Gestational weight gain in persons with HIV in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated gestational weight gain (GWG) in pregnant persons with HIV (PWH) enrolled in the Surveillance Monitoring for ART Toxicities study. DESIGN: This was a cohort study. METHODS: GWG was classified as excessive, adequate, or inadequate; weekly GWG in second and third trimesters was calculated using National Academy of Medicine standards. Adjusted modified Poisson and linear regression models were fit with generalized estimating equations to assess the association of antiretroviral treatment (ART) with GWG outcomes stratified by timing of ART initiation [at conception (ART-C

Maternal weight gain and pregnancy outcomes in twin gestations.

BACKGROUND: Data on the optimal gestational weight gain in twin pregnancies are limited. As a result, the Institute of Medicine currently provides only provisional recommendations on gestational weight gain in this population. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify the optimal range of gestational weight gain in twin pregnancies and to estimate the association between inappropriate gestational weight gain and adverse pregnancy outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort study of all women with twin pregnancies that were followed up in a single, tertiary center between 2000 and 2

Effect of smoking cessation on gestational and postpartum weight gain and neonatal birth weight.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association among smoking cessation, gestational and postpartum weight gain, and neonatal birth weight. METHODS: We analyzed prospectively collected data from 1,774 women with term singleton pregnancies. Smoking status during pregnancy was categorized as nonsmokers, smokers, and quitters; and smoking status 1 year postpartum as nonsmokers, smokers, relapsed quitters, and sustained quitters. The association between smoking status and gestational weight gain, weight gain 1 year postpartum, and neonatal birth weight was tested by linear regression analysis, and the asso

Associations between prepregnancy body mass index, gestational weight gain and weight catch-up in small-for-gestational-age children.

Inadequate gestational weight gain (GWG) was related with a higher incidence of small-for-gestational-age (SGA) births than appropriate GWG; however, the long-term association of maternal GWG with weight catch-up growth in SGA children remains unknown. The objective of this study is to evaluate the associations between prepregnancy body mass index (pBMI), GWG and weight catch-up patterns in SGA children. Data were from the Collaborative Perinatal Project, an American multicentre prospective cohort study. A total of 56,990 gravidas were recruited at the first prenatal visit, and children were f

Gestational Weight Gain and Birth Outcome: A Comparison of Methods of Accounting for Gestational Age.

Cross-sectional studies of total gestational weight gain (GWG) and perinatal outcomes have used different approaches to operationalize GWG and adjust for duration of gestation. Using birth records from California (2007-2017), Nevada (2010-2017), and Oregon (2008-2017), we compared 3 commonly used approaches to estimate associations between GWG and cesarean delivery, small-for-gestational-age birth, and low birth weight (LBW): 1) the Institute of Medicine-recommended GWG ranges at a given gestational week, 2) total weight gain categories directly adjusting for gestational age as a covariate, an

Digital Lifestyle Interventions to Support Healthy Gestational Weight Gain: Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Digital lifestyle interventions hold promise in supporting healthy gestational weight gain (GWG) during pregnancy. However, clarity on their key design and implementation features remains limited. The prevalence of excessive GWG and its associated maternal and infant health risks makes understanding the landscape of digital intervention characteristics critical. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to map current literature on digital lifestyle interventions designed to promote healthy GWG and to identify intervention characteristics, including behavior change techniques (BCTs), u

Binge-spectrum symptoms in their association with higher gestational weight gain.

OBJECTIVE: Gestational weight gain (GWG) above or below recommendations is common and has implications for parent and infant health. Bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorder during pregnancy have been associated with higher GWG. Yet, little research has examined the associations between binge-spectrum symptoms and GWG. Likewise, few interventions exist to adequately prevent GWG. The current study investigated a broad range of predictors of GWG, with the goal of identifying potentially modifiable risk factors. METHOD: We conducted secondary data analyses of a subsample of individuals from the

Associations between Gestational Weight Gain Adequacy and Neonatal Outcomes in Tanzania.

INTRODUCTION: Gestational weight gain (GWG) is associated with fetal and newborn health; however, data from sub-Saharan Africa are limited. METHODS: We used data from a prenatal micronutrient supplementation trial among a cohort of human immunodeficiency virus-negative pregnant women in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania to estimate the relationships between GWG and neonatal outcomes. GWG adequacy was defined as the ratio of the total observed weight gain over the recommended weight gain based on the Institute of Medicine body mass index-specific guidelines. Neonatal outcomes assessed were stillbirth, p

Maternofetal outcomes in early-onset gestational diabetes: does weight gain matter?

AIM: Women with early-onset gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) have overall lower gestational weight gain (GWG) compared to those with later-onset GDM, albeit with usually worse maternofetal outcomes. We intent to investigate the association between inadequate GWG and maternofetal outcomes in pregnant women with early-onset GDM. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of women with early-onset GDM based on the National Registry of GDM. Three study groups were defined according to the recommendations of the Institute of Medicine for GWG: excessive GWG (eGWG), adequate (aGWG) or insufficie

Maternal mental health and gestational weight gain in a Brazilian Cohort.

Depression and anxiety are common during pregnancy, but little is known about the influence of these disorders on gestational weight gain (GWG). Data from a prospective cohort of pregnant women followed in a public healthcare center in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were used to evaluate the association of depression, anxiety, and suicide risk with GWG. GWG was evaluated at 5-13, 20-26, 30-36, and 37-42 weeks, and GWG adequacy was determined. Statistical analyses included linear mixed-effect models and Poisson regression. We evaluated 206 women, in which 15% (n = 31) presented major depressive disord

Factors Associated With Excessive Gestational Weight Gain: Review of Current Literature.

BACKGROUND: Excessive gestational weight gain (EGWG) places women at increased risk for complications during pregnancy and also increases the likelihood that they will remain overweight after pregnancy. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) has recommended weight gain guidelines based on pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI), but evidence-based strategies to achieve these goals are limited. OBJECTIVE: This review discusses factors associated with EGWG with the goal of identifying targets for future intervention. METHODS: A search was performed using the PubMed database to identify all English-langua

Gestational weight gain, early pregnancy maternal adiposity distribution, and maternal hyperglycemia.

To estimate the effects of gestational weight gain (GWG), central adiposity and subcutaneous fat on maternal post-load glucose concentration, pregnant women [n = 413, 62% black, 57% with pregravid body mass index (BMI) ≥25] enrolled in a cohort study at ≤13 weeks gestation. GWG was abstracted from medical records. In a sub-sample of women (n = 214), waist circumference (WC), and biceps and triceps skinfold thicknesses were measured at enrollment. At 24-28 weeks gestation, post-load glucose concentration was measured using a 50-g 1-h oral glucose tolerance test. After adjustment for pre-pregnan
