Muscle sonography is used in rheumatology, neurology, geriatrics, sports medicine and orthopedics. Muscular atrophy with fatty and connective tissue degeneration can be visualized and must be interpreted in conjunction with the sonographic findings of the supplying nerves. Sonography is becoming increasingly more important for the early diagnosis of sarcopenia in rheumatology, geriatrics and osteology. Even if its significance has not yet been conclusively clarified, many publications confirm the high reliability of the method. Sonography can ideally be used in addition to magnetic resonance i

The technique of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) was introduced in 1979 as a semi-invasive approach for children with the need for a gastric fistula in order to avoid an operative intervention. The suture pull-through method was rapidly established and is now omnipresent. Because scientific evidence is broadly missing, there is some uncertainty about the indications in geriatric medicine. Guidelines do not recommend the insertion of a PEG in patients with severe dementia and malnutrition. Tube feeding is mainly recommended as a temporary method for patients who cannot take oral nutri

Aging is a nearly universal phenomenon in biology only partially controlled by genetic endowment. Individuals and their organs age at varying rates. The kidneys manifest the aging process by steady loss of nephrons and a corresponding decrease in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) beginning about age 30 years. The mechanisms responsible for this observation is are elusive. However, defining chronic kidney disease based on arbitrary, fixed thresholds of GFR in the later phases of life can be problematical as it may over-diagnosis CKD in the elderly. A modest, persisting reduction of GFR (around 4

Due to the age-dependent changes of pharmacodynamic and pharmcokinetic, the frequency of undesirable side-effects of benzodiazepines is higher in geriatric patients. An increased sensitivity to benzodiazepines and their metabolites can induce extremely prolonged duration of action leading to unconsciousness and respiratory insufficiency. Because of an assumed postoperative "psychosyndrome", a 72-year-old patient was treated with high doses of diazepam combined with single doses of tramal, clonidin and ranitidin. This treatment was followed by the development of respiratory insufficiency requir

The effects of aging are important in the workup and treatment of incontinence after prostate treatment. While conservative measures should be discussed, geriatric patients can also be offered surgery, as the available treatments are safe and effective in this group. Artificial urinary sphincter implantation is appropriate in those who can operate the device, though they should be followed to ensure they can continue to use the device over time. A suburethral sling can be safe and efficacious in those with milder incontinence and is not affected by mental or physical decline.

Falls are a major cause of preventable death, injury, and reduced independence in adults aged 65 years and older. The American Geriatrics Society and British Geriatrics Society (AGS/BGS) published a guideline in 2001, revised in 2011, addressing common risk factors for falls and providing recommendations to reduce fall risk in community-dwelling older adults. In 2022, the World Falls Guidelines (WFG) Task Force created updated, globally oriented fall prevention risk stratification, assessment, management, and interventions for older adults. Our objective was to briefly summarize the new WFG, c

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition and dehydration are widespread in older people, and obesity is an increasing problem. In clinical practice, it is often unclear which strategies are suitable and effective in counteracting these key health threats.
AIM: To provide evidence-based recommendations for clinical nutrition and hydration in older persons in order to prevent and/or treat malnutrition and dehydration. Further, to address whether weight-reducing interventions are appropriate for overweight or obese older persons.
METHODS: This guideline was developed according to the standard operating procedu

Gerontological findings, especially the biomorphotic become more and more important not only for scientific stomatology, but also for general stomatological practice and its priority dealing with the periodontal problems and, moreover, as a result, in turn, for application in geriatrics. The first part of the mostly theoretical foresight will be followed by the attempt of a practical method and of preliminary results supposing a future simplification in the sense of a pantomographic method according to Paatero for the measurement of the alveolar regression.

