Formation of a toxic substance inducing gizzard erosion (GE) was examined by using mainly a casein-histidine mixture as a simple model of fish meal. When a casein-histidine mixture was heated at 135 degrees C for three or five hours or at 160 degrees C for one hour, it induced severe GE. Changes in pH of histidine solution seemed to have little effect on the production of the toxic substance. Addition of a heated mixture of 30 mg of histidine and 150 g of casein (per kg of diet) failed to induce GE. A mixture of 750 mg of histidine and 150 g of casein was enough to produce a maximal toxicity.

Gizzard erosion in broiler chickens was investigated at 18 slaughterhouses in Japan. The condition was observed in 13 of them, and adenoviral gizzard erosion (AGE) was diagnosed histologically, immunohistochemically and virologically in the eroded gizzards from nine of these 13. Ingested shotgun pellets were found in 13 of 56 hunter-killed wild waterfowl between October and December 1991 from two hunting grounds in Japan. Four of 33 other waterfowl found dead in lightly hunted areas between January 1991 and March 1992 were diagnosed as having lead poisoning. We propose that lead poisoning maybe a threat to waterfowl in Japan.

Chicken astrovirus (CAstV) is one of many viruses related to enteric diseases in poultry that are associated with Runting-Stunting Syndrome (RSS), which affects young chickens. Mycobacterial infections are an important cause of morbidity and mortality in birds and a considerable diagnostic challenge until the disease is advanced. In order to develop more clinically useful antemortem tests, a biological model was created that replicated naturally occurring disease.
