have not been investigated.
METHODS: Relationships between sleep and activity phenotypes, assessed using actigraphy, with structural neuroimaging (brain) and cognitive and temperament (behavior) phenotypes were investigated in 558 euthymic individuals from multi-genera

We examined the genetic underpinnings of problem behavior in children and adolescents (4-17 years old) by leveraging a within-family trio design using data of European ancestry from the Lifelines cohort (N=3,160-4,611). We estimated direct genetic effects of educational attainment (EA) polygenic indices (PGIs), as a whole and decomposed into cognitive (Cog) and non-cognitive (NonCog) components via GWAS-by-subtraction, on a comprehensive set of internalizing and externalizing behaviors assessed via self- and parental report Achenbach System of Empirically Based Assessment (ASEBA) measures. The cerebellum is a major target of alcohol-induced damage in the developing brain. However, the cerebella of some children are much more seriously affected than others by prenatal alcohol exposure. As a consequence of in utero alcohol exposure, some children have substantial reductions in cerebellar volume and corresponding neurodevelopmental problems, including microencephaly, ataxia, and balance deficits, while other children who were exposed to similar alcohol quantities are spared. One factor that likely plays a key role in determining the impact of alcohol on the fetal cerebellum is gene

Alcoholism is often associated with other forms of drug abuse, suggesting that innate predisposing factors may confer vulnerability to addiction to diverse substances. However, the neurobiological bases of these factors remain unknown. Here, we have used a combination of imaging, neurochemistry and behavioral techniques to investigate responses to the psychostimulant amphetamine in Marchigian Sardinian (msP) alcohol-preferring rats, a model of vulnerability to alcoholism. Specifically, we employed pharmacological magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the neural circuits engaged by amphetam

Migration is the riskiest portion of the annual breeding cycle, with long-distance migratory birds enduring long periods of varied landscapes, dangerous weather, and geographical barriers such as long stretches of open water. Therefore, birds utilize a combination of both innate (i.e., genetic) and environmental cues to maximize their chances of survival during migration. Studies have suggested that short-distance migrants are more likely to adjust migration timing to match non-endogenous cues like local weather conditions, while long-distance migrants rely heavily on genetically-ingrained beh

Dopamine and noradrenaline have conserved roles in control of physiology and behaviors of vertebrates. However, vertebrate genetic models completely devoid of catecholamines are not available. We generated genetically catecholamine-free zebrafish larvae by combining mutations in all three genes involved in L-DOPA biosynthesis: the tyrosine hydroxylase genes th and th2, and tyrosinase tyr. Here we show that catecholamine-deficient 5 day-old zebrafish larvae are viable and develop an anatomically normal nervous system, including the full complement of catecholaminergic neuron somata and projecti

BACKGROUND: The observational research indicates that risky sexual activities contribute to the development of mental disorders. However, the potential causal effects of sexual behaviors, sildenafil use, and hormonal contraceptive use on mental disorders remain unclear.
METHODS: We applied two-sample Mendelian randomization (univariable and multivariable MR) to assess the effects of age at first sex (AFS) and number of sexual partners (NSP) on mental disorders and sex differences, using Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) data from UK Biobank and FinnGen. An observational analysis using NH

BACKGROUND: Feeding and rumination behaviors in cattle are genetically associated with feed efficiency and growth traits. However, other behavioral traits such as lying, standing, and moving remain less studied. Moreover, the genetic relationships between behavioral traits and carcass traits are poorly understood in beef cattle. This study analyzed seven behavioral classes-feeding, lying, moving, standing, ruminating, ruminating while lying, and ruminating while standing-measured using wearable sensors in 1032 Japanese Black cattle and investigated their genetic correlations with carcass trait

Mosquito behavior has long been studied because of its importance in the spread of human disease. More recently, mosquitoes have emerged as a model for studying olfaction, given their exquisite ability to locate human hosts. Host seeking unfolds through a series of behavioral phases, including activation, flight, landing, blood feeding, and oviposition, making it well suited for study across multiple levels. In this review, we focus on methodological advances that have shaped the study of mosquito host-seeking behavior, with a focus on the Yellow Fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti. We highlight thr
