Ginkgo biloba extract improves coronary blood flow in healthy elderly adults: role of endothelium-dependent vasodilation.

Advancing age decreases endothelial function; accordingly, it alters the physiological regulation of coronary blood flow. Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) has well-documented anti-ageing effects. However, little is yet known about the pharmacological actions of GBE on endothelial dysfunction and coronary blood flow in healthy elderly adults. We designed the study to test the effects of GBE on distal left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) blood flow and endothelium-dependent brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD) in healthy elderly adults. Sixty healthy elderly adults were randomly ass

Ginkgo biloba extract alleviates deltamethrin-induced testicular injury by upregulating SKP2 and inhibiting Beclin1-independent autophagy.

BACKGROUND: Male infertility is a worldwide concern that is associated with a decline in sperm quality. Environmental pollutants such as deltamethrin (DM) have harmful effects on male reproductive organs. By maintaining intracellular redox homeostasis, ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) can alleviate male reproductive dysfunction. However, research on the mechanisms by which GBE alleviates reproductive toxicity induced by DM is limited. PURPOSE: In this study, we investigated whether GBE can alleviate DM-induced testicular and Sertoli cell reproductive toxicity by modulating SKP2 and Beclin1, thus p

Ginkgo biloba extract (EGb-761) confers neuroprotection against ischemic stroke by augmenting autophagic/lysosomal signaling pathway.

Ginkgo biloba extract (EGb-761) is well-recognized to have neuroprotective properties. Meanwhile, autophagy machinery is extensively involved in the pathophysiological processes of ischemic stroke. The EGb-761 is widely used in the clinical treatment of stroke patients. However, its neuroprotective mechanisms against ischemic stroke are still not fully understood. The present study was conducted to uncover whether the pharmacological effects of EGb-761 can be executed by modulation of the autophagic/lysosomal signaling axis. A Sprague-Dawley rat model of ischemic stroke was established by midd

Ginkgo biloba L. extract protects against chronic cerebral hypoperfusion by modulating neuroinflammation and the cholinergic system.

BACKGROUND: Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE)-a widely used nutraceutical-is reported to have diverse functions, including positive effects on memory and vasodilatory properties. Although numerous studies have assessed the neuroprotective properties of GBE in ischemia, only a few studies have investigated the neuro-pharmacological mechanisms of action of GBE in chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (CCH). PURPOSE: In the present study, we sought to determine the effects of GBE on CCH-induced neuroinflammation and cholinergic dysfunction in a rat model of bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (BCCAo).

Anti-amnestic properties of Ginkgo biloba extract on impaired memory function induced by aluminum in rats.

Aluminum is the most widely used non-ferrous metal. However, recently it is reported to be a neurotoxic agent that could induce biochemical defects in brain by affecting levels of neurotransmitters and generating reactive oxygen species resulting in oxidative stress. This study aimed at evaluating neuroprotective effect of Ginkgo biloba extract(2) (GBE) (200 mg/kg for 28 days) in antagonizing aluminum-induced neurotoxicity through investigating certain parameters such as serum aluminum level, brain aluminum content, brain regional distribution of aluminum, brain oxidative stress biomarkers' co

Ginkgo biloba extract improves spatial memory in rats mainly but not exclusively via a histaminergic mechanism.

In order to clarify the mechanism of Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) on learning and memory, we studied the effect of GBE on spatial memory deficits induced by diphenhydramine, pyrilamine and scopolamine using the eight-arm radial maze performance of rats, in comparison with donepezil. Total error (TE), reference memory error (RME) and working memory error (WME) were used as indices of spatial memory deficits. Both GBE and donepezil caused a potent antagonistic effect on the increase in TE, RME and WME induced by diphenhydramine. GBE and donepezil also antagonized scopolamine-induced spatial memor

Ginkgo biloba extracts prevent aortic rupture in angiotensin II-infused hypercholesterolemic mice.

Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) are a chronic vascular disease characterized by pathological luminal dilation. Aortic rupture is the fatal consequence of AAAs. Ginkgo biloba extracts (GBEs), a natural herb extract widely used as food supplements, drugs, and cosmetics, has been reported to suppress development of calcium chloride-induced AAAs in mice. Calcium chloride-induced AAAs do not rupture, while angiotensin II (AngII)-induced AAAs in mice have high rate of aortic rupture, implicating potentially different mechanisms from calcium chloride-induced AAAs. This study aimed to determine whet

In Vivo and In Vitro Toxicity Evaluation of Polyprenols Extracted from Ginkgo biloba L. Leaves.

Polyprenols of Ginkgo biloba L. leaves (GBP) are a new type of lipid with 14-24 isoprenyl units, which in humans have strong bioactivity like the dolichols. A large amount of work showed that GBP had good antibacterial activity and powerful protective effects against acute hepatic injury induced by carbon tetrachloride and alcohol, as well as antitumor activity, but the safety of GBP was not considered. The current study was designed to evaluate the toxicity of these polyprenols. Acute toxicity in mice was observed for 14 days after GBP oral dosing with 5, 7.5, 10, 15 and 21.5 g/kg body weight
