Schistosome research has entered the genomic era with the publications reporting the Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma japonicum genomes. Schistosome genomics is motivated by the need for new control tools. However, much can also be learned about the biology of Schistosoma, which is a tractable experimental model. In this article, we review the recent achievements in the field of schistosome research and discuss future perspectives on genomics and how it can be integrated in a usable format, on the genetic mapping and how it has improved the genome assembly and provided new research approach

We review the underlying principles and tools used in genomic studies of domestic dogs aimed at understanding the genetic changes that have occurred during domestication. We show that there are two principle modes of evolution within dogs. One primary mode that accounts for much of the remarkable diversity of dog breeds is the fixation of discrete mutations of large effect in individual lineages that are then crossed to various breed groupings. This transfer of mutations across the dog evolutionary tree leads to the appearance of high phenotypic diversity that in actuality reflects a small num

Atopic dermatitis and psoriasis are two chronic skin inflammatory diseases that have so far received a greater attention within the scientific community through different post-genomic approaches; on the contrary, acne, which is undoubtedly one of the most common skin disorders involving inflammatory processes, seems to be still quite neglected under the post-genomic point of view. In this paper, we will review how post-genomic technologies have provided new fundamental tools for the analysis of these three conditions and we will cast light on their potential in addressing future research chall

Ethanolamine can be used as a source of carbon and nitrogen by phylogenetically diverse bacteria. Ethanolamine-ammonia lyase, the enzyme that breaks ethanolamine into acetaldehyde and ammonia, is encoded by the gene tandem eutBC. Despite extensive studies of ethanolamine utilization in Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, much remains to be learned about EutBC structure and catalytic mechanism, about the evolutionary origin of ethanolamine utilization, and about regulatory links between the metabolism of ethanolamine itself and the ethanolamine-ammonia lyase cofactor adenosylcobalamin. SFRP1, SFRP2, SFRP3, SFRP4, SFRP5, WIF1, DKK1, DKK2, DKK3, DKK4 are secreted-type WNT signaling modulators. SFRP1 tumor suppressor gene at human chromosome 8p11.21 is inactivated in colorectal cancer and other tumors by deletion and by epigenetic CpG hypermethylation. Here, we identified and characterized the rat Sfrp1 gene by using bioinformatics. Rat Sfrp1 gene, consisting of three exons, was located within AC112899.4 genome sequence. Complete coding sequence of rat Sfrp1 was determined by assembling AC112899.4 genome sequence, CK838748 EST, and BF417482 EST. Rat Sfrp1 (314 aa) consisted of

Sequencing of the Rickettsia conorii genome and its comparison with its closest sequenced pathogenic relative, i.e., Rickettsia prowazekii, provided powerful insights into the evolution of these microbial pathogens. However, advances in our knowledge of rickettsial diseases are still hindered by the difficulty of working with strict intracellular bacteria and their hosts. Information gained from comparing the genomes of closely related organisms will shed new light on proteins susceptible to be targeted in specific diagnostic assays, by new antimicrobial drugs, and that could be employed in th

Infectious diseases remain a major cause of deaths and disabilities in the world, the majority of which are caused by bacteria. Although immunisation is the most cost effective and efficient means to control microbial diseases, vaccines are not yet available to prevent many major bacterial infections. Examples include dysentery (shigellosis), gonorrhoea, trachoma, gastric ulcers and cancer (Helicobacter pylori). Improved vaccines are needed to combat some diseases for which current vaccines are inadequate. Tuberculosis, for example, remains rampant throughout most countries in the world and re

The draft human genome sequence is an important step in cataloguing the molecular hardware that supports the processes of life. Here I look at what we have learned from the draft sequence about our cytoskeletal and motility systems. Most cytoskeletal and motility proteins were discovered previously by biochemical isolation, traditional cloning methods or random sequences of complementary DNAs. The ongoing challenges of assembling and annotating genes for motor proteins with long, fragmented coding sequences emphasize the importance of expert knowledge of related proteins and confirmatory evide

Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccines have been given to more people than any other vaccine. They have also probably resulted in as much controversy as any other vaccine. In clinical trials, the efficacy of BCG vaccination against pulmonary TB has been widely variable. At the same time, a number of investigators have observed phenotypic differences between BCG daughter strains, raising the possibility that differences between BCG products may in some way translate into different outcomes. With recent genomic analysis of BCG strains, it has become possible to piece together the molecular event

