Comparative evaluation of chlorhexidine with or without hyaluronic acid on early periodontal wound healing.

Achieving uncomplicated tissue recovery remains a major challenge after periodontal surgery. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate the 10 gingivectomy patients presenting with gingival enlargement. Post-operatively, participants used either a combined 0.2% CHX+HA rinse or CHX alone. The CHX+HA cohort exhibited significantly superior early-stage wound healing outcomes. Thus, data shows combining chlorhexidine with hyaluronic acid enhances early periodontal tissue healing.

Surgical management of gingival overgrowth associated with Cowden sydrome: a case report and current understanding.

Cowden syndrome, also known as multiple hamartoma syndrome, is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by multiple hamartomas and a high risk of development of malignancy. Oral findings, such as papillomatous lesions and fibromas, are common features; however, a periodontal phenotype has not been reported previously. Therefore, this report presents a case of gingival overgrowth associated with Cowden syndrome, its successful surgical management, and the 12-month follow-up results. Additionally, we discuss the implications for clinicians. A 23-year-old woman was referred to the Departm

Periodontal plastic interceptive surgery for a labially impacted maxillary canine: a case report.

Management of an impacted canine often leads to an inadequate width of attached gingiva, which can be a possible risk for future gingival recession and associated complications. Uncovering a labially impacted maxillary canine can be performed by gingivectomy, apically positioned flap surgery, or a closed eruption technique. Choosing the right technique is sometimes confusing. The authors present a case that was managed by apically positioned flap surgery followed by orthodontic treatment.

Localized Juvenile Spongiotic Gingival Hyperplasia: Report of Two Cases.

OBJECTIVE: Localized juvenile spongiotic gingival hyperplasia (LJSGH) is a painless gingival swelling that histologically exhibits hyperplasia of the non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium, intercellular edema and spongiosis of the spinus layer, and exocytosis of inflammatory cells. LJSGH pathogenesis remains to be elucidated, while a possible origin from the gingival sulcus epithelium is nowadays proposed. STUDY DESIGN: We report two cases of LJSGH with immunohistochemical evaluation of cytokeratins (CKs) 18 and 19. RESULTS: Both cases concerned 12-year-old boys, who presented with

Laser and radiosurgery in veterinary dentistry.

Lasers and radiosurgery frequently used in human dentistry are rapidly entering veterinary dental use. The carbon dioxide, diode, and low-level therapy lasers have features including hemostasis control, access to difficult to reach areas, and decreased pain, that make them useful for oral surgery. Periodontal pocket surgery, gingivectomy, gingivoplasty, gingival hyperplasia, operculectomy, tongue surgery, oropharyngeal inflammation therapy, oral mass surgery, crown, and frenectomy laser surgeries are described, including images.

Recession in sites with inadequate width of the keratinized gingiva. An experimental study in the dog.

The present investigation was performed to assess the inflammatory response in gingival units subsequent to the placement of restorations with subgingivally located margins. 3 beagle dogs were used. Cotton floss ligatures were placed around the neck of the mandibular third and fourth premolars of all dogs. The ligatures were exchanged once a month during the first 6 months of experiment. When 40-50% of the height of the supporting tissues had been lost in an experimental periodontitis the ligatures were removed but the animals allowed to accumulate deposits for another 60 days. The inflamed pe

Management of Severe Periodontal Disease and Gingival Enlargement in a Dwarf Mongoose (Helogale parvula).

Development of gingival enlargement and periodontitis is described in a young dwarf mongoose. Repeated treatments resulted in gingival resection and histologic evaluation however gingival enlargement was ultimately responsive to extraction of associated teeth. In cases such as these, surgical extraction of teeth associated with severe recurrent gingival enlargement should be considered to avoid the stress and risk of repeated immobilizations.

Nonsyndromic with Recurrent Idiopathic Gingival Fibromatosis: A Rare Case Report.

Idiopathic gingival fibromatosis is a genetic rare disorder, which is characterized by a progressive enlargement of the gingiva. Gingival enlargement is an overgrowth of the gingiva, which can be caused by various etiological factors such as poor oral hygiene, plaque accumulation, inadequate nutrition, hormonal stimulation, several blood dyscrasias, or long-term intake of certain drugs like phenytoin, nifedipine, or cyclosporine. A 14-year-old female patient reported to the Department of Periodontology, Mahatma Gandhi Dental College and Hospital, Jaipur, Rajasthan with her chief complaint of s

Gingival fibromatosis with congenital hypertrichosis.

