Occupational contact allergic dermatitis in dentistry.

INTRODUCTION: Dental professionals may be at increased risk of developing occupational allergic diseases specially to methacrylates that can permeate protective disposable gloves. CASE REPORT: We presented a case of occupational allergic contact dermatitis in a 28-year-old dental technician. The patient had complained of itching and cracking of fingers for 6 months. The dermatitis improved over weekends. Skin erythema and scaling were present with primarily involvement of the fingertips. Patch testing with dental series gave positive vesicular reaction to methyl methacrylate. Follow-up after

Management of latex reactions in the occupational setting.

1. The increased use of natural rubber latex barrier protection to prevent exposure to bloodborne pathogens has led to an increase in latex related health reactions, particularly associated with glove use. 2. The three types of reactions to latex in order of frequency include irritant contact dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, and immediate systemic/anaphylaxis reactions. 3. The management goal for all reactions is to avoid unnecessary restriction from the appropriate use of latex (gloves) which provides the best barrier protection, while protecting individual workers from exposure that

A novel glove box design decreases glove box surface contamination and glove waste.

BACKGROUND: Non-sterile, disposable medical gloves are essential for reducing the risk of cross-contamination in healthcare settings. However, glove boxes and unused gloves can become contaminated during the act of glove withdrawal, potentially increasing the risk of pathogen transmission. AIM: To compare glove box surface contamination and glove loss between a novel glove box, designed to better facilitate glove withdrawal, and a standard glove box. METHODS: In a non-blinded, non-randomized study at Medline Industries LP, 30 adult participants wore finger paint-coated gloves and withdrew gl

[Allergy and other skin reactions as a result of rubber gloves].

Protective latex surgical gloves and examination gloves may cause allergic contact dermatitis, mainly due to rubber chemicals used in the manufacturing process. Latex proteins in the gloves may cause contact urticaria and even anaphylactoid reactions. Eighty-eight dentists and other members of the dental team were tested for contact allergy to thiuram- and mercapto-derivatives, and for contact-urticaria to latex proteins. All but 5 persons used gloves at least periodically. Fifty-one of 87 of the persons who answered a questionnaire had or had had symptoms from the skin on the hands, but in on

Update on medical and surgical gloves.

Occupational dermatitis to personal protective equipment (PPE), particularly to gloves, mainly occurs in healthcare workers. They are all irritant and/or allergic contact dermatitis (eczema and contact urticaria). Prolonged glove wearing by healthcare workers favours skin irritation of the hands and wrists. It is very important to consider characteristics and materials of gloves used in the medical field. Rubber additives are the main allergens in gloves. Latex or natural rubber remains by far the most frequent cause for occupational contact urticaria from gloves. The problem of prevention of

Glove use among hairdressers: difficulties in the correct use of gloves among hairdressers and the effect of education.

BACKGROUND: Hand eczema is frequent among Danish hairdressers, and they are advised to use gloves as protection. However, studies indicate that a significant proportion use gloves inappropriately. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether hairdressers and apprentices use protective gloves in the correct way, and to determine whether a demonstration of correct use could cause an improvement. METHODS: Forty-three hairdressers and apprentices were asked to perform a hair wash while wearing gloves. The shampoo used was contaminated with an ultraviolet (UV) trace material. Two rounds of hair washing were

Effect of multiple alcohol-based hand rub applications on the tensile properties of thirteen brands of medical exam nitrile and latex gloves.

Current CDC guidance for the disinfection of gloved hands during the doffing of personal protective equipment (PPE) following the care of a patient with Ebola recommends for multiple applications of alcohol-based hand rub (ABHR) on medical exam gloves. To evaluate possible effects of ABHR applications on glove integrity, thirteen brands of nitrile and latex medical exam gloves from five manufacturers and two different ABHRs were included in this study. A pair of gloves were worn by a test operator and the outside surfaces of the gloves were separately treated with an ABHR for 1-6 applications.

Sustainable PPE: is it possible to protect the patient and the planet?

Healthcare systems are facing the dual challenge of maintaining high standards of infection prevention and control while also striving to reduce the environmental impact of health care. Personal protective equipment is one area of nursing where sustainable change can impact positively on both the patient and the planet, as glove over use is one of the biggest carbon hotspots in healthcare. This article explores studies that have implemented changes to gloves, aprons, isolation gowns, eye protection and masks successfully. Benefits have been far reaching and have impacted positively on staff sa

Evaluation of Glove Performance after Decontamination.

Studies of healthcare providers doffing personal protective equipment, especially gloves, indicate that self-contamination does occur. Although generally this is not hazardous, working with particularly pathogenic organisms, such as Ebola virus and Clostridium difficile, can present a serious health risk. Decontaminating medical gloves before removal can reduce self-contamination and mitigate the spread of these types of pathogens. Also, in cases of extreme shortage, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has specific recommendations for decontaminating gloves for extended use. R

Management of hairdressers sensitized to hair dyes or permanent wave solutions.

Paraphenylendiamine and glyceryl monothioglycolate are among the most common sensitizers in hairdressers. Ordinary vinyl gloves can prevent paraphenylenediamine sensitization, but presently available gloves are either not protective against glyceryl monothioglycolate sensitization or are too cumbersome to use. A new, lightweight Danish "4H" glove, which protects workers against epoxy resin and acrylic compounds, is being investigated for use in protecting against glyceryl monothioglycolate sensitization. Table II lists the principal features of the differential management of patients with para

[Double gloving in reducing the interoperative risk of blood borne pathogens].

The potential for blood contact with skin puts operating room personnel at increased risk of exposure to hepatitis or HIV virus. One of the most common areas of contamination with infectious biological material is the hands and fingers due to failure of glove protection. There are varying opinions regarding the frequency of glove failure during orthopaedic procedures and the necessity of wearing two gloves for added protection. The authors performed a trial of 94 procedures involving 10 surgeons from Orthopaedic Department of Pomeranian Medical University from Szczecin, Poland to answer these
