The Mobility of Mo during Microbially Mediated Ferrihydrite Phase Transformation.

Molybdenum (Mo) is an essential nutrient for almost all organisms. However, at high concentrations, it can be toxic to animals and plants. This study investigated the interactions of Mo(VI) with iron oxyhydroxides during ferrihydrite bioreduction in the presence of Fe(III)-reducing Geobacter sulfurreducens. Here, we showed that Mo concentration controlled ferrihydrite phase transformation, leading to Mo release. With the biotic reduction of ferrihydrite and Fe(II) production, Mo(VI) reduction and Mo(IV)O2 formation were observed for the first time, which further immobilized Mo after surface ad

Combined Biotic-Abiotic 2,4-Dinitroanisole Degradation in the Presence of Hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine.

The Department of Defense has developed new explosive formulations in which traditionally used cyclic nitramines such as hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) have been updated with the insensitive munition (IM) 2,4-dinitroanisole (DNAN). Understanding combined degradation of both compounds at explosive-contaminated sites will allow remediation approaches that simultaneously target both contaminants. DNAN reduction in the presence of RDX was evaluated in abiotic experiments using substoichiometric, stoichiometric, and superstoichiometric concentrations of ferrous iron and anthrahydroqu

Citric acid secretion from rice roots contributes to reduction and immobilization of Cr(VI) by driving microbial sulfur and iron cycle in paddy soil.

Root exudates released by plants can promote microbial growth and activity, thereby affecting the transformation and availability of soil pollutants. However, the effects of the root exudates of rice plants on chromium (Cr) transformation in paddy soils and the underlying mechanisms are yet to be elucidated properly. The present study investigated how rice root exudates interact with rhizosphere microorganisms to influence the transformation of Cr and explored the key components in root exudates that affect Cr(VI) reduction. The results showed that the addition of root exudate and citric acid

In situ TCE degradation mediated by complex dehalorespiring communities during biostimulation processes.

The bioremediation of chloroethene contaminants in groundwater polluted systems is still a serious environmental challenge. Many previous studies have shown that cooperation of several dechlorinators is crucial for complete dechlorination of trichloroethene to ethene. In the present study, we used an explorative functional DNA microarray (DechloArray) to examine the composition of specific functional genes in groundwater samples in which chloroethene bioremediation was enhanced by delivery of hydrogen-releasing compounds. Our results demonstrate for the first time that complete biodegradation

Electrode plate-culture methods for colony isolation of exoelectrogens from anode microbiomes.

Exoelectrogens play central roles in microbial fuel cells and other bioelectrochemical systems (BESs), yet their physiological diversity remains largely elusive due to the lack of efficient methods for the isolation from naturally occurring microbiomes. The present study developed an electrode plate-culture (EPC) method that facilitates selective colony formation by exoelectrogens and used it for isolating them from an exoelectrogenic microbiome enriched from paddy-field soil. In an EPC device, the surface of solidified agarose medium was spread with a suspension of a microbiome and covered wi

Key active mercury methylating microorganisms and their synergistic effects on methylmercury production in paddy soils.

Rice contamination with neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) from paddy soils is an escalating global concern. Identifying the microorganisms responsible for mercury (Hg) methylation in these soils is essential for controlling Hg contamination in the food chain and mitigating health impacts. Current research often focuses on total Hg-methylating microorganisms, overlooking the contributions of active ones, which can lead to either overestimating or neglecting the specific roles of microorganisms in Hg methylation within paddy soils. In this study, active Hg-methylating microorganisms in paddy soils

Sulfur microenvironments as hotspots for biogenic pyrite formation.

Pyrite (FeS2) is the end-product of bacterial sulfur cycling in reduced sedimentary environments. Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) are mostly considered for biogenic pyrite formation due to their significant contribution to sulfide production at ambient temperatures. However, most experiments using SRB for biogenic pyrite formation resulted in the formation of only metastable iron sulfide minerals such as mackinawite (FeS). In this study, we investigated the roles of elemental sulfur (S0) and microbial sulfur reduction for pyrite formation. To this end, we cultivated the Fe(III)- and sulfur-red

The screening of iron oxides for long-term transformation into vivianite to recover phosphorus from sewage.

