Heroin mismatch in the Motor City: addiction, segregation, and the geography of opportunity.

In this article, the authors used data from economic and ethnographic interviews with heroin users from Detroit, Michigan, as well as other sources, to illustrate the relationship between heroin users' mobility patterns and urban and suburban environments, especially in terms of drug acquisition and the geography of opportunity. The authors found that although geographic location and social networks associated with segregation provided central city residents and African Americans with a strategic advantage over White suburbanites in locating and purchasing heroin easily and efficiently, this s

The geography of adult homelessness in the US: Validation of state and county estimates.

This study models geographic variations in the US in lifetime occurrence of homelessness, length of homeless experience, and point-in-time estimates based on socioeconomic, demographic, and disability indicators, among 13,931 respondents in the National Comorbidity Replication and the National Latino Asian American surveys. It uses a small area estimation methodology to estimate county and state levels of homelessness. This study demonstrates high validity for the state estimates, but not for counties. Overall, the model generates a point-in-time estimate of adult homeless persons at 377,000,

The geography of health in South-East Mexico: a research study and agenda.

Work on the geography of health has been undertaken in association with the Centro de Investigaciones Ecologicas del Sureste, Chiapas State, Mexico. An example is given from a study of relationships between housing and Chagas' disease in the village of Agua Azul in Chiapas. Prospects for future work in medical geography might involve further studies of Chagas' disease and onchocerciasis, and of the health of refugees and of populations involved in the exploitation of petroleum reserves.

Do regional geography and race influence management of chronic spontaneous urticaria?

Chronic spontaneous urticaria is defined as migratory evanescent pruritic blanching wheals that occur with variable frequency for 6 weeks or more, with or without accompanying angioedema. This condition affects approximately 0.1% to 1.4% of persons worldwide. Second-generation H1 antihistamines are the mainstay of management, with refractory cases often managed with an array of options, including H2 antihistamines, leukotriene receptor antagonists, glucocorticosteroids, immunosuppressive agents, and omalizumab. However, the degree of practice variation as to what treatments are prescribed is p

Legal-Spatial Consciousness: A Legal Geography Framework for Examining Migrant Illegality.

In this article, we advance the concept of legal-spatial consciousness-an individual's awareness of how law and space are mutually formed and influential on their lives. Through this concept, we explore how undocumented youth in a variety of American destinations understand and experience migrant illegality. By examining how immigration law and local places are imbricated, we demonstrate how immigrant illegality is defined not only by a patchwork of municipal, state, and federal laws, but also by how undocumented people move through these differently il/legal spaces in their everyday lives. Pokies and poverty: problem gambling risk factor geography in New Zealand.

Up to 2% of adults in New Zealand can be considered problem gamblers, where the activity has an impact on the well-being of those who gamble, and often their close associates. The most common activity involves non-casino gaming machines (NCGMs). This paper explores the geography of gambling 'opportunity' at small-area scales, and finds excess provision in those areas classified as highly deprived. Geographically weighted regression has been used to investigate the possibility that the degree of inequity in NCGM provision varies across New Zealand. As machines are licensed, this provides an opp

Biosocial influences of gender identity and geography on mucosal microbial phenotypes.

BACKGROUND: Transgender women (TGW) experience unique hormonal contexts and high HIV incidence, yet the mucosal microbiome among TGW remains understudied. Sex hormones and geography may shape microbial composition, but the relative contributions of gender identity, feminizing hormone therapy (FHT), and location are unclear. METHODS: We conducted a multi-site study of TGW using FHT and cisgender men who have sex with men (MSM), all without HIV, in Atlanta, USA (n = 58; 25 TGW, 33 MSM) and Bangkok, Thailand (n = 147; 97 TGW, 50 MSM)(n = 205). We also conducted longitudinal sampling in 21 TGW pr

Seasonality and geography of diabetes mellitus in United States of America dogs.

