Fibular hemimelia is the most common lower extremity congenital longitudinal deficiency leading to cosmetic deformity, pain, and gait disturbance. Eight-plate hemiepiphysiodesis has proven to be successful in correcting angular deformity of the knee; it is an easy surgical technique and yields a more rapid rate of correction. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of eight-plate hemiepiphysiodesis in bilateral genu valgum resulting from fibular hemimelia and overall height improvement in two girls and four boys with a mean age of 22 months who were followed up for a period of

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation has increased the survival of patients with Hurler syndrome. Genu valgum occurs frequently in untransplanted patients and has been noted in 52% of our patients after stable engraftment. No deformities spontaneously corrected. We describe the orthopaedic management of genu valgum in Hurler syndrome. Medial epiphyseal stapling predictably affects angular deformity in these patients. Recurrence of deformities either after staple dislodgement or surgical removal can occur, and repeated stapling may be required. Surgical epiphyseal stapling has a role in the

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is rare in children and may present with skeletal deformities. The present case report describes the case of a 12-year-old girl with progressive bilateral genu valgum and bone pain unresponsive to corrective osteotomy and supplementation. She had a prior episode of hypercalcemia during acute pancreatitis. Laboratory analyses revealed elevated calcium levels (12.2 mg/dl), markedly high levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH; 1,574 pg/ml), low vitamin D levels (13.3 ng/ml) and increased levels of alkaline phosphatase (2616 U/l). A neck ultrasonography revealed a ri

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate factors determining the final outcomes of hemipercutaneous epiphysiodesis using transphyseal screw (PETS) for the genu valgum, especially focusing on postoperative courses after screw removal.
METHODS: Fifty-five patients with idiopathic genu valgum treated with hemi-PETS were included. The mechanical lateral distal femoral angle (mLDFA) and medial proximal tibial angle (MPTA) were measured to calculate the degree of correction and rebound. Regarding factors related to surgical techniques, the number of screw threads beyond the physis, the

Genu valgum is a risk factor for patellar instability. The study purpose was to report on preliminary results of medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction and simultaneous growth modulation, in patients with patellar instability and genu valgum. A total of seven patients (eight knees) with MPFL reconstruction and medial transphyseal screw insertion for genu valgum correction were assessed using full-length radiographs. Genu valgum corrected from 13.1° to 3.7° at mean 11.7 months, without compromising patellar stability. One patient each had 6° overcorrection and 5° rebound valgus. G

BACKGROUND: Closing-wedge distal femoral osteotomy (CWDFO)-combined with medial reefing and lateral release, if necessary- has been used to treat recurrent patellar dislocation (RPD) with genu valgum.
PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical and radiologic outcomes of surgical treatment with CWDFO for treatment of RPD with genu valgum.
STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4.
METHODS: Fourteen consecutive patients (23 knees) with RPD and genu valgum were treated with CWDFO. Patients with a minimum 2-year follow-up period were eligible for this study. Patients with prior failed surgery were

BACKGROUND: The genu valgum deformity seen in the Ellis-van Creveld syndrome is one of the most severe angular deformities seen in any orthopaedic condition. It is likely a combination of a primary genetic-based dysplasia of the lateral portion of the tibial plateau combined with severe soft-tissue contractures that tether the tibia into valgus deformations. Progressive weight-bearing induces changes, accumulating with growth, acting on the initially distorted and valgus-angulated proximal tibia, worsening the deformity with skeletal maturation. The purpose of this study is to present a relati

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is relatively uncommon in children, and skeletal deformities due to it are even rarer in this age group. Less than 20 such cases have been reported in the English literature. We describe a case series of three patients who presented with genu valgum deformity and were found to have primary hyperparathyroidism on further evaluation. The cases were primarily managed by removing the adenoma and later taken up for correction of the skeletal deformity. Genu valgum deformity in children can occur secondary to hyperparathyroidism due to a pubertal growth spurt.

