A Wearable Force Myography-Based Armband for Recognition of Upper Limb Gestures.

Force myography (FMG) represents a promising alternative to surface electromyography (EMG) in the context of controlling bio-robotic hands. In this study, we built upon our prior research by introducing a novel wearable armband based on FMG technology, which integrates force-sensitive resistor (FSR) sensors housed in newly designed casings. We evaluated the sensors' characteristics, including their load-voltage relationship and signal stability during the execution of gestures over time. Two sensor arrangements were evaluated: arrangement A, featuring sensors spaced at 4.5 cm intervals, and ar

The significance of clumsy gestures in apraxia following a left hemisphere stroke.

Individuals who sustain a cerebrovascular accident (CVA) in the dominant (typically left) hemisphere, are at increased risk of developing motor skill deficits due to motor-sensory impairments, as well as cognitive impairments (e.g., apraxia). Clumsiness is a central component affecting motor skills in individuals with a left hemisphere CVA (LCVA). The term "clumsiness" however, has not been adequately operationalised in the apraxia literature in clinical terms, thereby making diagnosis difficult and its contribution to apraxic disorders uncertain. Accordingly, in this study "clumsiness" was ex

A female advantage in the serial production of non-representational learned gestures.

Clinical research has demonstrated a sex difference in the neuroanatomical organization of the limb praxis system. To test for a corresponding sex difference in the functioning of this system, we compared healthy men and women on a gesture production task modeled after those used in apraxia research. In two separate studies, participants were taught to perform nine non-representational gestures in response to computer-generated color cues. After extensive practice with the gestures, the color cues were placed on a timer and presented in randomized sequences at progressively faster speeds. A de

EMG feedback and recovery of facial and speech gestures following neural anastomosis.

A case report is presented of an attempt to increase muscle activity during nonspeech and speech activities through surface electromyographic feedback. The subject, a 25-year-old male, had a surgical anastomosis of the seventh cranial to the twelfth cranial nerve five years prior to the initiation of this therapy. The right side of the face was immobile. Frequency analogs of muscle action potentials from the right lower lip during pressing, retraction, eversion, and speech were presented to the subject. His task was to increase the frequency of the tone thereby increasing muscle activity. The

Co-verbal gestures among speakers with aphasia: Influence of aphasia severity, linguistic and semantic skills, and hemiplegia on gesture employment in oral discourse.

UNLABELLED: The use of co-verbal gestures is common in human communication and has been reported to assist word retrieval and to facilitate verbal interactions. This study systematically investigated the impact of aphasia severity, integrity of semantic processing, and hemiplegia on the use of co-verbal gestures, with reference to gesture forms and functions, by 131 normal speakers, 48 individuals with aphasia and their controls. All participants were native Cantonese speakers. It was found that the severity of aphasia and verbal-semantic impairment was associated with significantly more co-ve

Wearable III-nitride optoelectronic chip for gesture recognition.

Wearable III-nitride optoelectronic chips with monolithically integrated optical transmitters and receivers have emerged as a low-cost and highly portable platform for light-based sensing systems. III-nitride-based multiple quantum well (MQW) diodes inherently exhibit overlapping emission and detection spectra due to multiple energy levels within the MQW active region, with a spectral overlap from 481.54 nm to 534.03 nm. Here, we develop III-nitride optoelectronic chips for a wearable gesture recognition system using light. Together with a flexible programmable circuit, identical MQW diodes on

Systematic Evaluation of sEMG Processing Pipelines for Gesture Recognition.

Gesture recognition enables intuitive human-robot communication, where surface electromyography (sEMG) provides a minimally invasive interface for detecting motor activity. However, the lack of systematic evaluation of processing pipelines represents a critical barrier to reliable subject-independent deployment. This work presents a systematic evaluation of sEMG processing pipelines for three-gesture recognition (Neutral, Ask, Take) using a Bagged Trees classifier under Leave-One-Subject-Out (LOSO) cross-validation across ten participants. A mixed-effects ANOVA over 1872 experimental configura

Simultaneous speech and gesture decoding for multimodal communication in paralysis.

Stroke and neurodegenerative diseases can impair speech and nonverbal gestures, limiting natural communication. Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) aim to restore these functions by translating neural activity into commands for external devices, although prior work has primarily focused on decoding speech or gestures in isolation. Here we show that neural signals recorded with a single high-density electrocorticography implant can support simultaneous decoding of speech and gestures in people with paralysis. We first show that isolated upper-limb and orofacial movements can be reliably decoded am

Speech-Gesture Matching and Schizotypal Traits: A Network Approach.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Impaired speech-gesture matching has repeatedly been shown in patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Here, we tested the hypothesis that schizotypal traits in the general population are related to reduced speech-gesture matching performance and reduced self-reports about gesture perception. We further explored the relationships between facets of schizotypy and gesture processing in a network model. STUDY DESIGN: Participants (1094 mainly healthy adults) were presented with concrete or abstract sentences accompanied with videos showing related or unrelated g

Visual Scene Understanding for Enhanced EMG Gesture Recognition.

