CLINICAL CONDITIONS FOUND RADIOGRAPHICALLY IN THE FRONT FEET OF RETICULATED GIRAFFE (GIRAFFA CAMELOPARDALIS RETICULATA) IN A SINGLE ZOO.

Front foot radiographs from 22 giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata) at one zoo were analyzed to better understand causes of lameness in this giraffe population. The herd had a history of front hoof overgrowth and intermittent lameness. Radiographic findings included distal interphalangeal joint osteoarthritis (OA), distal phalangeal bone (P3) osteitis, P3 fractures, P3 rotation, and sesamoid bone cysts. OA of the distal interphalangeal joint occurred in at least one front foot of 73% (16/22 giraffe) of the herd, and all giraffe had OA by 7 yr of age. Pedal osteitis was present in at lea

A Fracture in the Proximal Pastern Bone of a Free-Roaming Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis giraffa) Under Field Conditions.

Foot and hoof problems are one of the most common health concerns for giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis) held in captivity. However, very limited information is available on the foot pathology for free-roaming giraffes. A free-roaming giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis giraffa) situated within a small Free State game reserve presented with limping, and provided a unique opportunity to examine and treat the apparent foot injury. After being sedated and restrained, radiographs were taken in the field. A lateral fracture was diagnosed in the proximal pastern bone of the right front leg of the giraffe

Effects of altering diet carbohydrate profile and physical form on zoo-housed giraffe Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata.

Unlike wild giraffe that primarily consume low starch browse, the preference of zoo-housed giraffe for consuming supplemental feeds over forage could increase the risk of digestive disorders such as ruminal acidosis. Our objective was to evaluate the effects of modifying a supplemental feed's non-fibre carbohydrate profile and physical form on nutritional, behavioural, and blood measures of giraffe in a zoological setting. Six non-lactating, adult, female reticulated giraffes were used in a two-pen modified reversal study using two dietary treatments in seven 21-day periods with data collected

The use of magnetic resonance imaging to better define hoof pathology in the reticulated giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata).

A 22-yr-old bull giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata) with severely altered hoof conformation in both forelimbs was presented for necropsy following acute mortality. Due to multiple challenges that prevented safe immobilization, corrective hoof trimming procedures were never performed on this animal. To better define the extent of the damage of the soft tissue structures and bone within the hoof, a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system was used to obtain images of these structures. The MRI study found evidence of severe osteolysis, phalangeal fractures of both forelimbs, and tenosynov

Long-term suppression of fertility in female giraffe using the GnRH agonist deslorelin as a long-acting implant.

Zoological institutions provide an environment conducive to studying proximate mechanisms influencing reproduction that can provide guidance to both field and captive settings seeking to manage their stock. Both national parks and zoos have space limitations that sometimes require the use of reversible contraception in order to reduce reproductive rate or limit specific individuals from reproducing. We designed a study to test the efficacy of a long-lasting contraceptive in female giraffe by monitoring reproductive endocrinology and behavior. We implanted two animals with the GnRH agonist desl

ATTEMPTED SURGICAL CORRECTION OF A PERSISTENT RIGHT FOURTH AORTIC ARCH IN A JUVENILE ROTHSCHILD'S GIRAFFE (GIRAFFA CAMELOPARDALIS ROTHSCHILDI).

A 5-mo-old female Rothschild's giraffe ( Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi) presented for regurgitation. Esophagoscopy at 24 wk of age revealed a markedly dilated cranial esophagus with a tight stricture at the level of the heart base consistent with a vascular ring anomaly. Surgical exploration confirmed persistent right fourth aortic arch with ductus originating from left subclavian artery at its junction with the aorta and left subclavian artery. The patent ductus arteriosus was surgically ligated. The procedure was complicated by limited surgical access and vascular friability resulting i

The binucleate cell of okapi and giraffe placenta shows distinctive glycosylation compared with other ruminants: a lectin histochemical study.

The placenta of ruminants contains characteristic binucleate cells (BNC) with a highly conserved glycan structure which evolved early in Ruminant phylogenesis. Giraffe and Okapi placentae also contain these cells and it is not known whether they have a similar glycan array. We have used lectin histochemistry to examine the glycosylation of these cells in these species and compare them with bovine BNC which have a typical ruminant glycan composition. Two placentae, mid and near term, from Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) and two term placenta of Okapi (Okapia johnstoni) were embedded in resin a

Insufficient colostrum ingestion is a risk factor for polyarthritis and/or phlegmon in hand-reared reticulated giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata): 7 cases (2003-2012).

Seven reticulated giraffes were hand-reared at Nogeyama Zoological Gardens, because the dam had agalactia. Six of the 7 calves exhibited polyarthritis and/or phlegmon in the lower legs. However, the cause of the disorder was unclear. The present study reviewed the clinical records of the 7 giraffes, including the type and amount of colostrum ingested during the first 72 hr. The disorder involved the fetlocks and carpal and tarsal joints in 6 of the 7 calves within an average of 8 days of birth. The average amount of fed bovine or powdered colostrum was 0-2.4 l in the first 24 hr and 2.0-6.2 l

VALIDATION OF A NOVEL ENZYME-LINKED IMMUNOSORBENT ASSAY FOR DETECTING PREGNANCY-SPECIFIC PROTEIN B IN MASAI GIRAFFE (GIRAFFA CAMELOPARDALIS TIPPELSKIRCHI).