Genu valgum is a deformity that alters load transmission in the knee. While the effects of mild deviations are known, the specific quantitative impact of severe deformities (>15°) on the lateral meniscus remains understudied. This research aims to quantify the stress distribution in a severe 18° valgus deformity compared to a healthy morphology. A comparative Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was conducted. 3D models were reconstructed from segmented DICOM images using MIMICS and 3MATIC software. A static vertical load of 850 N, simulating a bipedal stance, was applied to both a healthy model and

Primary hyperparathyroidism in children and adolescents is rare and often symptomatic at presentation. A 15-year-old bo presented with bilateral genu valgum for two years. Biochemical results were consistent with primary hyperparathyroidism Calcium levels normalized two months after removal of a left inferior parathyroid adenoma.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: We report our experience with eleven patients treated for disabling genu valgum from 1979 to 1994.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Genu valgum resulted from femoral deformation in all patients. Ten had a congenital condition and one a post-traumatic knee. IKS scores were used for the clinical evaluation. The lateral femorotibial joint space and the lateral femoral angle (LFA) were measured on plain films. Goniometry was used to measure the axis of the loaded lower limb. All patients underwent osteotomy of the distal femur for varisation and plate fixation. One patient required rev

OBJECTIVE: Genu valgum is a common knee deformity in growing children. It alters the alignment of the lower extremity, body posture, and gait pattern of the children. Understanding of kinematic and kinetic parameters of gait in genu valgum is essential for planning and implementing the intervention to correcting the valgus deformity. The aim of this paper is to investigate the kinetic and kinematic gait differences in children with genu valgum.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 13-year old girl with left side unilateral genu valgum and a closely matched healthy counterpart were recruited to compare the

Three-dimensional gait analysis is capable of assessing dynamic load characteristics and the resulting compensatory effects of lower limb malalignment, which are generally not reflected in static imaging. This study determined differences in gait parameters in the frontal and transverse plane between patients and controls in order to identify compensatory mechanisms, and to correlate radiographic measurements and gait parameters in a consecutive series of children with idiopathic genu valgum. Thirty-three patients (mean age 12.3 years) were retrospectively reviewed and compared to a healthy co

Distal renal tubular acidosis is a disease that occurs when the kidneys do not remove acid properly into the urine, leaving the blood too acidic (called acidosis). Distal renal tubular acidosis (type I RTA) is caused by a defect in the kidney tubes that causes acid to build up in the bloodstream. It ultimately results rickets which include chronic skeletal pain, in skeletal deformities, skeletal fractures. Rickets is among the most frequent childhood diseases in many developing countries. Dental problems in rickets include delayed eruption of permanent teeth, premature fall of deciduous teeth,

From 1978 until 1984, 23 patients (24 knees) were treated with varus producing distal femoral osteotomy for painful, lateral compartment osteoarthrosis. Evaluation at five to 11 years (average, 8.3 years) included orthopedic examination, calculation of the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) knee score, and standing knee roentgenograms. Based on the objective knee scores, 71% of the patients had good or excellent results, with no difference in those followed for longer periods. Complications occurred in 63% of the cases, including nonunion (25%) and loss of correction (21%). Both complications

INTRODUCTION: Osteochondromas are among the most frequently encountered benign bone tumors, yet their association with progressive angular deformity in the coronal plane is uncommon. This case is, to our knowledge, not well characterized in the existing literature and highlights the possibility of contralateral deformity progression following unilateral surgical correction of a solitary osteochondroma.
CASE REPORT: We describe the clinical course of a young adult male who presented with a left distal femoral osteochondroma in 2022, managed surgically with concurrent correction of an associate

BACKGROUND: Accurate femoral rotational alignment is of vital importance for successful total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The value of computer-assisted surgery TKA (CAS-TKA) in increasing the accuracy of femoral rotational alignment remains controversial. We hypothesize that outcomes are related to the severity of preoperative varus and valgus deformity and that CAS-TKA may be beneficial under certain circumstances.
METHODS: Between January 2007 and December 2013, patients with osteoarthritis and varus angulation in the mechanical axis (MA) ≥ 15° and valgus angulation in the MA ≥ 10° (based on