This work presents a multimodal approach combining electromyography (EMG) and computer vision (CV) for robust real-time gesture recognition in a real-world setting. A context-aware framework is proposed for myoelectric prosthesis control, wherein EMG hand gesture recognition is augmented by the visual detection of objects of interest in a scene, effectively mitigating risks of false movements. By supporting EMG gesture predictions produced by a Siamese deep convolution neural network (SDCNN) with context derived from object detection using a tailored YOLO computer vision model, the system prev

Abnormal Gesture Perception and Clinical High-Risk for Psychosis.

Individuals diagnosed with psychotic disorders exhibit abnormalities in the perception of expressive behaviors, which are linked to symptoms and visual information processing domains. Specifically, literature suggests these groups have difficulties perceiving gestures that accompany speech. While our understanding of gesture perception in psychotic disorders is growing, gesture perception abnormalities and clues about potential causes and consequences among individuals meeting criteria for a clinical high-risk (CHR) syndrome is limited. Presently, 29 individuals with a CHR syndrome and 32 heal

A modular architecture for articulatory synthesis from gestural specification.

This paper proposes a modular architecture for articulatory synthesis from a gestural specification comprising relatively simple models for the vocal tract, the glottis, aero-acoustics, and articulatory control. The vocal tract module combines a midsagittal statistical analysis articulatory model, derived by factor analysis of air-tissue boundaries in real-time magnetic resonance imaging data, with an αβ model for converting midsagittal section to area function specifications. The aero-acoustics and glottis models were based on a software implementation of classic work by Maeda. The articulato

Structural brain correlates of defective gesture performance in schizophrenia.

INTRODUCTION: The neural correlates of impaired performance of gestures are currently unclear. Lesion studies showed variable involvement of the ventro-dorsal stream particularly left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) in gesture performance on command. However, findings cannot be easily generalized as lesions may be biased by the architecture of vascular supply and involve brain areas beyond the critical region. The neuropsychiatric syndrome of schizophrenia shares apraxic-like errors and altered brain structure without macroanatomic lesions. Schizophrenia may therefore qualify as a model disorder

A procedure for estimating gestural scores from speech acoustics.

Speech can be represented as a constellation of constricting vocal tract actions called gestures, whose temporal patterning with respect to one another is expressed in a gestural score. Current speech datasets do not come with gestural annotation and no formal gestural annotation procedure exists at present. This paper describes an iterative analysis-by-synthesis landmark-based time-warping architecture to perform gestural annotation of natural speech. For a given utterance, the Haskins Laboratories Task Dynamics and Application (TADA) model is employed to generate a corresponding prototype ge

Neural underpinnings of gesture discrimination in patients with limb apraxia.

Limb apraxia (LA), is a neuropsychological syndrome characterized by difficulty in performing gestures and may therefore be an ideal model for investigating whether action execution deficits are causatively linked to deficits in action understanding. We tested 33 left brain-damaged patients and 8 right brain-damaged patients for the presence of the LA. Importantly, we also tested all the patients in an ad hoc developed gesture recognition task wherein an actor performs, either correctly or incorrectly, transitive (using objects) or intransitive (without objects) meaningful conventional limb ge

Verbal and gestural communication in children with bilateral perisylvian polymicrogyria.

We assessed intelligence and receptive and expressive language skills in 6 children, ages 7 years 9 months to 12 years 4 months, with bilateral perisylvian polymicrogyria of variable extent and with dysarthria of different severity. In view of the recent findings of a close relationship between word and gesture, we also examined the communicative use of gesture. We found that mental retardation was related to the extent of cortical malformation; lexical comprehension, but not morphosyntactic comprehension, and verbal production were more compromised than expected from nonverbal intellectual ab

Dual-layer hand gestures decoding with wireless epidural braincomputer interface in a tetraplegia.

Spinal cord injury disrupts the neural connections between the brain and limbs, resulting in tetraplegia. Brain-computer interface (BCI) hold promise for enabling voluntary limb movements in tetraplegic patients, yet achieving fine motor control of the hand remains a challenge. Invasive BCI based on intracortical electrode arrays have demonstrated real-time multi-gesture decoding. However, their long-term safety is a major barrier in clinical applications. In this study, a tetraplegic patient was implanted with our recently developed wireless minimally invasive BCI, which records epidural fiel