Large-scale genomic medicine implementation efforts are presenting relevant and authentic opportunities for the health workforce to learn genomics in the workplace, particularly from genomic expert colleagues or 'champions'. This paper presents novel insights on genomic experts' role and influence on learning genomics from the perspective of physicians not trained in genetics. As part of a study on workplace learning of genomics, longitudinal qualitative datasets were collected in 2021-2023 from ten non-genetics physicians working in hospitals in Victoria, Australia. Reflexive thematic analysi

Globally, the utility of pathogen genomics for public health was highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Approaches to enhance coordination and improve implementation of pathogen genomics for public health are needed. The Communicable Diseases Genomics Network (CDGN) was established in 2015 in Australia. The network, embedded at the public health laboratory interface and supported by the Australian Government, has facilitated a coordinated model in Australia for public health pathogen genomics. CDGN activities have facilitated pilot projects to demonstrate use cases, harmonisation of data sharin

Spatial transcriptomic and proteomic atlases have enabled mapping of gene programs within intact tissues, but these measurements remain largely descriptive and do not define the mechanisms controlling tissue biology. Pooled CRISPR screening provides scalable causal interrogation of gene function but remains largely confined to dissociated systems that lack spatial context. In vivo spatial functional genomics (SFG) bridges these approaches by integrating genetic perturbations with in situ transcriptomic and proteomic readouts to measure gene function within intact tissue ecosystems. By preservi

The Fabaceae family, the third-largest among flowering plants, is nutritionally vital, providing rich sources of protein, dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Leguminous plants, such as soybeans, peas, and chickpeas, typically contain two to three times more protein than cereals like wheat and rice, with low fat content (primarily unsaturated fats) and no cholesterol, making them essential for cardiovascular health and blood sugar management. Since the release of the soybean genome in 2010, genomic research in Fabaceae has advanced dramatically. High-quality reference genomes have been assem

The analysis and comparison of genomes rely on different tools for tasks such as annotation, orthology prediction, and phylogenetic inference. Most tools are specialized for a single task, and additional efforts are necessary to integrate and visualize the results. To fill this gap, we developed zDB, an application integrating a Nextflow analysis pipeline and a Python visualization platform built on the Django framework. The application is available on GitHub (https://github.com/metagenlab/zDB) and from the bioconda channel. Starting from annotated Genbank files, zDB identifies orthologs and infers

Wolfram Syndrome (WFS) is a rare, autosomal, recessive neurogenetic disorder that affects many organ systems. It is characterised by diabetes insipidus, diabetes mellites, optic atrophy, and deafness and, therefore, is also known as DIDMOAD. Nearly 15,000-30,000 people are affected by WFS worldwide, and, on average, patients suffering from WFS die at 30 years of age, usually from central respiratory failure caused by massive brain atrophy. The more prevalent of the two kinds of WFS is WFS1, which is a monogenic disease and caused by the loss of the WFS1 gene, whereas WFS2, which is more uncomm

Lactobacillus paracasei SLP 16 was obtained from liquor cellar mud, and it was analysed by genome sequencing on Illumina Hiseqq platform. Then the biological information of L. paracasei SLP16 was analysed by ExPasy (website), and the toxin safety of the strain SLP 16 was analysed by PSI/PHI in the virulence factor database VFDB. Through the second-generation DNA sequencing platform technology, the whole genome information of L. paracasei SLP16 was obtained, which showed that the genome size of the strain SLP 16 was 2·65 mol l-1 , and the GC content of the strain SLP 16 was 46·9%. Eating behaviours may be expressions of genetic risk for obesity and are potential antecedents of later eating disorders. However, childhood eating behaviours are heterogeneous and transient. Here we show associations between polygenic scores for body mass index (BMI-PGS) and anorexia nervosa (AN-PGS) with eating behaviour trajectories during the first 10 years of life using data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), n = 7,825. Results indicated that 1 s.d. increase in the BMI-PGS was associated with a 30-37% increased risk for early- and mid-childhood overeating.

Since the first description of Klinefelter syndrome (KS) was published in 1942 in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology, large inter-individual variability in the phenotypic presentation has been demonstrated. However, our understanding of the global impact of the additional X chromosome on the genome remains an enigma. Evidence from the existing literature of KS indicates that not just one single genetic mechanism can explain the phenotype and the variable expressivity, but several mechanisms may be at play concurrently. In this review, we describe different genetic mechanisms and recent adva