The number of aged persons in the United States is rising steadily. Rehabilitation medicine is becoming increasingly involved in providing the care necessary to keep aging individuals in good health so that the onset of late life disability can be delayed and social independence be maintained for as long as possible. For this reason, education in geriatric rehabilitation must become an essential part of training programs for residents in physical medicine and rehabilitation. The curriculum of these programs must be broad based and must include many of the general aspects of geriatric medicine

Investigations for candidiasis of the skin and mucous membranes were done in 191 probands over 65 years of age, of whon 187 were occupants of an old people's home and 4 were having in-patient treatment. In the homes being tested Candida infections of the skin and mucous membranes were very numerous (48% and 26% of those investigated) comparable with the epidemics of thrush in premature and newborn units in previous years. Even the localisation of candidiasis was remarkably similar to that in the newborn and infant age groups (Candida mycosis of the external ear and intercrural area, generalise

A study was made of the Emergency Department records of 49 elderly (65 years old or older) and 49 middle-aged (40-64 years old) patients seen in an urban hospital's psychiatric emergency service. The data were compared for demographic and admission information, psychiatric treatment history, presenting complaints, symptoms, diagnoses, and final disposition status. For the elderly patients, the referral was more likely to be their first contact with psychiatric treatment, and they were more likely to be referred (accompanied) by family or friends than to be self-referred. Among the middle-aged

Background: The world's population is growing older. Inappropriate and irrational use of drugs in the elderly is a considerable health concern due to consequences such as increased morbidity and adverse drug events. This study aimed to evaluate the rationality of prescribing and determining the extent of inappropriate prescribing in a sample of geriatric patients in Tehran. Methods: This cross sectional study was performed on 1512 prescriptions of patients aged ≥ 65 years from 5 pharmacies affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences in 2014. Both stroke and falls are common conditions affecting the older adult. Despite stroke being considered a well-established major risk factor for falls, there remains no evidence for effective prevention strategies for falls specifically for stroke survivors. Previous observational studies evaluating falls risk factors in stroke have mainly been uncontrolled and found similar risk factors for stroke populations compared to general older populations. Specific risk factors, however, are likely to play a greater role in stroke survivors including unilateral weakness, hemisensory or visual neglect,

AIM: To study the efficacy and safety of pharmacological treatment of constipation in geriatrics.
METHODS: PubMed, MEDLINE, google scholar, and Ovid were searched to identify human studies performed on the use of laxatives in elderly with constipation, which were conducted between January 1990 and January 2013 using the specified keywords. Controlled studies that enrolled geriatric patients with a diagnosis of constipation and addressed the efficacy and/or the safety of pharmacological treatments were included. Studies were excluded from this review if they were non-controlled trials, case se

In 1973 a geriatric ward was set up as part of the general hospital Hoog-Laren (now part of 'Gooi-Noord'). Its function is the examination, observation and medical treatment of elderly patients showing disordered behaviour. In this article we describe the history, goals, organization and methods/activities of this geriatric ward. Experience taught us that disordered behaviour of elderly patients is not a matter of mental illness, but arises in general as result of a disturbance of the somato-psychic-social equilibrium. Before it is possible to start a specific treatment, we try to determine th

Globally, the population aged 65 years and over is growing faster than all other age groups. South Korea, in particular, is one of the most rapidly aging societies worldwide. With the increase in the older population, the incidence of urologic diseases has increased significantly along with that of chronic diseases. Urologic diseases are an important component of the health problems faced by an aging society. Among those, urinary incontinence and voiding dysfunction cause significant health and quality of life problems in older adults. To properly manage these diseases, especially in the field

Deficiencies in B-vitamins have recently been recognized as risk factors for stroke and dementia. With increasing age there is an increased prevalence of metabolic and nutritional changes leading to increased vulnerability of vitamin deficiency. Especially in geriatric patients, these changes can have effects on the nervous system that are often not recognized. Often, however, vitamins in particular are taken uncritically and attributed with a variety of unspecific properties. With regard to the knowledge about the water-soluble B vitamins (B6, B12, folic acid and homocysteine as well as B1), t
