Fe is an essential component of haem in myoglobin and accounts for 70 % of haemoglobin. The balance of Fe, unlike that of other metals such as Na or Ca, is regulated solely by gastrointestinal absorption, which itself depends on the bioavailability of Fe in food, i.e. the chemical Fe species. Factors that maintain Fe homeostasis by modulating Fe transfer through the intestinal mucosa are found at the luminal, mucosal and systemic levels. Intramuscular administration of dibekacin or gentamicin to Fischer rats at doses of 10, 20 and 40 mg/kg for 11 days gave polyuria, enzymuria and cytauria. These changes were suppressed completely or partially by the simultaneous administration of glucarolactam sodium or potassium salt. The ameliorating results were supported by serum and histopathological analyses on day 12. A rise in BUN and serum creatinine levels was partially or completely suppressed and histopathological scores were improved by co-administration of glucarolactam salts.

Iron-deficiency anemia in pregnancy can have serious deleterious effects for both mother and fetus. Parenteral iron therapy in iron-deficiency anemia is recommended in patients where oral iron therapy is ineffective due to malabsorption states and non-compliance. Calcium and bone metabolism in 29 rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients were compared with those in 27 postmenopausal osteoporotic patients. Signs of vitamin D deficiency were found in 20 RA patients, including 12 who took recommended amounts of vitamin D in their diets and were exposed to sufficient sunlight, and in none of the osteoporotic patients. OBJECTIVES: This study compared the correction of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in pregnant people using ferric derisomaltose (FDM) to that with iron sucrose (IS).
METHODS: Pregnant participants between 13 and 35 weeks gestation were randomly assigned to receive intravenous FDM or IS for treatment of IDA. The primary outcome was normalization of hemoglobin. Change in hemoglobin and participant symptoms were also studied.
RESULTS: No significant difference was found in normalization of hemoglobin. Participants had improvement of hemoglobin and symptoms with both treatments.