The reducibility of iron oxides, depending on their properties, influences the kinetics of dissimilatory iron reduction (DIR) during vivianite recovery in sewage. This study elucidated the correlation between properties of iron oxides and kinetics of DIR during the long-term transformation into vivianite, mediated by Geobacter sulfurreducens PCA and sewage. The positive correlation between surface reactivity of iron oxides and reduction rate constant (k) influenced the terminal vivianite recovery efficiency. Akaganeite with the highest adhesion work and surface energy required the lowest reduc

Effect of Natural Organic Matter on the Fate of Cadmium During Microbial Ferrihydrite Reduction.

Natural organic matter (NOM) is known to affect the microbial reduction and transformation of ferrihydrite, but its implication toward cadmium (Cd) associated with ferrihydrite is not well-known. Here, we investigated how Cd is redistributed when ferrihydrite undergoes microbial reduction in the presence of NOM. Incubation with Geobacter sulfurreducens showed that both the rate and the extent of reduction of Cd-loaded ferrihydrite were enhanced by increasing concentrations of NOM (i.e., C/Fe ratio). Without NOM, only 3-4% of Fe(III) was reduced, but around 61% of preadsorbed Cd was released in

Nano-magnetite enhances dissimilated iron reduction to vivianite from sewage by structuring an enormous and compact electron transfer network.

Acting as both terminal and conductor of extracellular electron transfer (EET), little studies were focused on how nano-magnetite participated in the dissimilated iron reduction (DIR), especially the synthesis of vivianite, which was the typical DIR products from sewage. In this study, nano-magnetite was confirmed to enhance DIR of ferrihydrite and akaganeite for vivianite recovery from sewage. Nano-magnetite incorporation enriched Comamonas and Geobacter in sewage, and microbial protein content was increased by 123 % and 57 % in ferrihydrite and akaganeite batches, respectively. In Geobacter

Electrokinetic-Enhanced Bioremediation of Trichloroethylene-Contaminated Low-Permeability Soils: Mechanistic Insight from Spatio-Temporal Variations of Indigenous Microbial Community and Biodehalogenation Activity.

Electrokinetic-enhanced bioremediation (EK-Bio), particularly bioaugmentation with injection of biodehalogenation functional microbes such as Dehalococcoides, has been documented to be effective in treating a low-permeability subsurface matrix contaminated with chlorinated ethenes. However, the spatio-temporal variations of indigenous microbial community and biodehalogenation activity of the background matrix, a fundamental aspect for understanding EK-Bio, remain unclear. To fill this gap, we investigated the variation of trichloroethylene (TCE) biodehalogenation activity in response to indige

Elucidating applied voltage on the fate of antibiotic resistance genes in microbial electrolysis cell: Focusing on its transmission between anolyte and biofilm microbes.

Microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) system to treat wastewater containing antibiotics has been researched actively in past years. However, the fate of antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) in MEC is not fully revealed. The effect of applied voltage on the migration of ARGs between anolyte and biofilm microbes via examining the microbial physiology and abundances of macrolide resistance genes (MRGs) and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) was elucidated in this research. Results showed that the abundance of MRGs and MGEs was decreased in the anolyte, but their abundances were increased on the electrode bi

Electrochemical performance of microbial electrolysis cells based on an anode encapsulated in a cellulose acetate capsule.

Anode encapsulation in microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) offers a promising strategy to modulate microbial community structure and enhance electron transfer. We evaluated encapsulated (Capsule-MEC) and non-encapsulated (Control-MEC) systems over 117 days across four phases: inoculation with Geobacter sulfurreducens, inoculation with Geobacter metallireducens, supplementation with carbon black nanoparticles, and supplied artificial wastewater. The Capsule-MEC exhibited enhanced interfacial electron-transfer kinetics, with lower charge-transfer resistance (153.20 vs. 459.10 Ω cm2) and lower bi

Sub-MIC antibiotics affect microbial ferrihydrite reduction by extracellular membrane vesicles.