The Masai giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis tippelskirchi) is endangered in the wild, and successful reproduction in managed care is important to help maintain assurance populations of this highly charismatic subspecies. Detection of pregnancy in giraffes using hormonal monitoring requires multiple samples and cannot distinguish pregnancy from pseudopregnancy. A novel enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay that can detect pregnancy-specific protein B (PSPB) for pregnancy diagnosis with a single serum sample was developed from a reticulated giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata) placenta. Pathology and immunohistochemistry of papillomavirus-associated cutaneous lesions in Cape mountain zebra, giraffe, sable antelope and African buffalo in South Africa.

Skin lesions associated with papillomaviruses have been reported in many animal species and man. Bovine papillomavirus (BVP) affects mainly the epidermis, but also the dermis in several species including bovine, the best-known example being equine sarcoid, which is associated with BVP types 1 and 2. This publication describes and illustrates the macroscopic and histological appearance of BPV-associated papillomatous, fibropapillomatous or sarcoid-like lesions in Cape mountain zebra (Equus zebra zebra) from the Gariep Dam Nature Reserve, 2 giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis) from the Kruger Natio

Fatal Acute Thyroiditis in a Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) Associated with Clostridium perfringens Type A: A "Local Proliferation-Systemic Intoxication" Pathogenic Model.

This report presents the first case of fatal acute thyroiditis associated with Clostridium perfringens type A in a captive giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) and describes findings consistent with the proposed "local proliferation-systemic intoxication" pathogenic model. A 5-year-old female giraffe in Hebei Province, China, presented with diarrhea, emaciation, and sudden death. Necropsy revealed marked thyroid enlargement, intestinal mucosal hemorrhage and shedding, and pericardial effusion. C. perfringens type A was isolated from thyroid tissue, and molecular analysis detected the presence of t

MORBIDITY AND MORTALITY ASSOCIATED WITH 50 INDIVIDUAL PASTURE IMMOBILIZATIONS OF GIRAFFE (GIRAFFA CAMELOPARDALIS) OVER 18 YEARS (2004-2022) AT A SINGLE INSTITUTION.

Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) are considered high risk for anesthetic complications. Interestingly, few recent peer-reviewed studies have evaluated morbidity and mortality in immobilized giraffe under managed care. Given that giraffe may require anesthesia due to their large size and potential to cause harm, a more scientific evaluation of the risks associated with the various types of immobilization procedures is warranted. Pasture immobilizations are often considered particularly high risk due to lack of control over the animal's environment. Other perceived risks include interference by

Behaviour Classification on Giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis) Using Machine Learning Algorithms on Triaxial Acceleration Data of Two Commonly Used GPS Devices and Its Possible Application for Their Management and Conservation.

Averting today's loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services can be achieved through conservation efforts, especially of keystone species. Giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis) play an important role in sustaining Africa's ecosystems, but are 'vulnerable' according to the IUCN Red List since 2016. Monitoring an animal's behavior in the wild helps to develop and assess their conservation management. One mechanism for remote tracking of wildlife behavior is to attach accelerometers to animals to record their body movement. We tested two different commercially available high-resolution accelerometers

Identification of novel Babesia and Theileria species in South African giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis, Linnaeus, 1758) and roan antelope (Hippotragus equinus, Desmarest 1804).

Blood specimens were received from five cases in which young adult giraffe, from different geographic origins in South Africa, showed sudden onset of disease and subsequently died. Additional specimens from two translocated giraffe, as well as one specimen from a roan antelope, were also included in the study. Blood slides from some of these animals showed the presence of piroplasms. DNA was extracted; the V4 hypervariable region of the 18S rRNA gene amplified and analyzed using the Reverse Line Blot (RLB) hybridization assay. PCR products failed to hybridize with any of the Babesia or Theiler

Impact of two types of complete pelleted, wild ungulate feeds and two pelleted feed to hay ratios on the development of urolithogenic compounds in meat goats as a model for giraffes.

Urolith formation has been documented in giraffes and goats. As research in giraffes poses logistical challenges, 16 buck goats were used as a model. The impact of two commercially available, pelleted feeds used for giraffes, ADF-16 and Wild Herbivore (WH), as well as the impact of alfalfa hay and pellet proportions (20% hay:80% pellets, 80P or 80% hay:20% pellet, 20P) on the formation of urolithogenic precursors in goat urine was accomplished in a 2 × 2 factorial balance study. Complete diets contained 0.60, 0.32, 0.35 and 0.26% phosphorus (P) with calcium:P ratios of 1.60, 4.16, 3.06 and 5.2

Potential Impact of Construction Noise on Selected Zoo Animals.

In anticipation of a major construction project in an urban New Zealand zoo, a study was initiated to assess the response to construction noise of selected animal species (elephant, giraffe, emu and alligator) previously observed to be sensitive to this kind of noise. The overall aim was to detect any signs of aversive responses to this noise to enable keepers to recognize these and take any necessary mitigating actions during the construction period. The experimental approach involved the creation of acoustic maps of each focal animal enclosure, a series of 90-min video recordings of the anim

Large-scale, interpretable gene regulatory network inference through biologically informed matrix factorization.

Gene regulatory networks (GRNs) provide a mechanistic framework for understanding how transcription factors coordinate gene expression to establish cellular identity and phenotype. Methods that integrate gene expression with motif-derived regulatory priors and other sources of biological information have substantially advanced gene regulatory network inference by reconstructing condition-specific regulatory architecture. These approaches estimate the evidence supporting regulatory interactions and have proven remarkably successful in a wide range of biological applications. A complementary vie