Idiopathic gingival fibromatosis is a slowly progressive proliferative fibrous lesion of the gingival tissue, leading to functional, esthetic, and psychological difficulties. This entity is mainly associated with hypertrichosis and epilepsy either as an isolated disorder or as part of a syndrome. We present a case report of a female with severe generalized gingival fibromatosis and hypertrichosis which was treated by conventional gingivectomies under local anesthesia. Postoperative healing was uneventful with a marked improvement in patient's appearance and oral hygiene.

Esthetic crown lengthening: appropriate diagnosis for achieving gingival balance.

A gummy smile poses a restorative challenge for dentists attempting to achieve ideal esthetics. Many have advocated the use of a gingivectomy or laser-assisted gingival contouring procedure. However, this simplistic approach can potentially create a mucogingival defect or a biological width violation. To avoid these periodontal-restorative complications, it is important during treatment planning to assess the anatomical relationship that resulted in the gummy smile and choose the appropriate surgical treatment to eliminate this condition.

Use of the CO2 laser in soft tissue and periodontal surgery.

The use of laser energy is by now established in some areas of the medical and dental professions. This article reviews the history of the carbon dioxide laser and discusses the advantages, indications, and contraindications of laser in soft tissue and periodontal surgery. Four clinical cases are presented to illustrate laser techniques in excisional biopsy, gingivectomy, coagulation of graft donor site, and a frenectomy procedure. The learning objective of this article is to familiarize the reader with this relatively new addition to oral surgical procedures.

Unusual gingival enlargement: a rare case report.

This is an atypical case report of a 20-year-old male patient who suffered from unusual unilateral, gingival enlargement together with rapidly progressive alveolar bone loss. The enlarged gingiva completely covered his left posterior teeth in both arches. The patient was diagnosed with gingival fibromatosis and aggressive periodontitis based on the clinical, histological, and radiographic findings. The gingival enlargement was treated by conventional gingivectomy under local anaesthesia. The postoperative result was uneventful.

Non syndromic gingival fibromatosis in a mild mental retardation child.

Gingival fibromatosis is a benign oral condition characterized by enlargement of gingival tissues. It usually develops as an isolated disorder but can be one of the features of a syndrome. This case report is of a 5-year-old male with severe gingival hyperplasia and mild mental retardation which was complicated by open bite, abnormal occlusion, open lip posture, and disabilities associated with mastication and speech. Full mouth gingivectomy in single sitting under general anesthesia was done with electrocautery.

[Nasotracheal fiberoptic intubation under remifentanil for sedation and analgesia in a boy with a difficult airway due to giant gingival hypertrophy].

A 9-year-old boy diagnosed with gingival hypertrophy and with a history of West syndrome and associated low platelet levels underwent gingival reduction surgery. Because difficult intubation was foreseen, the fiberoptic tube was inserted through the nose with the patient breathing spontaneously under remifentanil for sedation and analgesia. The procedure was carried out under balanced general anesthesia and with standard monitoring. At the end of gingivectomy, a tracheostomy was performed and the patient was transferred to the pediatric intensive care unit for postoperative observation.

The apically repositioned flap in tooth exposure.

Methods of exposing impacted teeth in order to bring them into the line of the arch include gingivectomy, the apically repositioned flap and closed eruption techniques. These procedures aim to facilitate the eruption of the impacted tooth with a minimum of disruption or damage to the tooth itself or adjacent structures. The aim of this paper is to discuss the various surgical methods of exposing impacted teeth and to help to identify where the use of the apically repositioned flap is indicated. Clinical examples are presented and a surgical method for carrying out this procedure recommended.

Effect of treatment on cyclosporine- and nifedipine-induced gingival enlargement: clinical and histologic results.

The clinical and histologic responses to periodontal treatment of gingival enlargements, induced when cyclosporine and nifedipine were administered singly or in combination, were evaluated. A significant correlation was noted between plaque, gingivitis, and gingival overgrowth. Severity of enlargement appeared to be greater in patients on combined therapy. All treatment approaches such as scaling, root planning, gingivectomy, and periodontal flaps, and a combination of therapies, were effective in the management of gingival overgrowth up to 1 year after completion of treatment. Adjunctive use

Hereditary gingival fibromatosis in children: a systematic review of the literature.

OBJECTIVES: Hereditary gingival fibromatosis (HGF) is an uncommon, inherited condition with slow and progressive fibrous hyperplasia of the gingiva. Due to its association with mastication, speech, and occlusion problems, early diagnosis is important. We sought to summarize the available data regarding the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, and outcomes of children with HGF (< 18 years). METHODS: A systematic literature review of the MEDLINE and Cochrane Library databases was conducted with respect to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement (end-o