Environmental concentrations of antibiotics, usually below MIC, have significant biological effects on bacterial cells. Sub-MIC antibiotics exposure induces bacteria to produce outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). Recently, OMVs is discovered as a novel pathway for dissimilatory iron reducing bacteria (DIRB) to mediate extracellular electron transfer (EET). Whether and how the antibiotic-induced OMVs modulate iron oxides reduction by DIRB have not been studied. This study showed the sub-MIC antibiotics (ampicillin or ciprofloxacin) increased OMVs secretion in Geobacter sulfurreducens, and the antib

Humus-gradient adaptive laboratory evolution remodels electroactive microbial consortia to achieve cold-resistant bioelectrogenesis.

Low-temperature conditions trigger continuous humus accumulation in substrates, inhibiting extracellular electron transfer and reducing electrogenesis efficiency, which limits the practical performance and engineering application of constructed wetland-microbial fuel cells (CW-MFCs). Conventional physicochemical regulation strategies cannot fundamentally improve the intrinsic stress resistance of electroactive microbial consortia. Herein, a two-stage experimental workflow combining adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE) domestication and subsequent CW-MFC inoculation was established to obtain mix

Quinone-respiration improves dechlorination of carbon tetrachloride by anaerobic sludge.

The impact of humic acids and the humic model compound, anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS), on the biodegradation of carbon tetrachloride (CT) by anaerobic granular sludge was studied. Addition of both humic acids and AQDS at sub-stoichiometric levels increased the first-order rate of conversion of CT up to 6-fold, leading to an increased production of inorganic chloride, which accounted for 40-50% of the CT initially added. Considerably less dechlorination occurred in sludge incubations lacking humic substances. By comparison, very limited dechlorination occurred in sterile controls with au

Dissolved organic carbon drives nutrient cycling via microbial community in paddy soil.

Microbial mediated iron cycling drives the biogeochemical cycling of carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, and phosphorus. However, the fate of the microbial community and the relative metabolic pathways in paddy soil after the addition of biogas slurry are poorly understood. In this study, the response of functional genes was investigated by growing one-season rice in paddy soils in a pot experiment. Seven treatments were prepared: 1) control (CK); 2) organic carbon (OC); 3) fertilizer (F); 4) 5% of biogas slurry (B05); 5) 10% of biogas slurry (B10); 6) 15% of biogas slurry (B15); 7) 20% of biogas slurry

Microbial reductive dechlorination of trichloroethene to ethene with electrodes serving as electron donors without the external addition of redox mediators.

In situ bioremediation of industrial chlorinated solvents, such as trichloroethene (TCE), is typically accomplished by providing an organic electron donor to naturally occurring dechlorinating populations. In the present study, we show that TCE dechlorinating bacteria can access the electrons required for TCE dechlorination directly from a negatively polarized (-450 mV vs. SHE) carbon paper electrode. In replicated batch experiments, a mixed dechlorinating culture, also containing Dehalococcoides spp., dechlorinated TCE to cis-dichloroethene (cis-DCE) and lower amounts of vinyl chloride (VC) a

Microbial dynamics during and after in situ chemical oxidation of chlorinated solvents.

In situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) followed by a bioremediation step is increasingly being considered as an effective biphasic technology. Information on the impact of chemical oxidants on organohalide respiring bacteria (OHRB), however, is largely lacking. Therefore, we used quantitative PCR (qPCR) to monitor the abundance of OHRB (Dehalococcoides mccartyi, Dehalobacter, Geobacter, and Desulfitobacterium) and reductive dehalogenase genes (rdh; tceA, vcrA, and bvcA) at a field location contaminated with chlorinated solvents prior to and following treatment with sodium persulfate.