The diagnosis of type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM) in humans is associated with high altitude, few sunshine hours, cold climate, and winter. The goals of this study were to investigate seasonal and geographic patterns of DM diagnosis in United States of America (USA) dogs with juvenile and mature onset DM. Data were collected by means of an online survey widely distributed in the USA through breed clubs, academic veterinary institutions, private veterinary referral practices, social media outlets, and the American Kennel Club. Juvenile DM (JDM) and mature onset DM were defined as DM with an age of

Influence of climate and geography on the occurrence of Legionella and amoebae in composting facilities.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of Legionnaires' disease (LD) in southern Switzerland is three times higher than in northern Switzerland. Climatic and geographic factors may be potential causes for this difference. We studied the prevalence of Legionella and free-living amoebae (FLA) in compost and bioaerosol in two Swiss regions to understand the role of climate and geography in the transmission of LD. We also tried to investigate whether or not compost storage duration would influence the composition of Legionella and FLA communities. RESULTS: A larger proportion of compost heaps in facilities fro

Selection and geography shape male reproductive tract transcriptomes in Drosophila melanogaster.

Transcriptome analysis of several animal clades suggests that male reproductive tract gene expression evolves quickly. However, the factors influencing the abundance and distribution of within-species variation, the ultimate source of interspecific divergence, are poorly known. Drosophila melanogaster, an ancestrally African species that has recently spread throughout the world and colonized the Americas in the last roughly 100 years, exhibits phenotypic and genetic latitudinal clines on multiple continents, consistent with a role for spatially varying selection in shaping its biology. Neverth

Typhoid Fever in nineteenth-century Colombia: between medical geography and bacteriology.

This paper analyses how the Colombian medical elites made sense of typhoid fever before and during the inception of bacteriological ideas and practices in the second half of the nineteenth century. Assuming that the identity of typhoid fever has to be understood within the broader concerns of the medical community in question, I show how doctors first identified Bogotá's epidemics as typhoid fever during the 1850s, and how they also attached specificity to the fever amongst other continuous fevers, such as its European and North American counterparts. I also found that, in contrast with the di

Pain maps from facial pain patients indicate a broad pain geography.

Two hundred consecutive female patients, who were referred to a university-based facial pain clinic, were asked to mark all painful sites on sketches showing the contours of a human body in the frontal and rear views. The drawings were analyzed with transparent templates containing 1875 (frontal view) and 1929 (rear view) square cells of equal size. The average patient scored 71.8 cells in the frontal and 99.7 cells in the rear view (corresponding to 3.8% and 5.2% of the maximum possible scores). In individual patient drawings, however, up to 42.7% and 44.9% of all cells were marked. Only 37 c

Host and geography shape microbial communities in Kenyan mosquitoes: insights from metatranscriptomics.

Mosquitoes harbor diverse microbial communities that influence their potential to transmit pathogens. However, the ecological drivers shaping these microbiomes, particularly in under-sampled regions like Africa, remain poorly resolved. We conducted a large-scale metatranscriptomic survey of 3,940 Aedes and Culex mosquitoes from diverse ecological zones across Kenya. Our analyses revealed that viruses dominated the overall transcriptome, while bacteria exhibited the greatest taxonomic richness. Geographic location emerged as the primary driver of microbial community structure, whereas host genu

Evaluating evidence for co-geography in the Anopheles-Plasmodium host-parasite system.

The often tight association between parasites and their hosts means that under certain scenarios, the evolutionary histories of the two species can become closely coupled both through time and across space. Using spatial genetic inference, we identify a potential signal of common dispersal patterns in the Anopheles gambiae and Plasmodium falciparum host-parasite system as seen through a between-species correlation of the differences between geographic sampling location and geographic location predicted from the genome. This correlation may be due to coupled dispersal dynamics between host and

Semantic-geography integrated spatiotemporal safety mapping for urban low-altitude airspace environments.

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) safety is becoming increasingly critical as UAV operations are integrated into urban service and transportation systems, creating an urgent need for risk representations that can support refined low-altitude airspace management. Existing urban safety maps are still mainly expressed as two-dimensional or height stratified representations, which cannot capture the continuous variation of risk with altitude and therefore remain inadequate for continuous low-altitude flight scenarios. This paper develops a continuous three-dimensional spatiotemporal safety mapping fra
